Derr Wagemut Maduro is a sweet entry-level rum for those with a sweet tooth. Wonderfully harmonious, nicely mild, sweet and accessible. A bit too expensive for my taste but still very good.

Last of the three "Aficionado" I tried and I have to say: no, Niko, it doesn't taste good! Nose: full volume, full-bodied, lots of old brandy. Plus various sweet, dried fruits, mainly prunes and raisins, plus dried dates and apricots. Underneath everything is a heavy sweetness of maple and treacle. Not unpleasant overall. 7,2 Palate: and again just sugar. Insanely sweet with prunes and dried, sticky dates. That's it, neither the Trinidad rum nor the walnut barrel get a chance. Only for sweet rum drinkers and Kröger fans. 2,0

A very good drop where you can taste both the long years in Trinidad and the walnut finish. A bit of coffee and some tobacco are also present with lots of raisin and spice. I like it a lot and it's my number 2 among the three rums of the new Wagemut line.

The bigger, more intense brother of the PX Cask. Fruity, a bit sweeter, milder, rounder. A very, very awesome dessert rum / spirit drink, quite expensive (the most expensive spirit I've treated myself to so far) but ultimately worth it. For my current neat taste, it already comes pretty close to perfection. Drinks: - Neat: 5/5 - Rum Old Fashioned: 3.5/5 (a bit too much) - Rum Punch: 3/5

A very fruity, slightly sweet rum with dark fruit. No exaggerated sweetness, pleasant in taste, the finish is medium length, I would say. The dark fruity, slightly woody flavor remains. A very nice fruity, rounded, pleasant rum.

In itself a balanced, rounded rum. The wood and fruit notes complement each other perfectly. The alcohol is not too dominant, the finish could be a bit longer. The consistency is oily thick, which I personally always like very much.

The classic recipe continued from the bold PX-cask. Bursting with beautiful sherry aromas, also thanks to higher %. But it's also very sweet, almost syrupy, and the rum here just takes second place.

The first smell reminds me of opening a leather school satchel from my elementary school days. Deep and pleasant thoughts of the first school years. Then raisin, light tobacco notes, and walnut join in. When drinking, a light and sparkling alcohol smell appears but disappears immediately as a cozy warmth spreads in the mouth. Long-lasting finish without sharpness. A pleasant companion. The 120€ might be appropriate for the rum's age but seems high compared to other Wagemut bottlings.

Phew, what can I say. Once again a great product from Wagemut. It's not for beginners, more for advanced drinkers who like it sweeter. It totally gets me and is one of my favorites at home. Even though this rum was actually meant to be enjoyed with a cigar, as a non-smoker I'm also totally thrilled. For me personally, a very good mouthfeel, the more you drink :)

Had the chance to try this good drop during my visit to Pueblo del Ron in Nuremberg and was thrilled! Exciting aroma profile and very spicy. Definitely not a run-of-the-mill mainstream product, but that's exactly what I like about it! The flavors and alcohol are very well integrated, so the rum feels rather smooth but still not boring.

From the Afficionado Collection, for me the best, just ahead of the Colorado. Thick and dark it sits in the glass. The smell of sherry, dark fruits, then light wood and nut tones. It is thick and spreads a great soft feeling in the mouth. Tastes of sherry and nuts, some wood and tobacco join in. The slightly higher alcohol content of 47.6% suits it well.

The Maduro is more for people who value sweet rums and this one has it all, a 20-year-old Trinidad rum with lots of sherry with walnut and dark fruits. The alcohol is very well integrated and the finish is also very long-lasting. So I love it ❤️

Delicious rum, very much on the sweeter side. The sherry and walnut casks have a big influence. It has a mature flavor and notes of dried fruit, oak, and walnuts. I wouldn't recommend it if you don't enjoy sweet rums.

Hanse Spirit Hamburg February 2026. And the Maduro afterwards, but unfortunately I also find it overpriced. Otherwise quite tasty, very roasty and spicy. Sherry also clearly recognizable and still slightly sweetish.

From the rum world, for me currently the best I've ever enjoyed. Although it was only two tasting bottles, they convinced me that this rum definitely belongs in my collection or bar. What should also be mentioned is that the rum pairs perfectly with a cigar with good aroma, even more tobacco and even more chocolate and honeycomb, just a very beautiful successful thing and for €120 a bit expensive for me at the moment but not too expensive for this product. Nicolas Köger and his team have achieved something that many lovers can afford rather than a €300 to €500 thing. In short, if you like cigars, you might also like this Maduro, you really have to be careful not to get addicted. Many thanks for this thing!

I'm at a loss for words. Definitely my favorite rum at the moment. Even though it's a bit sweet. But with a nice cigar, it's a dream. I can only recommend everyone to at least try it once.

The viscous consistency alone makes you notice an extreme amount of sugar on the palate. Blindly, I would probably have guessed it was a liqueur. On the other hand, the percentages are well integrated. The taste is very smooth, pleasant, very sweet, a little wood, tobacco, plum, not really complex, short finish. Even though I'm not a smoker, I can imagine it going very well with a cigar.

