The Whisky Jury The Duo Chapter 2 2017
Sip it neat and the Hampden side leads: overripe pineapple, glue, esters, a herbal-eucalyptus edge, then honeyed sweetness from the South American base. At 50.7% the heat is mostly tamed. Several tasters call it an easy sipper that's still interesting, though a few find the two halves don't fully knit, and the finish can run short.

Edit: tried it again in MaiTai and CubaLibre until the bottlekill. There it convinced me more than pure, so it was allowed to take the hurdle to very good. Very good performance for the price as a mixer I bought it for the price, but I wasn't really convinced by it. After a long time in the glass, it developed an off note for me, which unfortunately I can't pinpoint exactly, but it still bothers me. I was also a little enthusiastic at first, but after tasting it several times, it simply ends up as a mixer.

a duo from jamaica. somehow it's dirty. typical funky jamaica notes are there, of course, but they are subtly present in my eyes/palate (gunnar please help). as much as i like "the whisky jury", the rum here is just seemingly randomly mixed.

21.07.2025 Retasting and it's still pretty good. -------------- #5083 Saturday 24.01.2025 - 26.01.2025 A nice weekend in my sisters summerhouse with old friends and colleagues tasting a lot of rums. I can only recommend like we did, no phones allowed and then only music in the background 😊 Colour Light in colour. Nose Fresh, faint wood, faint toasted, fruity, pineapple, light nutts, light citrus. Palate Light oily, fresh, fruity, overripe, light nutts, light plum, light marzipan, faint mint, light herbal. Finish Medium to long and warm, light oily, naturally sweet, light plum, faint strawberry, medium dry. Empty glass Light medicinal, faint plum, light pineapple, light herbal, dried fruit.

8,3:On the nose, it is very complex, estery, the first attack are really overripe, fermented tropical fruits with banana, pineapple, grass, medicinal side is very strong with metallic notes, glue, resin, eucalyptus. Airing brings us roundedness, some roasted side, toasted wood and baking spices with cinnamon and ginger, overripe fruits become dried now with plum marmelade and smoky, after a while marzipan is noticed and some minty, herbal side of this rum. With some resting, there is also orange peel. 8,6:On the palate, strong ripe, fermented gourmand tropical fruits hit us first, then salty side comes out, wanes, quickly overpowered with juicy strawberry that changes to caramelized dried fruits aspect with plum marmelade pastries and some smoke, it becomes a bit dry and astringent. The palate is round. It takes a while to notice weak pepper, medicinal, herbal notes with rosemary and almost no bitterness. 8,5:The finish is very long, fruity, with dried fruits, a bit dry and round... Nice🙂..

At first I was skeptical whether such a "blend" could work... After tasting it, I came to the clear conclusion YES. The nose is nice and fruity and funky with a few herbal notes. On the palate there's a bit more going on, with nice spicy notes added to the funky ester aroma ... Some mint and eucalyptus somehow fit together quite well. In the Mai Tai it scores a remarkable 3/5 .

I am thrilled. Especially for the price.

Very promising nose with intense fruits, solvents, grapes, cucumber. Falls off at the palate with rather syrupy sweetness, pastry’s and dairy. Alcohol feels like 35% very smooth. Crazy that this is only 2-6 years old… It’s a good drink, not really for me though. I need a bit more punch on the palate.
Review by Stuesch
Beautiful nose. Ester notes characterize the picture and the involvement from Jamaica can no longer be denied. A similar impression on the palate, although the rum convinces me even more here. I wouldn't have thought that not all the parts come from Jamaica. A super sipping rum and considering the price 😱 no brainer Thanks @bananajoe for the sample

Great rum, I really like it, despite the low ABV, but it doesn't seem watered down either. The nose and palate are predominantly tropical fruits and esters. Tastes very fermented and abstringent, pineapple is also recognizable. Delicious.
Review by Vincent D
Very esterized profile for this rum. Ripe fruit, pineapple, glue. No doubt about its provenance. On the palate, biting alcohol. Then esters, pepper, ripe fruit. Pleasant, but the alcohol is insufficiently integrated. The finish brings more gourmand and sweet notes. Pleasant.

Despite the low <>H content (20%), the Hampden sets the pace both on the nose and on the palate. Ester, eucalyptus, tropical fruits, marzipan, glue on the palate, plus a little plastic and fermentation. The young age of the blend is somewhat noticeable, but I still quite like it.

I am rating it in direct comparison with the first Duo. The nose is a bit shy, there is clearly some high Ester Hampden but you can smell that it is „on top“ of something else. Remember, it is a blend of 20% HD 2yr and 80% South America 6yr, whatever that may be. But let’s continue. The fruitiness and esters are lacking a bit of punch and you can smell the dilution with something less fruity, kind of dull. But still stere are some ripe fruits (pineapple and papaya), some (not so active) wood and dust. Some vegetal notes and a caramelised sweetness. The palate is way more inviting. It is sweet (sweeter than your usual Hampden) but it works quite well as the HD manages to punch through. There are more ripe fruits, some molasses and strawberries. In the finish there is some honey and a nice level of dryness. Overall it differs a lot from the first Duo or your typical HD but I like it a lot.

