Edit: tasted again, not bad, but from memory it doesn't come close to the Anniversary. Just sipped briefly, but the first impression is on the up again. Extensive tasting will take place on Saturday with the Franconian Tasting Gang and special guest Jakob.

Now the latest Blender's Reserve bottling and unfortunately the weakest for me! It is clearly too unbalanced for me and has nothing to do with the original version. The nose initially gives the impression of a Barbados in the glass. But only briefly, then lots of sweet/sour red fruits with wood and vanilla appear. So far so good. On the palate, there is an initial sweetness that only lasts for a short time. Then a strange mixture of spices and fruit that doesn't really harmonize. This also continues in the finish

8,6:On the nose, the first impression we get is roasted wood and tropical fruits like unripe banana.There are chocolate, caramel, roasted nuts, perhaps toffee.We cannot miss dried fruits and citrus, metallic notes... On an aeration, molasses is with menthol and vegetal, the wood spicy, the fruits bourbon yellow, citrusy and very pleasant... 8,6:On the palate, the attack is very fruity, spicy with all kinds of tropical fruits like mango, passion fruit, banana, perhaps mandarine and dried currants.The wood is spicy, dry and very roasted with nuts, chocolate, caramel and pepper. The molasses is dark, bitter with licorice. When rested, it becomes more medicinal with menthol, rubber and tar.The wood is more charred, earthy, there is some fudge.Nicley balanced and round, as vegetal notes neutralize sweetness from charred wood notes. 8,5:The finish is tasty and long, woody and dry.There are coconut, tasty tropical and red fruits, citrus, delicious chocolate and nuts, complemented with earthy and dirty plastic, tar and bitter molasses with some wood tannins... In the nose the main markers I get are Barbados and Trinidad (which isn’t surprising at all, looking at the blend components after the tasting 🙈). Interesting and more in the lighter side of things adding some additional fruits to the Barabdos profile. Alcohol a bit to present on the nose for my liking. On the palate again, I get a bit to much sting in a profile dominated by Barbados. Feels not quite as round as some of the other BT bottlings.

And of course a Black Tot on Black Tot day :-) I quite like it, it's very spicy and roasted on the palate, but you can also recognize tropical fruits and a slight sweetness thanks to vanilla, caramel, and chocolate.

Tasted this great blend from Black Tot during Sweden Rumfest 2025. Their Master Blender Oliver Chilton makes a new edition of Black Tot Master Blender’s Reserve every year. The 2024 edition have a Bajan focus with 60% Barbados rum in it. Besides the Bajan rum there are also rum from Trinidad, Jamaica and Guyana. Remarkable components is 22yo Mount Gay, 26yo Caroni, 25yo Clarendon and 28yo New Yarmouth. The nose is full bodied, fruity and spicy with aromas of pineapple, mint, strawberry, lime, chili and coconut. At the palate it’s still full bodied but also buttery, sweet and fruity with flavors of honey, banana, vanilla and mango. The finish is rather long with flavors of licorice and dark chocolate.

31.08.2025 Retasting at the German Rum Fest 2025. ------------ #5348 13.09.2024 Relaxing a bit 😊 Nose Light wood, spice, roasted, fruits, light banana, faint chocolate, light caramel, light nutts. Palate Round, medium spicy, wood, roasted, light anise, fruits, dried fruit, light citrus, light mint, faint tar. Finish Long and warm, wood, light roasted, light licorice, light mint, light citrus, dried fruit. Empty glass Licorice, caramel, vanilla, light berries.

Delicious Black ToT. In direct conparsion to the 2022 and the 2023 version, this one is ahead! It looks like we‘re moving forward! Nice complexity and nice ester, rubber and mango notes. The finish tastes like a creme brulee with a orange peel and minty leaf on the top! The alcohol is integrated well!

A shadow of its former self. Anyone who knows the previous bottlings (especially those from 2020) can only be disappointed. Despite a really long standing time (necessary!), this blend simply remains boring. Of course, that's complaining at a high level. But who can get out of their skin? I'm afraid this rum will remain on the shelves: It will be too sub-par for advanced aficionados and too expensive for curious beginners, among whom it is bound to find some fans in terms of taste. All in all, a sad performance. Perhaps the series would be better discontinued.

So on the nose at first a lot of Barbados (Foursquare notes) glue/polish, fruity. On the palate, initially ester/fruity, then after a while in the glass light rubber and dirty/dark notes, dried fruit. All in all, the 2024 makes quite a young impression. Personally, it didn't quite pick me up, I was expecting a little more complexity.

Tasting with Mr. Daniel Jungberg on 18.07.2026 RX 21002 Black Tot Rum. Nose: Salmiak, light banana note. Burnt caramel, roasted nuts. Palate: Light oak influence, with a bit of sweet fruit, English licorice. Slight hint of citrus fruit. The finish is warm with mint, citrus freshness, and spicy oak. Glass: Spiced oak cask. Return of Caroni to Black Tot Rum Master Blender’s Reserve! Definitely didn't hurt. A nice complex piece, intense nose - spices, leather, chocolate. On the palate it's rather a gentler piece with sweet tones of the same elements offered by the nose.

Tasting notes : Nose: Exotic fruit, caramel, leather, light esters. Palate: very fruity and citrusy, softened by notes of vanilla and caramel. Simple, effective, with a little length carried by licorice, it seems to me. Finish: a little shorter than the others, sweeter too: citrus, vanilla, milk chocolate. The most affordable & the most gourmand, without hesitation! An easy-sipper.

Among the last 3 master blenders, this one is in third place. I had a harder time getting into it. I had a set of notes that didn’t really inspire me. A bit bothered by some bitterness.

