"Nase deutlich besser als Gaumen" is the recurring theme here. The OWH is Hampden's lowest-ester mark, so it reads gentler: tropical fruit, banana, glue and pear on the nose, but several tasters find the palate thin and watery after one year in ex-bourbon casks, with a vinegary, fruit-schnapps edge. A few actually preferred the unaged version.

8,3:On the nose, the first impression we get is very fruity with esters, glue, there are tropical fruits like pineapple, as molasses is vegetal with hay, a wood roasted with nuts, confectionery, a bit spicy. On aeration, citrus arises, some banana, pear, the molasses is herbaceous, there is a vinegar note. 7,7:On the palate, the attack is estery, fruity with tropical fruits like pineapple, some citrus, at first a bit confusing, disbalanced with notes of fruit schnapps, vinegar, a bit vegetal, as the roasted wood notes round our impression with confectionery and spices like vanilla, nutmeg. The molasses is herbaceous and musty, covered in honey, there is hay.The rum is more balanced now with citrus, pear and strawberry. 8,2:The finish is medium long, balanced with roasted wood notes like confectionery, spicy with nutmeg, the molasses is musty, earthy, as the fruits are fermented like pear, pineapple.. Hampden 8 Marks Collection - Aged vs. Unaged: Yuck! What happened to this? While the unaged OWH was still quite pleasant, this one is almost unpleasant. Thin on the palate and somehow savory, but in an unpleasant way. Conclusion: none of the 16 rums was a pleasure and the rating is only to be understood relatively among themselves. Still very interesting to try all Marks under the same conditions and taste the different expressions of fruit, glue, spice and surprisingly often umami. Soon a set with 3-5 years in cask?

A very disappointing rum compared to the unaged version. A beautiful, elegant nose of overripe banana with esters and a vegetal/dry herb and cedar wood side. The palate is acqueous and too diluted. Flavors struggle to express themselves. The finish is short, with tropical fruit and cedar wood at the end. At this stage, ageing in wood is not convincing; I think it needs to be much longer.

#5374 07.06.2025 Relaxing after a private tasting at my home with a few friends and now it's time to start testing these samples I got. Nose Fresh, faint wood, spice, light banana, light citrus, faint sugarcane, light earthy. Palate Fresh, faint wood, light pear, light pineapple, faint sugarcane, spice, light banana. Finish Medium long, faint wood, light roasted, fruits, light pineapple, light earthy. Empty glass Light citrus, light nutmeg, faint sugarcane, banana.

Here the barrel aging is noticeable through candied fruits with honey. However, the main part consists of fermented fruits with a good dose of vinegar. The OWH Blanco was also very sour. According to additional information of this set, the barrel influence is more prominent and present in the form of caramelization. The fruit notes are apple and pear. Finally, the syringol molecule brings wet wood notes.

Big Hampden 8 Marks Collection Tasting OWH 1 year: already on the nose clearly stronger aromas than the unaged one. Less nail polish, more tropical fruits (exact identification not possible). On the palate somewhat watery, green apple, stone fruit, and of course tropical fruits. Nose clearly better than palate.

OWH unstored vs. OWH 1st year stored: The unaged is difficult to drink at first. Very tangy and nothing else. At least a few fruity notes come through after some time. The one year in the barrel doesn't work miracles, but the tangy notes are significantly less (especially in the finish). Slight sweetness and significantly more fruity notes come through. Has definitely benefited from the storage.

The nose is rather tiring and unpleasant, very vinegar-heavy, sour and vegetal. On the palate, it rather reminds me of a briefly aged Williams or Mirabelle spirit; the light barrel aging helps overall but still rather average.

The nose has a nice fullness of green fruits. Apple with a caramel note. On the palate, rather burnt pears. I find it very pleasant. Can surely do something in cocktails too. Light ester notes.

Less convincing to me than the unaged version from the Marks Collection set because the wood influence is still clearly too unbalanced - harsh, roasted, slightly bitter. Interesting from an experimental point of view because the initial wood influence can be nicely traced.

The first of the 8 Marks Hampden Collection.. on the nose a high ester content and tropical fruits. On the palate this is confirmed, with a somewhat bitter finish but also some sharpness to be felt.. it's okay but I'm a bit disappointed.

➡️ OWH: nice surprise. Citrus, freshness and perfectly integrated alcohol. ➡️ LFCH: more discreet, flatter. The least convincing of the series. ➡️ LROK: things get serious. Pineapple, ripe fruits, acetone... Complex and already very Hampden. My favorite of the first half. ➡️ HLCF: arrival of varnish notes and the famous "funk." Interesting, but still a bit linear. 🚀 Second series: welcome to the stratosphere of esters ➡️ <>H: the heart of Hampden. Exotic fruits, banana, complexity and balance. The typical profile of the distillery. ➡️ HGML: the fruits recede, pastry and marzipan notes take over. ➡️ C<>H: no joke here. Nail polish remover, explosive acidity and impressive aromatic concentration. ➡️ DOK: the legend. An avalanche of fruits, pastries, funk and yet an amazing harmony. My absolute favorite of the evening. ❤️

The nose is inviting, although a bit different to the rest. The mouth brings soap and is more reminiscent of a fruit snaps than anything else. The finish is musty with nutmeg and tropical fruit. Musty and soapy on the finish make it weaker than others in the collection

Hampden 8 Marks Collection aged 1 year in ex-boubon casks, here the OWH, i.e. the rum in the series with the lowest ester content. Nevertheless, esters can be easily recognized in the nose, as well as glue. On the palate, however, there is still a slight bourban taste. One of the poorer Hampdens, but still excellent.
