Three years old and it drinks like a much bigger rum — glue, overripe tropical fruit and honey up front, with a savoury umami streak several tasters keep flagging. More than one person swears it could pass for a tropical Long Pond blind. The 60% is well integrated until the finish, where it turns wild and a touch hot. That sunbaked-plastic note polarizes, but the fruit reins it in.

A rum tasted at GRF in 2024. A broad and rich nose with yellow fruits and banana. A super interesting umami side that you find throughout the tasting. The entry on the palate is smooth with the same aromas as on the nose plus some esters. The finish is short/medium but the fruity aromas and umami remain much longer. A surprising rum for its age (3 years), balanced and interesting. It just lacks a bit more depth.

I'm torn about how good I really think it is. From what I remember of the previous Fiji from this vintage in the glass, this one from the Wild Series lives up to its name. It's wilder than the others. I'll probably compare it with others again when I get the chance.

8,8:On the nose, the attack of esters, glue is obvious, quickly settles with overripe tropical fruits except a banana is unripe, covered with honey.A wood is roasted with a caramel and pastry, a bit spicy, especially with umami note. On aeration, a molasses is vegetal, red and yellow fruits show up, as note of a milk chocolate.This is very a very balanced rum on the nose. 8,7:On the palate, the attack is fruity, still estery with tropical fermented fruits like pineapple, banana, later with yellow fruits, citrus, the fruits are melted in honey, as the wood is roasted, spicy with caramel, pastry, vanilla, salt and umami.The molasses is vegetal, minty, the rum is all around round. 8,7:The finish is long, dry, new notes join as floral, tannic, some metallic and confectionery with crunchy bread.

This Fiji rum immediately won me over at the GRF13. Now it's time to test whether I was right at the fair - it's not easy with so many tastings in such a short space of time. I find the nose alone stunning: I can clearly smell strong tropical long pond umami notes here, awesome! This is a nose that I like to linger over for a long time. I also find the great tropical Long Pond umami notes on the palate and in the finish, and not just a little but a full load! I wouldn't be at all surprised if, in a blind tasting, many an expert here thought they had a tropical 2005 Long Pond in their glass. There is an interesting minty note in the finish. Not as strong as in the well-known T.D.Ls, but clear. The alcohol is very well integrated. Very good, extremely unusual Fiji, I will probably need a second bottle.

I tried this at the GRF 2024. Very nice nose, glue, fruity etc. On the palate it was to flat, but the finish had a very cool long lasting minty note. You can love it or hate it… At the end of the day for me it was a good rum, but to harsh and to expensive as a daily sipper, so I didn’t bought a bottle.

I really liked this Fiji rum. We have a lot of esters here, but also tropical fruits (pineapple) on the nose and palate. Also, I could still detect glue on the nose. Really nice rum.

A very special rum with esters and fruits in mass that somehow seem plastic. The mouthfeel is warm, oily, pleasant and at the same time somehow very wild. I taste here a very special (great) note that is very familiar to me but I can't define it. The alcohol is perfectly integrated, the finish is long with the aforementioned note in the foreground. Many thanks @ Rumtata for the sample! But now I need a bottle =D

Post-tasting GRF 2024: Smell is sweet and caramel with a fruit cocktail. On the palate, even more sweetness towards honey and a slight barrel influence. The 60% is quite well integrated except in the finish where it gets a bit wild and alcoholic. Actually a nice thing, just too sweet and one-dimensional.

GRF13: An unusual Fiji for me... somehow artificial and fruity in taste, kind of interesting but not quite my thing... but on the other hand something new in the glass again. It will surely find its fans.

Unusual but exciting young Fiji rum! While most young Fijis are just wild and unruly, I find some notes here that I rather know from older bottlings, although the overall impression clearly indicates a young rum. Characteristic, especially on the nose, is the smell of sun-tanned plastic, which is only very subtle on the palate and is restrained by fruit aromas. Unfortunately, I (and RumX) lack information about the cask used, but something tells me that previously port or something else dark-red distilled from grapes was in the cask. This foreign, almost forced taste unfortunately leads me to deduct a few points, as the overall product confuses me rather than excites me.

#5336 Tasting at the German Rum Fest 2024 where I forgot to put the tasting live 😂 Nose Fresh, light wood, fruits, light citrus, faint marzipan, light polish, ester, faint mint. Palate Oily, balanced, light wood, faint smoke, fruits, light citrus, light pineapple, light ester, spice, faint honey. Finish Long and warm, fresh, light wood, light citrus, light ester, faint floral, faint caramel.

The first bottling from the vintage from Fiji. Fruity, spicy, esters and honey sweetness. A little bit artificial. Still found it interesting and curious how it develops with longer aging.

Nose: at first an interesting combination of ester, glue and honey. I really like the honey note. Also some caramel. After a short time, clear fruit notes can be detected. However, I can't define them more precisely. Taste: Good ester and fruit (not further definable for me). Also a pleasant sweetness which probably expresses itself here as vanilla. Over time, the fruit note becomes more dominant. A bit of a strange aftertaste – is that what others call plastic? Interesting and tasty but the sample is enough for me. Fiji is definitely a country where I want to try more.

Very nice Fiji rum, one of two bottles I bought at the Rum Festival. Fiji is still very interesting price-wise, for me sometimes like a mix between Barbados and Jamaica. The young age doesn't make the rum any less complex.

Pavel Špaček tasting calendar 4 2024 Young and wild Fiji. Associations with Jamaica are clear here - pronounced esters, glue-like chemistry, sweetness of overripe tropical fruit. Along with that some medicinal notes and after exhaling young wood and very background caramel appear. Esters and fruit also appear in the taste, only the chemical side is a bit more artificial? plastic? In the finish then a slight bitterness of roast and black tea. I don’t usually seek out young rums, but I like this one. For me a great Fiji and I’m glad someone chose this destination!