Sitting in a beautiful mountain cabin in Norway, listening to the nearby waterfalls, enjoying the view... and a nice Black Tot. Unfortunately, I don't have the predecessor with me for counter-tasting, but that makes it a bit fairer: Nose: from memory, there wasn't such a high proportion of Jamaica in the predecessor. So Jamaica is up front with esters, lemon and passion fruit. This makes it very fresh. This is followed by somewhat more restrained toasted aromas with pencil shavings and young wood. Becomes increasingly sweeter, caramel and light honey. Overall a little young. 7.8 Palate: slightly salty-bitter at the beginning and actually seems a little watery without being really flat. Light esters with lemon zest. Spicy, mainly nutmeg and a little pepper. It also seems a little too young on the palate. There are better navy blends. But ok overall. 7,8

Tasting in the company of F. Kraemmer D. 18.07.2026 Nose on an adventure👃: I sense salmiak, burnt caramel and banana Tongue on an adventure 🥃: I clearly taste a lovely cask influence, English licorice, spicy and a little aftertaste of mint. The tail of the story💫: Lots of menthol, lots of warmth. This is the second time I taste it and I'm impressed It really is a good blend!

Franconian Rum Tasting Gang & Jakob, 2023-07-27 "Vorglühen": The first Black Tot since the 50th Anniversary that isn't too sweet for me. But somehow I can't get excited about it. Too unspectacular, too simple, too boring.

My first Black Tot! Slightly phenolic on the nose, medicinal influences with dark fruit. This is also confirmed on the tongue, alcohol comes out a little, but is not too dominant. Dark chocolate, barrel and strong aromas. Delicious rum that needs time and can be enjoyed at leisure

Not bad, not a sensation. There's more going on on the palate than on the nose - somewhat thicker and fuller-bodied. Sweeter too. Somewhat alcoholic on the finish. Glad to be able to try the sample, but I don't need a bottle of this.

Nice nose with oak and tropical fruits. The taste is nicely spicy and rusty, I would say. Relatively balanced. There should be a hint of chocolate. Definitely a tasty rum I can recommend. In the after-tasting, it improved slightly. Nice aroma.

Softer nose but nice with tropical fruit and vanilla. Very nice dose of menthol or mint on the palate, vanilla, spices, and quite a bit of astringency. In the finish, a slight mint, tropical fruit, and tired barrel. A successful piece, only slightly marred by astringency.

Tried it on the 13th GRF. What can I say. A nice solid navy rum. Similar to the 2023, it really appealed to me at the fair, but here too I simply don't need another bottle or sample. A solid palate pleaser with good complexity. Exciting is different and the price is too high.

Sample 3 of 3 from UK Brand Ambassador and what a way to finish tasting of Black Tot! The jump in price is somewhat vast HOWEVER the jump in both flavour and complexity is equally vast and therefore fully justifiable. The overall flavour to me is “old, aged spirits” which is definitely high praise as I’ve had less complex whiskies with WAY higher price tags!! Deep and intricate sherry notes, slight fruit notes, lovely level of oak tannins and oak spices as well with a finish that lingers long enough to remind you of what you’ve just had! The longer in the glass, the more it changes as well - nosing upon pouring provides oak spiciness and barrel influence that eventually give way to roasted coffee notes, some dark chocolate and maybe a little caramel but like caramel drizzled on a red fruit The taste is exquisite - the word that sums it up for me is “integrated” no one item in the blend dominates or try to take over, each influence plays its part and then moves on providing a lovely complexity. Very happy with this one - a solid 8.5/10 for me

I would have expected a Barbados palate pleaser, but not at all. Clearly more bitter than a Foursquare with dark Guyana notes. I also wouldn't have thought that such a minimal Caroni share would have such a strong impact on the overall flavor profile. Personally, I find the 50th Anniversary, the 21 and 25 a bit rounder.

Quite different from the rest of MBR. More fruity with typical coconut, vanilla and brown sugar well known from Barbados, but enhanced with spices and woodiness form Trinidad with a just a punch of overripe banana from Jamaica. Overall, an easy-to-drink but still tasty and satisfying release that shows a more-fruity side than the previous version. And, if anyone wants to ask, it is not dull at all, but maybe less unique than the rest of MBR’s.

And here we have another BlackTot, this time for 2024. I smell burnt wood, tobacco, chocolate, tropical fruits. In the taste, leather is added, the taste of burnt cask is even more pronounced, and thanks to this, the taste of wabille appears. Emotionally I liked the previous vintage a little more but definitely the 2024 is an honest and good rum.

15/03/25: tasted @ Brussels Rhum Festival. Note: I was experiencing severe palate fatigue. First time tasting one of the Master Blender's releases. The list of rums in this blend is quite impressive and I liked it quite a bit. I'm curious for the other yearly releases.

First impression not really convincing. Seems very young, somewhat undefined, alcohol could be better integrated. I can't really taste Guyana, there is a somewhat bitter finish reminiscent of Clarendon.

Unfortunately not as good as its predecessors, very unbalanced and for me no clear structure recognizable in this blend, the interaction of the different rums does not harmonize. If I remember the quality and level of its predecessors, 2024 drops off rapidly. The nose is still halfway ok, but it lacks a lot on the palate. The finish is short, which is a shame.

Tasted at the UK RumFest. Significant drop down from the 2023 MBR (tasted alongside) and other earlier editions. The move to a heavy Barbados (60%) and Foursquare component to the blend is very evident on the nose and taste profile. Overall it is just a little boring of a blend from my perspective. After the RumFest I bought a bottle of the 2023 MBR but wouldn’t justify buying this for the price.
