Apricot lands first here, and it lands hard — a Jamaican high-ester rum macerated with apricot in chestnut casks, so you get glue, brioche and tropical fruit on the nose, then a sweet, syrupy, almost liqueur-like palate. Several tasters loved the fruit bomb; just as many found it too sweet and oddly sour, like an apricot-vinegar blend. The 42.8% ABV sits well.

The second of the three daring tries with the reused barrels, here the chestnut barrel and not with Barbados but Jamaica rum. Nose: yes, unmistakably Jamaica, with ester, lemon, banana and pineapple with a sauce of pineapple-marzipan and honey. Also a bit of vinegar and brioche. All in all pleasant. 7.2 Palate: unpleasantly artificially sweet and very sour, what happened there? Initially tastes only like sour lemon syrup with lots of sugar syrup. With a lot of goodwill, banana and pineapple come through behind that. Unfortunately, I have to say: very bad and not worth the way too high price. 2.0

Bottle Market Bremen October 2024. This Wagemut is not for me, personally way too fruity (tropical fruits). On the nose also way too fruity for me. A bit of vinegar can also be detected. Whatever, the main thing is I tried it ;-)

Nach der eher enttäuschenden Verkostung des Maduro nochmal den Conneticut Shade eingeschenkt und endlich die Bewertung geschrieben. An diesem Spirit Drink scheiden sich die Geister. Entweder man findet die ungewöhnliche Frucht+Säure geil oder man hasst es. Ich finde es spannend und würde mir am Liebsten eine Version ohne Dosage wünschen. In der Nase erfrischend und esterhaltig, für das Alter erstaunlich frisch. Wagemut kommuniziert aber auch, dass junger Jamaica-Rum mit verblendet wurde. Ich vermute keinen Hampden, sondern alten WP, verblendet mit (wenn überhaupt) kurz gelagertem High Ester. Dazu gesellt sich trockene, aber auch frische Marille/Aprikose und generell europäisches Steinobst. Am Gaumen passiert dann richtig viel gleichzeitig. Funk + saure Aprikose + Zucker, unterlegt durch einen lange gereifte Jamaica-Qualität beanspruchen den ganzen Mund und Verlangen nach Aufmerksamkeit. Trotz nur 42,8% hohe Geschmacksdichte, wenn auch durch den Zucker verstärkt. Keine Spirituose für jeden Tag, aber hin und wieder genau das Richtige. Der Abgang könnte länger sein. Probiert zuletzt in München (09/26)

Nice fruity ester notes on the nose, could be a WPE. On the palate then again viscous, sweet, liqueur-like consistency, extremely round, thanks to the high esters still very fruity taste, especially peach and apricot, but of course very smooth due to the sugar. Medium-long finish. Certainly a good rum for beginners.

I have no access to this rum. What is this supposed to represent? Maybe it works with a (bad?) cigar? Lots of acidity and notes of a fusel apricot liqueur. I shuddered.

Super fruchtig mit viel Steinobst, v. a. Aprikose und Pfirsich, viel Säure, leicht erdig und würzig, dezente Ester-Note, deutliche Süße - die durch die Säure gut ausbalanciert wird. Insgesamt sehr eigenständig und stimmig.

Again very disappointing here. The nose still promises a strong, tasty Hampden with lots of esters. Taste-wise, quite an irritating acidity... Looked it up: it was macerated with chestnut cask finish and apricots. Tastes to me like a high ester Jamaica rum blended with apricot vinegar. I don't notice the chestnut cask finish here at all and generally don't understand why fruits have to be mixed into the rum... Shame.

For me, this is nothing. I actually love High Ester Jamaica Rum, but this one comes with too much acidity and too many fermented fruits. It smells super fruity like Jamaica, but disappoints in taste. However, I had it without a cigar. Since it is meant to be paired with a cigar, maybe I have to give it another chance sometime. But overall very unbalanced.

From the Afficionado Collection, for me personally the weakest. The other two made it into my collection, unfortunately not this one. The smell and taste is a mix of apricot, fruit notes and some vinegar. Too sweet and too sour. The other two are great!

Probably the perfect beginner Jamaican... but not at this price. Might also be due to the cask, which is quite interesting. Taste-wise I find the intense fruit bomb very pleasant. The ester does its job. But unfortunately also very sweet, so the quite tasty flavor disappears immediately. As said... very good for beginners and the sweeter crowd, for me clearly too sweet. Alcohol is perfectly integrated.

Very intensely fruity but with a scratching acidity that you don't expect at first. For that, a dense mouthfeel and distinct fruit sweetness that sometimes turns smoky.

Der schwächste der Aficionado Kollektion. Es stimmt alles, was draufsteht, Aprikose! Ein bisschen Ester. Insgesamt süßlich. Ob er wirklich zur Zigarre passt, kann ich nicht sagen, weil ich keine Zigarren mag. Kann mir auch nicht vorstellen, in welchem Cocktail er gut schmecken sollte. Für Leute, die auf süßliche Spirituosen mit Fruchtgeschmack stehen, ist der sicher lecker.

A rum blend from Jamaica, aged up to 19 years. Then finished with a hint of apricot in chestnut casks in northern Germany. The 42.8% alcohol is, as always with Wagemut, very well embedded. A rum designed for cigar smokers? If you prefer apricot over raisin in the foreground, you are right here. The fruit is so strongly in the foreground that you can already speak of a small explosion on the palate. A non-dominant woody taste in the background rounds off the extreme taste experience (funky) quite well. Production has now been discontinued. This rum comes from the Aficionado Collection by Wagemut, 3 rums for cigar smokers. Conclusion: It's not my thing. Too sweet (although I really like sweetness in rum) and the fruit (like in an intense liqueur) is powerfully in the foreground. I wouldn't buy a second bottle here. My wife, on the other hand, finds it great. So conclusion 2: Drink something else and save this rum for a charming companion :-).

Wagemut Connecticut Shade (Chestnut Cask Finish) * Wertung: 5,5 / 10 * Fokus: Solider, experimenteller Rum mit Abzügen beim Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis. Tasting-Notizen: * Nase: Schöne, fruchtige Jamaica-DNA, die direkt durchkommt, begleitet von frischen Zitrusnoten. * Gaumen: Eröffnet mit einer deutlichen Süße, gefolgt von typischen, vergorenen Fruchtnoten wie reifer Banane. Das Kastanienfass steuert im Verlauf eine dezente, milde Nussigkeit bei. * Abgang & Mundgefühl: Der Alkohol ist sehr sauber und gut eingebunden, der Abgang ist mittelschlang. Im direkten Vergleich zu einem puren Jamaica-Rum fehlt ihm allerdings die kompromisslose Wucht und die heftige Ester-Power – er ist im Charakter deutlich zahmer. Fazit: Kein langweiliger Einheitsbrei, sondern definitiv ein interessanter Versuch, der sich durch das Kastanienfass und die milde Süße vom Standard abhebt. Wer es etwas süßer und zugänglicher mag, kann hier durchaus mal einen Blick riskieren. Für meinen Geschmack fehlt ihm allerdings der echte Wow-Faktor, und für das, was er am Ende bietet, ist er schlicht zu teuer. Ein solider, aber kein herausragender Tropfen.
