18.01.2020 A nice little summer house meet up in ght cold part of the year. Good we had rums to keep us warm. Notes Medium dark in colour. Nose Fresh, light wood, faint chocolate, fruits, pineapple, earthy, faint nutts. Palate Round, oily, naturally sweet, light nutts, dried fruit, light tobacco, faint smoke. Finish Medium to long, wood, light roasted, faint caramel, faint chocolate, tobacco, light citrus.

A Cuban at cask strength is not so common. Nose fruity and also somehow meaty, a little vanilla, a little wood but not intense. Alcoholically spicy on the palate. Fruits and spices take a back seat to the wood and roasted notes. Pleasant mild finish with spice, barrel, roasted aromas and a little dried fruit. Good Cuban rum.

Clearly Cuban from the "Paraíso" distillery on the nose, less so on the palate, where it comes across more like a New Grove, albeit a yellow-fruity one. Despite or perhaps because of this confusion of the senses, this is a very expressive rum that is hardly inferior to its brothers from the legendary 1998 vintage. Thanks to Tschusikowsky for the sample.

Plantation and Cuba are not really my favorites or I didn’t expect much. But to be honest, I was more than positively surprised. I had no big expectations when I tried this, mainly wanted to try it as a mixer for Cuba Libre. But I was surprised myself that I liked it so much neat.

Today we have a small but fine Cubatasting. Ever since I tasted the Valdespino, I've been looking for a similar profile (tobacco, leather, dark fruits, old wood, fire chimney, light smoke, full-bodied oily and fat texture) at cask strength. Let's see if we can find it here. A Venezuelan has also sneaked in =P 1st Plantation Cuba: Dances out of line in terms of color. Fruitier and not at all what I imagine my Cuban to be like. The sweetest and also by far the most boring of the tasting. 75 pts (second tasting: -2 pts) 2nd Rome Deluxe Cuba: A positive surprise at.first tasting and still very tasty. Has the aromas mentioned at the beginning, also some yellow fruits, plus slightly creamy and quite wild on the palate. Not overly complex, but very pleasing. 86 pts (second tasting: +2 pts) 3rd Wudramclan Cuba 1992: Tastes like the consistent evolution of Romdeluxe's Cuban. No longer as wild, somewhat more one-dimensional fruit aromas, much more leather and tobacco, some ash. Very short and fruity-ashy finish. 85 pts. 4th The Whisky Jury Cuba 1978: When this came out I had high hopes: great bottler, almost unbelievable key data, that color... In this comparison, it seems to me that the Cubans not only lose their impetuousness with age, but also their variety of aromas and structure. All the fruit in this rum is burnt, strangely enough this rum is very light on the tongue and not fat and oily as I had hoped. The tobacco, the wood and the fruit literally turn to ash in the mouth. Somehow I like that, but on the other hand it is not at all an upgrade to the Rom Deluxe Cuban, if you compare them directly. 85 pts (third tasting: -4 pts) 5th Cadenheads Dictador 26 yo: My Cuban in a Venezuelan coat! That's how I imagine it! Great aromas, great oily, fat structure. Tobacco, old wood, some ash (for me still and fitting in the aroma spectrum). <3 88 pts. Many thanks to Mto75 for the samples!

Lots of wood, lots of spice, Virginia tobacco, lightly burnt sugar with banana peel and green cooking bananas and bitter roasted hazelnuts and lots of freshly ground black pepper as well as some citrus zest... great bottling!

Light sharpness, strong, dry, rich fruits, compote, the fruit combo is generally very great in this rum. Cherry, lychee, plum, pineapple, vanilla paired with tobacco and tea notes. Reminds partly of panettone with candied fruits. A very nice bottling.

For a Cuban, really good. Plantation gets a lot out with the cask finish. I like it, but in the end still very thin and watery.

Plantation / planteray advent calendar 2024 Zdenka Polácha Day 15 Cuba The nose intensely shows cognac, also hazelnuts and tobacco. Taste-wise it is still a sweeter profile, however very interesting and pleasant Cuba. Tobacco, fruit, chocolate.

It took ages before this one opens up totally (bottle is open since start of 2019). Along the toffee, the Virginia tobacco and the vanilla you got green and mature bananas mixed with peaches and orange's skin drenched in rose's water, all in perfect concentration (not too heavy like in the Ultimatum Rum version), very elegant bitterness (think young walnuts) and little tingling spices with an appealing echo of bbq smoke... A must-try for any rum geek, you're somewhere between Foursquare and New Grove!

Did not expect much, but the Sancti Spiritus at least did not disappoint. Pleasant sweetness with fine fruit note. That's okay. Especially because not everything is overwhelmed by the Plantation typical cask finish.
