Sancti Spiritus Plantation Single Cask Cuba LMDW 2003

Opinions land close together here: most tasters call it a good Cuban, a few find it thinner and duller than they'd hoped. The nose leans fruity — banana peel, orange skin, peach — over Virginia tobacco, toffee and roasted nuts. The palate is drier, with wood, spice and roast notes coming forward. One member sums it up as "nice Cuba profile but not extraordinary."

The community says
  • Great fruit combo
  • Tobacco and wood
  • But: Thin body

It took ages before this one opens up totally (bottle is open since start of 2019). Along the toffee, the Virginia tobacco and the vanilla you got green and mature bananas mixed with peaches and orange's skin drenched in rose's water, all in perfect concentration (not too heavy like in the Ultimatum Rum version), very elegant bitterness (think young walnuts) and little tingling spices with an appealing echo of bbq smoke... A must-try for any rum geek, you're somewhere between Foursquare and New Grove!

A Cuban at cask strength is not so common. Nose fruity and also somehow meaty, a little vanilla, a little wood but not intense. Alcoholically spicy on the palate. Fruits and spices take a back seat to the wood and roasted notes. Pleasant mild finish with spice, barrel, roasted aromas and a little dried fruit. Good Cuban rum.

Cuba taught the world to drink rum light. This is the island that gave us the Daiquiri, the Mojito and Bacardi, and the smooth, column-distilled Spanish style that became the most popular rum on earth. Today its rum is entirely state-run and shut out of the United States, yet Havana Club still ranks among the Caribbean's biggest brands.