As soon as it is poured into the glass, esters and fruit immediately fill the nose. The Jamaica influence remains present on the palate at first and then turns into honey. Alcohol is already present and warms the finish with dry fruits. Really great for the price
Review by TheJackDrop
Frankly, I hesitated to buy it, but it's a real favorite: superb Jamaican, all about fruit, light esters without overdoing it, beautiful butter, a little olive and strawberry to finish it off. A little pricey perhaps, but top-notch. No regrets!
Review by Gromit21
Extremely well balanced with typical Jamaican influences. Bitter aftertaste.
Review by Schnubbii
The C<>H share is of course unmistakable both on the nose and on the palate. The South American also leaves traces on nose and palate. Unfortunately, both parts don't complement each other perfectly. The blend is not bad, but for me no more than the sum of its parts. For me, a nice thing to sip away, but nothing more.
Review by Banana Joe
The 20% high esters are very dominant on the nose, but I had expected that. After a while, a spicy note comes through. The typical fruity notes from Jamaica are also dominant on the palate, followed by a slightly peppery, spicy note. The 80% South America is most noticeable through a slightly sweet honey note. The finish is slightly astringent and spicy. For me, a very successful blend that is really enjoyable and also has a good PLV. I'll have to get myself another bottle.
Review by Julien Ries
On the nose, barely poured into the glass, it fills the room with its powerful, fruity esters. If the solvent side is present, very ripe exotic fruits invade the nostrils. There's pineapple and mango in full effect. Slight notes of gourmet spices complete the olfactory picture: a very light cinnamon, a little cardamom that strengthens in the second nose. There's also a whiff of English candy, a hint of nougat that awakens the taste buds. On the palate, the 50.7° is present but well integrated. There's a spicy edge, both acidic and spicy. Here again, a compote of ripe fruit develops, taking up the whole palate. On the second palate, a touch of licorice is also present, but less so than on the Hampden 8yo. Compared with the latter, this blend doesn't go for the disconcerting notes of olive and brine. Although it's dry, it has both floral and fruity greediness, with that pineapple compote, borderline rotten but in a rather noble sense. The finish is interminable, with a distinguished, powerful woodiness, a varnished noble oak, that I hadn't perceived until now.
Review by Martin Mihaly
Nice fresh young rum. Sweet, woody, ester and funky. On the nose nice, ester, vanilla, and lots of fresh wood. Red fruits, a bit of mango and raisins. Naturally gluey. On the palate quite strong, round, sharp with a low ABV but clearly peppery. Otherwise quite good, fruity-woody taste. Oily texture. Ester, vanilla and dried fruits. A bit bitter. The finish is not very long but very warm, woody and fruity. A good drink for the evening.
Review by FischeJ
A bit "funky", a bit herbal, a bit woody. Solid in a Mai Tai. Can be done, but there are cheaper, better mixers and for pure enjoyment I'd prefer many others.
Review by PRV
The aroma is of course funk and at the very beginning there is a lot of it. After a little breathing, overripe tropical fruits appear, probably even some tropical mash, sour olives, herbal notes, vanilla and a bit of mescal smoke. The taste is more interesting, it is more restrained and oily. Sweet and sour mango, green olives, lime and salt. The aftertaste breaks down quite quickly, but we manage to note an oily lime syrup and quiet funk. The aroma is dominated by HD, but in the taste there is a balance of spirits. Very pleasant strength and oiliness. Good.

A perfect introduction to Jamaican rums. The exuberance and esters are brought to the fore, but as if wrapped in a layer that makes them more conscensual. Superb value for money.
Review by Stijn Zino
Nice Hampden nose, but very soft in the mouth. Not enough expression. Almost no finish. Still enjoyable easy drinking rum.
Review by Rum man
Nice balance between the Spanish style rum and the Hampden. Easy sipper that is not too complicated yet exciting enough.
Review by Jacques etdom
On the nose, hampden clearly dominates, with overripe tropical fruit and esters. The South American brings spice and sweetness. On the palate, still very ripe fruit, glue, a little eucalyptus, accompanied by a gourmand note and a few spices that round things out. The finish is unfortunately short, too short for my taste. This is really its weak point, otherwise, given the price, a very good blend.

Vintage 2017. With 8.4 out of 10, it's a very good bottle, though not the top of my list.

Read full review ›I must admit, reading the description of this as a blend of South American Rum and Hampden I was apprehensive. But this is just really damn good. Tons of fruit, buttery popcorn, lots of spices. Its just a classic tasting rum with enough of that high ester funk to make it a little more interesting. This is one of those rums that rides that line of want to drink all the time casually but also to sit there and dissect it.
