The Whisky Agency Cuba (15th Anniversary The Whisky Agency) 1963

Even self-described Cuba skeptics keep coming around on this one. At 60 years you'd expect a wood bomb, but tasters find dried fruit, dark chocolate and tobacco with the oak held in check and the alcohol nearly invisible. Several liken it to old sherry or a very old cognac. The recurring gripe: for the age, it reads a touch sweet and not the most complex.

The community says
  • Dried fruit, chocolate
  • Alcohol well hidden
  • Keep in mind: Reads a bit sweet

Thanks Raphaël for the sample. A deep and mysterious nose with lots of dark flavors. Lots of wood, vanilla, banana, and red fruits. Like the scent of very old cognac. An almost oily consistency in the glass. The entry on the palate is spectacular, also reminds me of a very old, very woody cognac. The alcohol is perfect, it supports the aromas without ever dominating, just like the wood. But a fresh side, like cherry pits, and fruity gives a nice balance to this palate. The finish is long, on bitter wood, caramel, with just the right amount of freshness and fruit to balance it all. A Cuban rum where everything is balanced, even if the complexity of the aromas is not quite there.

I'm not an unconditional Cuba fan. Nevertheless, I give their rum a chance every now and then. And this time they managed to convince me halfway. The mixture of sweet red fruit and tart leather/wood is quite appealing and harmonizes well. If it weren't for the strong sweetness, as if a light dosage had been added! This makes it lose something. The longer it lingers in the mouth and later in the finish, the sweetness decreases significantly, which makes it much more pleasant again. Overall, quite a good bottling and not too woody despite its age.

Not the oldest rum I have tried so far, but nearly. I tasted this rum together with RX18823 (WDC Cuba 1992). And I must say that on the nose there isn’t much difference, both are relatively weak (smooth) there, no alcohol noticeable at all. On the palate the difference is bigger: The 1963 is much woodier, which is no surprise, taking the age into regard. But also remarkably stronger in the sense of mouth filling, which is surprising, because it contains less alcohol (48,5%). While in the 1992 I can taste malt, the 1963 comes out with licorice and leather - it really reminds me of a very old Demerara rum! :flushed::yum: Conclusion: In the mouth they develop a slightly different taste and strength, but both are great rums imo - 88 points each. ¡Salud! :tumbler_glass::tumbler_glass: P. D.: Again I’m quite sure that both are from the Santiago distillery.

#4754 28.06.2024 Relaxing at home with this wondwrful rum. Nose Sweet, wood, light tobacco, balanced, plums, dried fruit, chocolate, faint caramel. Palate Naturally sweet, wood, light roasted, dried fruit, light caramel, light tobacco, light earthy, faint nutts, light herbs. Finish Long, wood, dried fruit, light chocolate, light caramel, light nutts. The empty glass has some nice banana, honey and berries. Draws really nice slow moving curtains in the glass. This is an amazing rum and I expected to be bombarded with wood, but that was not the fact. Very well balanced and a great profile with natural sweetness. Had to buy a bottle and several samples 😊

You can certainly tell that the rum has been aged in wooden barrels for a long time, but it's nowhere near 60 years. Perhaps the relatively pronounced sweetness masks its age somewhat. But at least it doesn't have a musty off-note like The Whisjy Jury bottling. Does not seem watery at 48.5%. Dried fruit, wood, tobacco, chocolate. The bottling is certainly one of the better ones in the Spanish style, but it still remains too one-dimensional for me.

So far, Cuba has never really convinced me. This bottling, however, is fun. With an impressive 60 years, it is of course, as expected, rather woody and spicy. Nevertheless, there are also some nice dark fruits. Compared to other countries/distilleries, Cubans are simply not particularly complex, and that doesn't change with this bottling.

On a spontaneous Cuba evening, the RX18823, RX17933, and RX20297 went head to head. For me, the bottling from The Whisky Agency is the winner. All are rather on the woody side and feel a bit one-dimensional. The WuDram is last for me, as it has an unpleasant acidity in taste.

