Clarendon Flensburg Rum Company EMB (Special Bottling for 13th German Rumfest) EMB 2009
Sip this one slowly and give it air — at 65% it bites, and nearly everyone says so. The nose wins people over: tropical and red fruits, glue, a little vanilla and oak. Then the palate turns sharp, metallic and minty, with an Amarone-cask edge that splits the room. One taster called it a "tropical Jamaican Caroni clone." A few water drops help.

How does Clarendon Flensburg Rum Company EMB (Special Bottling for 13th German Rumfest) EMB 2009 taste?
From community reviews · summarized with AI
Great nose, hot sharp Amarone-cask palate Loved noses, contested palates. Most agree the smell is lovely but the high ABV bites hard and the Amarone finish divides people — some find it complex, others just harsh and medicinal.

Most helpful positive review
Nose very nice with tropical notes, on the palate lots of mint, bitterness in the finish, alcohol could be better integrated.

Served as a welcome drink on the Kirsch Cruise. The nose was still quite promising, but unfortunately the palate couldn't keep up. Too alcoholic and too sharp-edged for me. Too bad Kirsch, that was probably nothing. I'm sorry, but the rating isn't even good enough for pleasant - it's just mediocre

Finish does some good work on the nose plenty of fruits

Great nose. The tropical maturation brings in a great intensity. Unfortunately quite beastly on the palate.

Day trip Münster July 2025. Pub Whisky Dungeon. Next a Clarendon from FRC. On the nose red fruits, tropical fruits and glue. On the palate also red and tropical fruits, but very alcoholic and sharp-edged.

I tried this rum on the Kirsch Cruise. It was a love-hate! On one hand, poorly integrated alcohol, the Amarone cask which dominates, and in the end the price. Positively, I liked the cool menthol-mint note (strongly reminiscent of Fisherman's Friends). At a price under €80, I would have taken it.

Ooof it really burns only if you have a bad day - but if you have a good day where you notice the burning less, it's just a crazy explosion of flavor. But so far almost all EMBs I've had in the glass have burned extremely - so I attribute this to a distillate-typical composition of esters and congeners. The nose is damn beautiful with associations of yellow fruits, glue, vanilla and oak. On the palate it first delivers the typical EMB markers briefly and then goes into a very long and dirty finish. Every sip really changes in the finish and I either have the full raisiny Amarone profile (for me the best Amarone finish I've had so far in a spirit) - or the rind of very long aged hard cheese on the tongue. I find this rum mega exciting and complex - 100€ I don't find an exaggerated price now for 9 years of tropical aging +x. Since I can't subjectively understand the really very sobering reviews for this rum at all, I suspect that many either don't like the Amarone profile in connection with EMB or haven't really tasted beyond the sharpness that the rum really brings.

The alcohol bites a bit on the nose. If you look past that, there are tropical fruits, some glue, spices, medicinal notes, something sour (the Amarone cask?!). I quite like it. Unfortunately, the palate is a letdown. Quite medicinal, peppery, sharp, and again the alcohol is unfortunately too present.

#5277 24.04.2025 Running some samples while watching Legend, the movie about brothers in crime. Nose Fresh, medium intense, fruits, light glue, light pineapple, faint mint, faint tobacco. Palate Light oily, light wood, fruity, light banana, overripe, spice, faint mint, light ester, faint mango. Finish Long and warm, oily, fruits, light citrus, spice, light wood. Empty glass Light chocolate, light citrus, vanille, light mint, light tobacco. German Rum Fest 2024 sample.

A bit too alcoholic sharp on the palate. The finish is personally too intense/dominant for me but otherwise generally fits well with EMB with tropical aging. Still a solid rum. For 100€/70cl however not something I would need a bottle of.

The welcome drink on the Kirsch Rum Cruise. Very promising on the nose but the barrel influence from the Amarone cask was just not my thing, shame as I hoped for a more relaxed easy sipper as a Sinder bottling.
Review by Jakob
Fruits, wood, metallic hints and a rather intense alcohol impact. A demanding rum, the EMB profile remains recognizable but gets lost somewhat in the finish and the high alcohol. Needs some time in the glass, only conditionally suitable for a direct tasting impression at a fair.
Review by Schnubbii
The nose is quite fruity, but on the palate it comes across quite brutal and untamed. Bitter at first with mint, herbs and eucalyptus; the alcohol integration could be better. Its strengths then play out in the comparatively long and fruity finish. A bit of water makes it rounder and better.
Review by Serge
Quite fruity on the nose and actually quite tasty. On the palate it gets a bit rougher. The Amarone finish has softened the harsh rum somewhat, but I still don't really like the taste.
Review by crazyforgoodbooze
Nose top, palate flop. Sorry ... Too alcoholic and sharp, metallic for my taste. Even though the aroma is basically delicious and the Amarone finish brings in an exciting flavor note. I would have expected more...

Tasted at the Rum Cruise on the 13th GRF: In my eyes a total failure and unworthy of a trade fair bottling! Rough, sharp-edged, little good from the actually tasty EMB profile. The finish is noticeable but has by no means fulfilled its job, a pity!
Review by JFehr
GRF13 Somewhat unbalanced, alcohol could be better integrated. Nicely fruity.
Review by Alexander Rasch
Tried it at the 13th GRF. I actually liked it even though the alcohol wasn't perfectly integrated. But I didn't find it that dramatic. The nose wasn't that special yet, but the rum fully caught me on the finish. That was fun. Eucalyptus and menthol mixed with dark fruits and barrel. That was nice.

11-04-2025 - Rate 7.9 Like the nose very much. Like a lot of Clarendon I have tasted. Tropical fruit and alcohol from the high ABV. The taste surprised me. Glue and rubber combined with tropical fruits and some barrel. Can’t taste any Amarone. In short a kind of tropical Jamaican Caroni clone 😉👍🏻
Review by Volkmar Weber
Extremely biting, sharp, and unbalanced. Nose was promising, but completely disappointing in the mouth. Since rating 6.0 means pleasant, rating accordingly low. Unfortunately not pleasant at all and biggest disappointment at GRF 2024.
