Wu Dram Clan Hampden Jamaican Rum (Flickenschild) SCJB 2024
This one splits the room, and mostly not in its favor: people came expecting Hampden funk and got a quieter, wood-and-spice Jamaican instead. Nose is the nice part — yellow tropical fruit, pastries, vanilla, a little nail polish. On the palate the alcohol runs hot and slightly rough, with a bitter, metallic edge on the dry finish. Several tasters guessed a heavy Clarendon share.
- Fruity pastry nose
- Long dry finish
- 15-Year pot still

Aggregated from 34 community reviews.
Hot, low-funk Jamaican that underwhelms Most tasters landed on "good, but below expectations." Pleasant fruity-pastry nose, then hot, sharp-edged and a touch bitter on the palate — and almost no of the Hampden funk people wanted.

8,2:On the nose, the first touch we get are overripe tropical fruits with caramelized fermented pineapple, overriden with baking spices, strong cinnamon and pastries. We cannot forget nails polish. After airing a bit, there is cookie dough and toasted wood with dried fruits, becomes roasted after a while and well balanced. We notice some flowery touch then and ginger. In the end it is more medicinal, metallic, with leather note and a bit dry. 8,5:On the palate, the first attack are ripe, velvety tropical fruits with confectionery, like fruit cake or brioche then intense peppery spiciness that quickly goes away and baking spices come instead. After it gets a bit metallic, bitter and dry. The fruits become dried, everything goes towards more balance, the wood toasted and there are some yellow fruits and biscuits. 8,6:The finish is long with dried fruits, tropical fruits, pastries, maple, some spiciness, baking spices, toasted wood, very round, a bit dry...

Subtle scent, it must be some low ester product ala owh or lfch. Never mind, if you let the rum sit, you get a lovely Jamaican perfume. Flavour-wise it may be more towards the Clarendon profile, which I don't care for, but what bothers me is the blandness. I enjoyed Hampden 8 more.
Review by Mentalo

My expectations were high, but I was surprised by the alcohol content immediately after smelling it. I let the glass rest for 10 minutes and the sharpness disappeared. You can tell it's Jamaica (clarendon, perhaps?), the classic flavours are obvious. But what surprised me is the taste of green apple, which I didn't expect here. Overall, I'd say it probably needed a longer stay in the barrel to sharpen the edges of the alcohol.

Noticeable alcoholic spiciness on the nose and quite restrained for Jamaican origin. Yellow fruits. I suspect that the proportion of (young?) Clarendon is comparatively high. The taste seems to confirm this: there are few Hampden-typical aromas and I am very reminded of the various Clarendon bottlings from Rest & Be Tankful. On the palate, the alcohol is no longer so noticeable. The finish is long and dominated by a fruity sweetness (yellow fruits again), light salty notes and a dry mouthfeel. All in all, not bad, but I think there are more exciting blends out there.
Review by Dr.Django
Unfortunately unexpectedly alcoholic and light on the palate. The funky Jamaica aromas are somewhat restrained. It reminds me more of the Habitation Forsyths bottlings from Velier than of Hampden or Clarendon. Just a step down in quality. thanks @rumtata for the sample

I like it better on the nose than on the palate, where it comes across as somewhat unrounded and sharp-edged. It would be interesting to compare it directly with the S&C Traditional Jamaica Rum.
Review by Christian Rudt
Review by Alexander Rasch
Muss man mögen.

Review by F.L.O.

Review by Schnubbi

Somehow I can't do anything with this blend. While I still find the nose quite pleasant with delicate yellow fruits, vanilla and cookies, the rum totally loses me on the palate... there is nothing of Hampden or Jamaican funk. I only perceive spices and wood in the foreground. It also feels light. On the finish I taste an unpleasant bitter note... somehow the whole thing doesn't fit together for me. Too bad, I had expected much more
Review by crazyforgoodbooze
Unfortunately rather disappointing overall. Alcoholic, bitter, metallic and spicy, dry. Unfortunately, I can't find any of the otherwise typical spice and fruit aromas here, let alone any funk. For me, it tastes like another extra overproof Smith & Cross but is rather one-dimensional overall. Too bad.
