Epic Velier Caroni Tasting 2023: With the two 1983 Caronis, it is noticeable that the dirty notes are not particularly present, instead rather light, i.e. LTR-typical sweet notes come to the fore. For me, the (alleged) Full Proof at 55% is a little ahead of the 52% High Proof thanks to a little more complexity and more concise tar and gum notes. Overall, the profile is almost like an LTR & HTR blend.

A lovely nose with mechanical workshop (old insulation tar) at first but then a touch of custard and fruit, overripe banana, sweet pineapple. Dry herbs and old hemp rope are also present. The alcohol is perfectly integrated. The palate is acqueous, with a clear sense of dilution, nothing like the nose. Some aromas rise, then fall away fairly quickly. The finish is short, far too short for a Caroni. At the very end, in the empty glass, there's hardly anything left, just a little sweetness. Perhaps the sample is a little oxidized.

Of course they are rare, but some of these 80s caroni, as this 1983 is really just too less of everything to really ascend into the 90 point scale. Too mellow, too sweet. By no means is it bad but I really think this stands no chance against the 90s

The Trinidad distillery shut down around 2002 and not a drop has been made since, but its heavy, oily, almost diesel-like rum became a collector obsession, carried to the world by Velier.