Very round profile. Heavy sweetness of caramel, molasses, dark chocolate, vanilla sugar. In addition, some spicy-tart tones of allspice, green pepper and old wood. The profile is rounded off by beautiful dried fruit aromas, which I would primarily place in a tropical environment. Extremely pleasing profile, neither the long maturation nor the alcohol are negatively perceptible. A drinkable rum at a high level.

Nose: wood, tobacco, cinnamon, sweetness. Palate: very round, sweet, plum, tobacco, wood, alcohol, baking spices. Finish relatively short and somewhat alcoholic. Overall I expected more, a bit little flavor, little complexity, maybe too diluted. Maybe it was also somewhat sweetened. Somehow I don't really get along with the Cubans. Maybe not quite my preferred flavor profile.

Wow my oldest rum, 60 years old. Beautiful and intense nose with dried fruit and cocoa. Wood and leather notes. Well balanced and rich. Dried fruit, wood and tobacco on the palate. Delicious sweetness. Alcohol is barely noticeable, very well integrated. Tastes very light at first, but the long finish then becomes more and more intense. Very good Cuban rum. Very expensive, of course, so unfortunately it remains with the sample, but I'm happy to be able to try it.

Woooow! What a great Cuban rum! If the claim "no added sugar" is true, then this is probably the sweetest drinking rum I know. Really great aromas of vanilla and dried fruits as well as wood, dark chocolate, cherry, plum, raisin and caramel spread in the nose. Leather, nuts, brown sugar and tobacco additionally create a nice, balanced overall picture. Then on the palate the incredible sweetness accompanied by dried fruits, chocolate, vanilla, caramel, plum, wood and raisin. Added to this in refined balance are leather, burnt sugar, roasted notes, tobacco and spices. Everything is wrapped in this buttery sweetness. The long creamy finish offers a similar aroma profile as the palate and is characterized by cherry, unobtrusive barrel notes and a bit of cola. I am absolutely thrilled by this masterpiece of barrel aging! Thanks to @Rumurmel for this brilliant sample 😀

Today the second tasting and for me it deserves a 9. For its age, the wood is not overpowering. Dried fruits and some sweetness are in the foreground. All very harmonious. Nice long finish.

Today, Gunnar's two Cuban friends were allowed to prove themselves. You can see a clear difference between the two rums as soon as they are poured. This one is much oilier and darker. The smell is actually very similar. However, the taste of the old boy convinces me a little more. The consistency is creamy and oily. Despite the low alcohol content, it is full-bodied and powerful in taste. More wood but also a lot of dark fruit, which gives a nice taste. I like it very much. Thank you Gunnar for the great experience. :)

Wow. This is great. As old rum should be. Full of mature oloroso. Chocolate. Leather. This is crazy how tasty and evolving this is. But very pricy for what you get.

Actually, I don't particularly like Cuban rums. Actually!! This one is stunning and fantastic. At >60 years I primarily expected wood, but what I smelled and tasted blew me away. Dark chocolate, burnt sugar and of course wood. But as I said, not intrusive or dominant. Great!!! The alcohol is nicely integrated and pleasant too. That's the problem with samples, I'd love to have a bottle to enjoy. Fantastic rum!!!!

NOSE: Oil paints, strawberry compote, bruleed sugars, freshly sanded oak- opening up to antique shop, *old* old oak, church pew, toffee pie. PALATE: Thick, syrupy. Raisins, figs, molasses, prune syrup, bitter oak tannins, cinnamon, cola syrup, black cherry. Tons of dried fruits and some oxidized, sherry-like notes. FINISH: More black cherry, cola syrup, bitter oak, dark roasted hazelnuts, and lingering spices. OVERALL: Overall more whisky-esque, with its sherry-like medley of dried fruits and roasted nuts. But still with an unmistakable DNA of rum. This is a heavy rum, in a lot of ways. But it is layered, and complex. The finish goes on absolutely forever, coating the palate with rich dark fruit syrups and wafting sherry notes. SCORE: 86/100

The oldest rum I've ever tasted. Beautiful dark colour. I smell dried fruit, light wood, chocolate. Almost no alcohol. It's slightly sweet on the palate, smooth. I can smell drevite and fruity notes, roasted nuts. It makes a nice pattern on the side of the glass. I was very happy to taste this rum. It's an absolute blast.
