Rumclub Private Selection Jamaica Rum Red Barrel 2024
The red wine cask is the twist here: a Hampden pot-still Jamaican that trades the usual "nail salon" solvent blast for grape, red-fruit and light tannins. Expect overripe pineapple, banana and papaya with roasted young wood and a dry, slightly bitter finish. Several tasters call it a friendly bridge into high-ester rum, though a few find the wine note too loud and the body thin.

How does Rumclub Private Selection Jamaica Rum Red Barrel 2024 taste?
Summarized by AI from community reviews.
Fruity Hampden softened by red-wine cask Well-liked as an easy entry into Hampden funk, with a distinctive red-wine grape edge. The catch: some find it thin and slightly hot, and the wine note divides people.

In my view, this rum is brilliant because it bridges the gap between funky high-ester rums and no-ester rums. The balance between fruity notes and the notes from the red wine cask aging is very well done. This rum is free from petrol notes or, as Robyn Smith would say, "Nail Salon." If you're looking for a funk bomb, you'll be disappointed here. But if you want a more approachable integration of the high-ester notes, you'll love this rum.

High Ester Worthy Park meets red wine barrel. Great fun, especially the price-performance ratio!

As expected, not really a highlight. My prejudices have been confirmed. The finish is absolutely not successful for me. The wine note comes through too strongly for me. Overall, it also seems far too thin and watery. Not my cup of tea at all. The only positive thing here is the price.
Review by Thunderbird
The fact that this rum was finished in red wine is obvious! The color cast is too clearly visible. This almost suggests a wet finish. On the nose, the influence of the finish is just as noticeable (red wine/kumquat) and I also detect some caramel. It spreads thinly and lightly on the palate. Initially, this grape/kumquat note again, which then gives way to a nutty caramel/cream toffee note. Alcohol is well integrated. The finish is on the herbal, bitter side. This bottling is not for me, but should find its friends

The nose suggests nothing. A gift! For me, it's more about the rest... The palate continues with a light fruity sharpness that I don't like very much. The alcohol keeps coming through aggressively and negatively during the tasting. I still have 2 cl left and, given the other reviews, I'm confident that I've just had a bad day =P Thanks for the sample @Alex.K

Pub Alte Post Witten February 2025. This is one of the worse rum clubs. The nose is exclusively fruity, especially citrus fruits and pineapple and some red wine. On the palate then tropical fruits like pineapple, also some lime.
Review by Eugene227
Fruity Jamaican rum with controlled Hampden funk and a distinctive red wine influence. Tropical fruits, red grapes, some wood and light tannins meet a dry, slightly bitter finish.
Review by LukaŽiga
8,5:On the nose, the first impression we get are overripe, fermented tropical fruits with banana, papaya, guava, a bit sweet and grassy, underpinned with roasted wood, citruses. When aired a bit, caramelized dried fruits arise, molasses, it becomes more vegetal, herbal, as there is some anise, tobacco. It is minimally spicy, there are red fruits out of red wine finish. Later leathery, musty and waxy. Nicely balanced. 8,5:On the palate, the attack is fruity and warm, tasty with fermented, overripe tropical fruits as papaya, guava, there is some lime, as the fruits melt into delicious cherry compote with cloves, rhubarb. The wood is young and roasted, caramelized. Aeration brings out even more red fruits, that become candied, molasses are thick and syrupy, musty notes crawl in after well rested. 8,4:The finish is sweet and long, very tasty, as fruits are very ripe, the fruit compote with cloves is still delicious, the wood is dry, molasses thick, later some tannins arise, as the rum is also a bit musty... Delicious...

Great release. The nose is wonderfully round, the Hampden profile comes through wonderfully - overall, the olfactory experience almost reminds me of a fresh high-ester daiquiri thanks to the citrus fruits. It is precisely this triad of fully ripe pineapple notes, fresh lime and a little sugar that make up the overall nasal package. There are no major surprises on the palate - the aroma spectrum is flanked by subtle woody influences, and the reduced drinking strength is also somewhat noticeable; the brute force of higher-proof high-ester bottlings is of course not to be found here. An appealing release with a convincing PLV.

