The Whisky Agency Cuba (15th Anniversary The Whisky Agency) 1963

Even self-described Cuba skeptics keep coming around on this one. At 60 years you'd expect a wood bomb, but tasters find dried fruit, dark chocolate and tobacco with the oak held in check and the alcohol nearly invisible. Several liken it to old sherry or a very old cognac. The recurring gripe: for the age, it reads a touch sweet and not the most complex.

The community says
  • Dried fruit, chocolate
  • Alcohol well hidden
  • But: Reads a bit sweet

I'm not an unconditional Cuba fan. Nevertheless, I give their rum a chance every now and then. And this time they managed to convince me halfway. The mixture of sweet red fruit and tart leather/wood is quite appealing and harmonizes well. If it weren't for the strong sweetness, as if a light dosage had been added! This makes it lose something. The longer it lingers in the mouth and later in the finish, the sweetness decreases significantly, which makes it much more pleasant again. Overall, quite a good bottling and not too woody despite its age.

#4754 28.06.2024 Relaxing at home with this wondwrful rum. Nose Sweet, wood, light tobacco, balanced, plums, dried fruit, chocolate, faint caramel. Palate Naturally sweet, wood, light roasted, dried fruit, light caramel, light tobacco, light earthy, faint nutts, light herbs. Finish Long, wood, dried fruit, light chocolate, light caramel, light nutts. The empty glass has some nice banana, honey and berries. Draws really nice slow moving curtains in the glass. This is an amazing rum and I expected to be bombarded with wood, but that was not the fact. Very well balanced and a great profile with natural sweetness. Had to buy a bottle and several samples 😊

Today, Gunnar's two Cuban friends were allowed to prove themselves. You can see a clear difference between the two rums as soon as they are poured. This one is much oilier and darker. The smell is actually very similar. However, the taste of the old boy convinces me a little more. The consistency is creamy and oily. Despite the low alcohol content, it is full-bodied and powerful in taste. More wood but also a lot of dark fruit, which gives a nice taste. I like it very much. Thank you Gunnar for the great experience. :)

Not the oldest rum I have tried so far, but nearly. I tasted this rum together with RX18823 (WDC Cuba 1992). And I must say that on the nose there isn’t much difference, both are relatively weak (smooth) there, no alcohol noticeable at all. On the palate the difference is bigger: The 1963 is much woodier, which is no surprise, taking the age into regard. But also remarkably stronger in the sense of mouth filling, which is surprising, because it contains less alcohol (48,5%). While in the 1992 I can taste malt, the 1963 comes out with licorice and leather - it really reminds me of a very old Demerara rum! :flushed::yum: Conclusion: In the mouth they develop a slightly different taste and strength, but both are great rums imo - 88 points each. ¡Salud! :tumbler_glass::tumbler_glass: P. D.: Again I’m quite sure that both are from the Santiago distillery.

Wow my oldest rum, 60 years old. Beautiful and intense nose with dried fruit and cocoa. Wood and leather notes. Well balanced and rich. Dried fruit, wood and tobacco on the palate. Delicious sweetness. Alcohol is barely noticeable, very well integrated. Tastes very light at first, but the long finish then becomes more and more intense. Very good Cuban rum. Very expensive, of course, so unfortunately it remains with the sample, but I'm happy to be able to try it.

Nose: wood, tobacco, cinnamon, sweetness. Palate: very round, sweet, plum, tobacco, wood, alcohol, baking spices. Relatively short finish. Overall, I expected more, a little less flavor, little complexity, perhaps too diluted. Perhaps it was also sweetened a little. Somehow I'm not really warming to the Cubans. Perhaps not quite my favorite flavor profile.

Cuba taught the world to drink rum light. This is the island that gave us the Daiquiri, the Mojito and Bacardi, and the smooth, column-distilled Spanish style that became the most popular rum on earth. Today its rum is entirely state-run and shut out of the United States, yet Havana Club still ranks among the Caribbean's biggest brands.