Wow what a full load of sweetness and sherry. Very viscous, almost like a liqueur. I would have liked a little more rum and less sherry. Despite the strong sweetness, the walnut barrel comes through at the end. Unfortunately a little too short. For 120 euros, I would have hoped for a little more complexity and less sweetness. However, my wife likes it very much :)

Retasting on 03.09.26: Included as a sample with the Origin bottling: One-dimensional sweet sticky liqueur. You can't really detect any rum flavor. Clearly worse than I remembered. Goes down the drain. Mostly sweet and then the relatively familiar combination of dark fruits and wood. Pleasant nutty taste. But this candidate isn't really convincing. Especially the price is 30-40€ too high. What a pity

Positive surprise here after I'm not the biggest fan of the 2021 Wagemut edition with PX sherry blend. But here a new flavor dimension reveals itself... Walnut wood is definitely recognizable and brings nice bitter-spicy-nutty aromas, the Palo Corrado finish a slight acidity and fruitiness, the PX sherry for blending the necessary sweetness and viscosity, and everything underlined by this incredibly awesome aroma power of coffee, walnut, raisin, and sweet Virginia tobacco. Very complex and anything but boring and not too sweet. Very successful experiment! Hats off! I'm not a cigar smoker but can totally imagine it with one! With a bit less sugar, it would have almost gotten an 8+ rating but unfortunately, it stays quite intense...

Tasting report beginner!: Wagemut Maduro (Trinidad) Spirit: Wagemut Maduro (Trinidad molasses) Barrel aging: Walnut & Sherry casks Alcohol strength: 47.6% vol. Glass: Stölzle nosing glass Amount & time: 2 cl, consciously savored over about 1 hour The progression & aroma development After an appropriate resting phase in the glass, this rum unfolds an impressive, almost historic depth: The entry: At first, the strong alcohol strength is noticeable but quickly dissipates, revealing a mature, almost antique character ('like something old'). The core notes (constantly changing): Smoke & leather: Over time, distinctive smoky notes alternate with the impression of noble, old leather. Fruit & depth: Accompanied by intense, heavy aromas of very old dried fruits. The mouthfeel: The rum presents itself as an extremely deep, natural and 'sweet dark dream,' which achieves massive density through the intense influence of old wood and clearly surpasses the 'little brother' in terms of sweetness and complexity. The dynamics: Particularly fascinating was the liveliness in the glass – after the second sip smoke dominates, the next turns into fine leather. Conclusion & decision The Maduro proved over an extensive test lasting a full hour that it is an absolute exceptional drop. The combination of the heavy Trinidad base and the walnut-sherry cask perfectly hits the desired profile.

[German Rum Festival 2026] The Wagemut Maduro is a dark, lush board: forest berry jam, raisins, and strong sherry meet walnut, tobacco, and spicy wood. Thick, warm, and extremely sweet, but the 47.6% gives it enough strength as a counterpoint. I especially like the unusual walnut note – it gives character to the massive PX sweetness. Not a delicate rum, but an opulent digestif where less is definitely more. This will probably divide opinions – and that’s exactly what I find exciting. Those looking for dry, unadulterated rum will probably not appreciate the massive sherry sweetness. As a “dessert in a glass,” I find the combination of jam, raisin, walnut, and tobacco quite appealing.

My first rum from the Aficionado collection. You can taste the walnut cask. Otherwise rather on the sweet side without being too sweet. Also packs a punch, overall I have to say the experiment is quite successful. Surely suitable for cigars, but I'm a non-smoker.

Smell opening Trinidad yes, but way too much sweetness and acidity, probably due to extreme cask influence. This continues even more in the taste, extreme sweetness and already a bit syrupy consistency. Finish only honey and acidity.

A rum from Trinidad!? The PX-Cask sweetness just overpowers everything here. The flavor profile is basically complex with sherry, walnut, dried fruits, coffee, chocolate and so on, but in the end more sugar syrup than rum.

The next Wagemut 2024. Here too, the almost exaggerated sweetness dominates. A real ladykiller and sweet faction rum. Actually a pity, because TDL with walnut is really awesome and noticeable. Unfortunately gone again after 10 seconds because of the sweetness. The stuff would interest me a lot with much less sherry (or none at all).... but no wonder it's so sweet, the crowd was screaming after the 2021.... Pity - could have been more.

For me still the best Wagemut. I find all of them too sweet and the sherry influence too dominant. Here the walnut adds more depth. Jammy, gentle, alcohol well integrated. For me more something to enjoy as a dessert. It has something, but at over 120 euros rather not.

Read full review ›The Maduro is powerfully sweet, but also has an alcoholic punch, so it is not an absolute lightweight. This suits the idea of pairing it with a cigar. After all, you need something that can counter the cigar, but also harmonizes well with it - the strong sweetness and dominant raisin flavours help here.
