Not the roaring ester bomb Jamaica trained you to expect — this Clarendon plays it gentle. Fresh pineapple and green apple lead, with soft esters, light herbs and a faint medicinal note under quiet oak. Several tasters call it a good gateway into Jamaican terroir. Others find it thin for 56.6% and a touch astringent, with plenty of varnish and a short finish.

#4749 22.06.2024 Nice tasting afternoon and evening with Hannes at the shop in Odense. Nose Light wood, fruity, pineapple, light herbs, faint medicinal, funk. Palate Light oily, light wood, balanced, light earthy, light herbs, pineapple, fruity, warm, light caramel. Finish Long and warm, light wood, faint mint, light leather, light herbs, light iodine.

A surprisingly funky nose with gentle esters that transport us straight to Jamaica, but without the spicy, heavy power of the Hampdens. Here, it's all about delicacy, with notes of fresh pineapple and tart green apple. It's all about the fruit, and it's very greedy. On the palate, it's still delicious, but without the liveliness of esters. This rum is ideal for discovering the special terroir of Jamaican rums, without offending the most sensitive palates. The alcohol is very well integrated. There's a profusion of exotic fruits: pineapple, papaya, passion fruit and a touch of mango. Mild spices like cinnamon and a little clove, which gives it a medicinal edge, soften the palate. The finish is medium-light, with a very light woodiness and a little fruitiness.

👃 Nice Jamaican esters accompanying juicy and sweet pineapple as desired. In the background, soft herbal notes (mint, thyme, pine needle) and medicinal ones (solvent, hydroalcoholic gel). Light smell of salted sweet butter, light wood. 😋 The funk returns with ripe pineapple, light tropical fruits (mango, passion fruit, papaya), the herbal and medicinal side (more on nail polish). Light caramel, wood and ester warmth. ⛳ Medium length, oscillating between astringency and slight bitterness. A bit of lemon dish soap, mild spices and light funk on tropical fruits. A bit of mint, herbs and salinity.

Tasted Clarendon's again after some time. The RX17964 and RX20907 were tasted in parallel. The Rhum Attitude is a little stronger in contrast to the V&M bottling, which is a little too thin in my opinion. That's why the RX17964 is my winner.

🔥 Clarendon 2010 – 56.6% 13 years of aging (including 8 under the tropics), barrel 432920, 334 bottles. 👉 Discreet nose, sweet/salty butter, light woodiness. 👉 Palate very marked by varnish, few fruits, lots of astringency and bitterness. 👉 A little menthol touch in the finish for consolation… ❌ Clearly not my thing, and very far from the pleasure offered by the Habitation Velier EMB 9 years (62%) of the same vintage.
