Ron Zacapa Etiqueta Negra
Several members reckon this older Etiqueta Negra beats the standard 23 because it's "not nearly as sweet" and shows more wood. Expect toffee, vanilla, caramel and a fat streak of oak, with spice and roasted notes underneath. At 43% it drinks round and easy, never thin. Still a sweet rum at heart — one taster flags almost unnatural milk-chocolate — but the softest of the range.

Soft, woody sweet rum, milder than the 23 Owners land on "a very drinkable sweet rum" — softer and woodier than its solera siblings, though sugar-shy drinkers still call it too sweet and a bit mainstream.

I think it’s better than the “23” cause it’s not nearly as sweet as that one. There’s also more taste of wood which make it better.

Awesome old vintage zacapa ! Miles apart from today's bottlings. Very round, you can definitely taste the 23y, it was certainly also partly in a sherry cask. Round and very drinkable with the 43% without being too thin. Of course, it's not necessarily worth today's market price, but it's definitely a delicious experience!

My goodness, this is sweet. The nose is actually quite charming with lots of sweetness and caramel. It's all rich and therefore fun. On the palate then only sweet. So sweet that it's almost cool again. Quite nice for sipping. The glass definitely dries up quickly. Completely absurd for the current market price. It was fun to finally have the Negra in the glass. Pure nostalgia. But nothing more.

Compared to RX2271, noticeably sweeter, with distinct (almost unnatural) milk chocolate aromas. Overall okay, but more for sweet rum drinkers...

Nose: Initially, the alcohol is relatively perceptible despite low strength of 43%. The alcohol sharpness quickly fades and wood and caramel notes, toasted notes and spices dominate. Mouth: very harmonious, alcohol very coherently integrated, caramel sweetness, spices, vanilla, neat wood. Overall, however, a very pleasant sweet rum, far less sweet than its brothers (eg, the 23 Solera). If you like it a little sweeter you won't go wrong with this one. Finish: maximum medium length, with caramel and spices.

It was my entry into the world of rum. I thought it was fantastic back then, but I wouldn't buy it today. It's just a nasty sugar sludge.

absolute mainstream; had expected more at the price and name; but can always be tasted well