A rum tasted at the GRF in 2025. RumClub Masterclass. Esters, then overripe tropical fruits with a slight fermented note. The entry on the palate is soft, diluted, then the aromas rise with quite a strong bitterness. The finish is short, except the bitterness which rises again with a fermented side. The red wine note (of average quality) is clearly felt on the finish. A rum searching for balance.

Tasted at The Village fair 2026. A nice Jamaican that comes with a whole basket of fruits. Also on the palate many ripe fruits, light young wood with pleasant funk and glue. My first real step into Jamaica.

Heavy vanilla notes. Almost artificial.
Review by crazyforgoodbooze
Jamaica rum grape nut in liquid form, just not full on the 12 but rather relaxed. Light esters, glue, tannins from the red wine finish, nutty and fruity notes like bitter roasted hazelnuts and red grapes. Round experiment and easy to drink. Overall, the alcohol could be better integrated, but the finish is relatively sharp despite only 48%

Trade fair evaluation 13th GRF.

Nice entry-level Jamaican from Rum Depot! A good load of esters, which dominate especially on the nose and carry the Jamaican DNA. On the palate, these are somewhat tamed by the red wine finish, with a sour impression prevailing that definitely reminds me of grapes and wine. Nice blend from Jamaica!

Tasting at the 14th GRF 2025: Rounded Hampden release with fresh high-ester nose: pineapple, lime, sugar. On the palate subtly woody, a bit gentler due to the drinking strength. For the price-performance ratio fitting and successful.

A great rum at a super price. Quite funky with almost 1000 esters. I would love to have this in cask strength.
Review by Pavel Ungr, RumRock
I rate it 7.4 out of 10, a solid rum that doesn't disappoint.

... Hampden, the legendary Jamaican distillery that produces rum as well as alcohol for perfume. In all the rums from this distillery you will taste wild esters, after which your whole organism will soak up the smell of golden tropical fruits - mango, papaya, pineapple, peach. One of the "must try before you die" rums

A very good introduction to barrel aging. Here, the Zweigelt red wine barrel shows what it can do. The alcohol isn't 100% integrated, but since it comes at cask strength, it's okay. A very good rum that convinced me. Good ester hints and even though quite a young rum is blended, it tastes good. Red wine dominates both the nose and the palate. But also a typical Jamaican. Well combined.
Review by Stefan Wegner
Ester notes that already overwhelm beginners and are just right for advanced drinkers. Light vanilla scent with tropical fruit, everything quite nice but it lacks complexity or outstanding notes for a higher rating. Still, a great rum that you can enjoy.
Review by Martin82
Unusual for me as a beginner, but definitely not bad…
Review by AlPhilipo
A really great daily sipper. Awesome fruity funk without harsh glue notes. Red wine isn't too dominant in the rum. It could be a bit fuller-bodied. It feels a bit light but still very tasty

Basically my thing! I need to try it again!

Had read and heard a lot about this rum. Finally bought it. Well, actually besides Jamaica, the grape is also very present! Pleasant aroma in combination. The palate is bold and aromatic but a bit thin. The finish is short. It lacks some volume. But overall a good rum. Since I like the grape, 7.7 points. But not very spectacular.
Review by Carlitooo
Absolute price-performance cracker! Of course it has a hard time against the RumClub Single Casks from Jamaica, but for 50€ it's incredibly strong!
Review by R Wehner
Nose delicious and mild Jamaican funk; tongue similar, balanced, mild, the sweetness from the red wine barrel influence quite fitting, very tasty!
Review by Balu
Fresh Jamaican rum with a light ester note. The red wine cask gives the rum a lovely grape note with not too strong tannins.
