The Whisky Jury Uitvlugt (Port Mourant) The Many Faces Of Rum 1999

Sipped neat is the only way most tasters take this 23-year Port Mourant. You get the classic pencil shavings, leather and a little wood, but a persistent sour, mineral edge and a thin, watery body divide people. Almond and frangipane show up, if a touch one-note. One member's summary rings true: "Nice rum, but not Uitvlugt."

The community says
  • Pencil shavings, leather
  • Long finish
  • But: Thin, watery body

Thin, sour-edged Port Mourant sipper Recognizably Port Mourant — pencil shavings, leather, light tar — but many find it too thin and oddly sour for 23 years in the cask. Fans of the estery side rate it higher.

Floral and fruity on the nose (stone fruit, passion fruit), plus old barrel. Candied on the palate, cardboard, brine, but also somewhat watery.

This Uitvlugt from The Whisky Jury doesn't really inspire me. On the nose, I perceive quite sweet aromas of cherry and similar fruits that remind me more of a Ten Cane. On the palate, the expected aromas, but unfortunately in far too thin a ratio. Alcohol is not noticeable. The finish is relatively short.

As expected, I was once again looking forward to a few pencil shavings, which I could also taste. Unfortunately, this bottling is a little too sour for me overall. Nice to have tried, but there are better ones.

Well... Reminds me more of gin than rum. It has something of juniper distillate, old, wet shoebox and this strange light acidity and minerality. Quite strange, also seems extremely watered down, I also suspect an ex-Scotch cask here, seems slightly peaty and salty in the finish. Too bad.

Das Port Mourant-Profil ist schon erkennbar, aber leider ist er etwas dünn, aber dafür natürlich sehr geschmeidig. In Abgang leichte torfige Whisky Note.

Somewhat mixed feelings here due to the key data. Nose ok. Grassy, earthy, woody and a little fruit. Quite thin in the mouth at first and, in my opinion, meaningless. But then the notes from the nose come to the fore. Plus a subtle "perfume note" (floral). Quite a short finish.

Guyana

Avg Rating 8.4/10 over 1,600 Rums

Guyana is the last home of the wooden still, and the only rum country where the place on the label is almost never the place the rum was made. Its rum, called Demerara after the river, went from 109 distilleries to one, and the estates that closed live on as marks: codes for a recipe, not for a machine. Reading them is the whole skill.
