Creamy vanilla, dry oak and a menthol-fresh green streak — this is Saint James playing it soft and elegant rather than loud. Tasted this extraordinary rum at Rhum Fest Paris 2026. It’s a rum I’ve been longing for, but never had bought. It’s aged for at least 6 years in small casks. The nose is elegant, complex, sweet, woody, fruity, fresh, spicy, vegetal, nutty and roasted with scents of figs, dates, cherries, prunes, coffee, mocha, cinnamon, nutmeg and walnuts. At the palate it’s complex, full bodied, smooth, warm, woody, fatty, fruity, spicy and balanced with flavors of brandy, cigar, licorice, banana, apricots, dates, oranges, cherries, prunes and chocolate. The finish is rather long.

Such an aesthetic bottle can, in certain circumstances, serve as a cover-up for the juice it contains, and unfortunately this cuvée falls into this precise case. The DNA of Saint James is transparent here and looks pale, even among the permanent range. The nose is the closest to the typical dark spirit of the distillery with notes of oak, coffee, vanilla, and chili. Dried apricots and floral notes complete a soft, simple, and rather reserved profile. The attack on the palate is thin and light. Some vegetal and herbal notes bring bitterness, while raisins, spices, and wood confront the palate. There is not much to say about it except that it is quite flat and rather disappointing. The finish is not very long, it recalls floral notes, herbs, dried fruits, sugarcane, spices, roasted notes, and caramel but it does not shine more than that. A rum that wants to look pretty but unfortunately has little substance.

One of the best rums today. A beautiful Agricole from Saint James. Very woody and spicy on the nose. On the palate also woody and spicy, also very vegetal, Agricole 100% recognizable. Really tasty that one ;)

An elegant and accessible Martinique agricole rum, marked by a beautiful creamy vanilla, a smooth texture, and a menthol freshness in the finish. The nose is delicate, mixing dried fruits, wood, mild spices, and cooked apple. On the palate, the balance between vanilla roundness, vegetal notes, and slight menthol freshness creates a beautiful harmony. The finish, moderately long, remains fresh and woody, with a vegetal and dry touch. Perfect pairing with an intense dark chocolate (70% or more): its noble bitterness contrasts with the rum's sweetness and highlights its freshness and vanilla. An ideal moment to share as a duo, for a refined and intimate tasting.

At Rajiv's Beautiful decanter, but disappointing content, low in aromas, lacking attack and personality. I preferred the 12-year-old, much more common but effective and pleasant. Maybe for palates finer than mine?
