Odd thing about a 21-year-old cask-strength Trinidad rum: the wood stays quiet. Instead you get that classic TDL 2002 signature — cool mint and menthol, ripe peach, sour cherry, a whisper of black tea and vanilla. One taster caught "berries, tea, vanilla and mint" with a woody finish. Oily on the palate, and the 55.7% barely shows. Round, sweet-leaning, and very easy to drink.

I guessed the new Planteray TDL 2009. It was RX21416: TWJ TDL Macau

For me, the first RdL is still the king of the 2002 TDLs. Unfortunately, the sample has been empty for a long time. Here in the crosstasting between the second RdL, the old RA, the RC and the TWJ for Macau, it's probably all about the other places on the podium. The color is slightly darker than the RA and RC. The nose is more restrained than the others, softer, less herbal - somewhat reminiscent of the Cadenhead 2002. Lots of fruit, of course peach, mango, but also lime. The mint is comparatively delicate and fresh. There is also a candied almond reminiscent of Orgeat. What is missing is the otherwise typical black tea and many dark aromas that it brings with it. In the mouth, it's a bit like the FRC Sea Shepard, with the almost invisible alcohol. As with the FRC, it's a little too thin, and unlike the Cadenhead, it doesn't have that full-bodied mango eau-de-vie. The finish is a dream, the mango with a little fresh mint really shines. The nose and finish have the potential for a top place in the batch. But the mind is simply too thin.

A rum I'm still unsure about... do I find it tasty and especially balanced or maybe a bit boring. At first it lacks edges and corners, but over time you discover some interesting facets. Alcohol perfectly integrated, which is easier at 55%. I have to try it again alone. Today tasted again with RX22222 (Swell) and RX15322 (Rasta). Compared to the two somehow tamer, sweeter, more accessible.

A very successful bottling from TWJ, but nothing outstanding. It joins the mass of other very good bottlings from the years 2001-2003. But it's nice that there are so many good T.D.Ls. So everyone can find their own favorite

Destined for an exclusive market, this bottling is just as discreet in its profile. The nose is very round and delicate. Menthol is very present, accompanied by some tea notes. The fruity side of TDL comes through strongly with peach, pineapple, and mango offering an exotic but rather subdued profile due to the balance. There is also a vanilla woodiness, soft spice notes, and caramel. A fragrant, sensual, and generous profile. The palate remains creamy, soft, and delicate. The profile is a bit rougher, with the herbal side of the tea standing out more despite the freshness of the menthol. The fruits are less pronounced, although peach, cherry, and citrus persist. The profile is more woody, spicier, and more roasted but still maintains a nice roundness. The alcohol is very well integrated. The finish is long, bitter, fresh, and spicy. The smoky and woody side comes through, as well as the menthol and black tea. Some fruits (peach, cherry) hold up alongside the spices and tannins. A good TDL 2002 in all its glory, with the usual markers presented with class.

#5572 20.08.2025 Enjoying a set of samples after a a very long work day, luckily I will be off early on Friday for compensation. Nose Balanced, fresh, wood, light roasted, light mint, faint floral, light caramel, spice, light cherry. Palate Oily, wood, light roasted, faint rubber, light citrus, spice, light chocolate, light mint, light cherry. Finish Medium to long, oily, wood, faint smoke, light nutmeg, light chocolate, mint. Empty glass Chocolate, mint, faint rubber, vanilla, light peach.

In the meantime, I no longer find all these T.D.Ls so exciting. As they say, it's now a nice uniform mash, but I don't think it really stands out. Alcohol is well integrated, which was to be expected with the ABV.

Again a very inviting nose with vanilla, caramel, yellow fruits and mint. Very round and accessible overall. This continues on the palate. The alcohol is perfectly balanced. Not the most complex T.D.L., but definitely delicious.

Insanely great 2002 Vintage. Rarely have I experienced such an intense sour cherry note in rum, paired with subtle fresh spearmint, grated frozen peach and a little vanilla, as well as tannins like from strong Earl Grey tea. Hammer!

At first impression really very round and balanced, great balance. Alcohol also very well integrated. Really an easy drinker with the typical markers of a TDL 2002. The finish brings out the mint/herbal notes. Let's see how it develops. Edit: Direct comparison RX21416 and RX24534 These two bottlings supposedly come from sister casks, which makes sense as both are incredibly similar. Both have lots of ripe peach and subtle mint and are overall very round, maybe even a bit too round. RX24534 seems slightly stronger to me, but that might be because the RX21416 sample has been here longer. Otherwise, I find hardly any differences between the two. For my taste, both are above average among the 2002/2003 releases, without standing out through special markers. Both are easy to drink, but the high price remains.

TDL is immediately recognizable. First red fruits with mint on the nose. Tea. Alcohol not pungent even shortly after pouring. Then come hints of bicycle inner tube. Plus vanilla and spices (something like nutmeg, allspice and pepper) as well as wood. Then really nice and oily in the mouth. Sweetness at first. Then red fruits followed by spice (again nutmeg, allspice and pepper). Very slight bitterness at the end (dark chocolate, mint stems). And again and again mint. The 21 years are noticeable due to the rather light cask influence. Mostly in the finish. Great!

A 2002 T.D.L from The Whisky Jury. Mint and menthol are present but rather moderate. Along with fruity notes and very well integrated alcohol. A bit more sweetness and relatively little cask influence. Above average T.D.L.

For me, the nose is dominated by sour cherries with a hint of black tea. Quite pleasant. The taste is quite minty with peach. Wow ... Really nice rum that is very pleasant to drink.

A very nice and complex nose that draws a great TDL profile. On the palate lots of barrel influence with distinct bitter notes. Here the rum is darker than expected. Mint, peach and tea aromas accompany the rum from start to finish. I basically like it very much, but the bitter substances on the palate are a bit too pronounced. Here the barrel may have worked a bit too much and the rum should have been bottled a bit earlier.

A tasty, complex TDL that already shows its class on the nose. Braised peach, mango, and candied pineapple meet vanilla, apricot jam, and fine herbal notes. There's also a subtle hint of wood varnish that gives the rum additional depth. On the palate, it presents full, fruity, and wonderfully round. Tropical fruits, papaya, and juicy pear in syrup provide intense sweetness, while herbs, citrus peel, and creamy wood notes offer balance and structure. Despite the strong 56.1%, it feels surprisingly harmonious and is very drinkable. The finish is long, warm, and extremely pleasant. Ripe fruits, candied orange, soft spices, as well as vanilla and white chocolate remain present for a long time. An exceptionally successful TDL. The combination of tropical fruit, creamy sweetness, spice, and wood makes this rum a real pleasure.
