Thompson Bros. Dominican Rum 2013
People mostly land on "decent for a Dominican" here, with a few who don't usually love the style admitting this one won over them. Dates, cocoa nibs and nougat on the nose — one taster pegged it as a Mars Bar with licorice — then a spicier palate of chamomile, clove and almond. The Madeira cask sits in nicely. A couple find it slightly thin and one-note.
- Dates and cocoa
- Madeira well integrated
- Long warming finish

How does Thompson Bros. Dominican Rum 2013 taste?
Aggregated from 14 community reviews.
Chocolatey, date-heavy Dominican with Madeira Most call it one of the better Dominican rums they've had: chocolatey, dried-fruit driven, Madeira well integrated. Some find it a touch thin and one-dimensional, and the cask strength runs hot for a few.

A weighty nose. Lots of dates, cocoa nibs and nougat. Reminds me of a Mars Bar with some additional licorice notes. Some mint on the back end. A surprisingly spicy palate after the nose. Chamomile tea, almond, cream toffee and cloves towards the back end with very distant notes of raspberry. The finish is quite long and warming. The cloves from the palate hang around with some anise and raisin. A great rum. Heavy, flavourful and sophisticated. One to share with friends.

Nice DomRep, Madeira finish is very well integrated. A dangerous easy sipper...

Fantastic first foray into IB Dominican. This can quickly become addictive!

The Madeira cask suits this rum from the Dominican Republic without overwhelming the basic profile. A pleasant, not exaggerated sweetness carries the chocolaty flavor package mixed with almonds and raisins. Nice mouthfeel, little alcohol is noticeable. Minimally metallic in the aftertaste, but this hardly bothers. Perhaps a little one-dimensional, but delicious.

Für Dom. Rep.

I'm not a fan of wine barrels or barrels of fortified wine. But I think in the case of a rather "neutral" Spanish rum, it may contribute something. In addition to dried fruit and cocoa notes, I also smell something vinous - and that doesn't mix with anything here. Not earth-shattering but drinkable. Makes a good Old Fasioned with a few dashes of Choclate Bitters and a juicy orange zest. I'll try that with the rest of the sample.
