The twist here is a red-wine cask on a young Hampden/Worthy Park blend — a pairing most tasters expected to clash and ended up liking. Glue, overripe banana and grilled pineapple hit first, with grapes and a light rosé tint from the Zweigelt wine barrel rounding off the sharp edges. Dry and peppery at 64,3%, thin in body, but the ester punch carries it.

Taste-wise flat for me. Lots of esters. Funky, unbalanced. Hyped niche product. Price-wise okay for the alcohol content, but not my thing. The Finnish red wine cask doesn't convince me here. Stays in the bar as an example of high ester. Wouldn't buy again.

#5009 30.12.2024 Relaxing after getting the roast prepared for tomorrow. Nose Light wood, ester, fruity, overripe, faint floral, light glue, grapes, light pineapple. Palate Round, light wood, ester, fruity, light pineapple, light banana, light floral, light glue, naturally sweet, spice. Finish Medium to long, warm, light wood, ester, fruits, light glue, raisin, light citrus. The empty glass has some chocolate, earthy and a light vegetal note.

I didn't have high expectations, but these were clearly exceeded. The red wine barrel works wonderfully with the high-ester rum. I am even sure that the individual components were significantly worse than the overall product. Great craftsmanship. Very intensely drinkable high ester Jamaican rum with a restrained red wine note. The price alone deserves praise, of course. It's great that you can still experience something like this.

Delicious high ester Worthy Park & Hampden blend. I had concerns about the finish... but thankfully it is not very dominant and even rounds off the rum a bit. Nice ester bomb with lots of fruit. Value for money is especially noteworthy here!! Very solid 3/5 in Mai Tai. Edit: Even though the finish luckily doesn't take over here, I am and remain no fan of it... a few years and without the finish, this would definitely deserve an 80+ rating.

Surprisingly round blend from Worthy Park and Hampden. Plenty of esters but well integrated, aromatic, round and balanced, the red wine finish is not too dominant and brings light tannins and a nice rosé color tone to the glass. Also probably the best value for money at the GRF for 30€!

8,2:On the nose, the first impression we get is with lot's of esters, red wine and overripe tropical fruits with pineapple, later banana, medicinal with glue.The wood is roasted and spicy, molasses vegetal. On aeration, lime, cola notes comes out, dried fruits with raisins, red wine grapes and some confectionery. Pleasant and round. 7,9:On the palate, the attack is fruity and estery with overripe tropical fruits like pineapple, banana, some citrus.Red wine notes are pairing very well, glue is not too strong.The wood is roasted and spicy, smoky with pepper, ginger, dark chocolate and confectionery. But it is quite thin, pretty dry.Some dried fruits come into the play, we might think of tasting some sweet marmelade.... 8:The finish is long, very dry, woody with nuts and quite smoky with red wine and tropical fruit notes, the molasses is vegetal with a flowery whiff.There are some tannins, spices and in the end, a bread note.

Powerful Jamaican with an interesting wine note. On the nose, the esters and the strong Jamaica profile stand out immediately. Overripe fruits lead over to the wine. On the palate, intense, fruity esters again and with the cask strength a warm spiciness. The 17 months Zweigelt comes out well and remains in the finish with a dry woodiness alongside the tropical, overripe fruits. At the original release price, an unbeatable insider tip.

What's going on here? A very very young Hampden/Worthy Park blend, bringing full power fruit or esters. The red wine notes, clearly visible visually, are not noticeable in taste at all, as the ester overshadows everything. If you like young Jamaicans in this range - like me - this is a found bottle, especially at this price. A great mixer or also good neat, alcohol is well integrated.

Intense nose. Already here the strong fully ripe banana. In the taste, this hits even stronger. Wonderful... And for me also a pleasant ester content. Clear purchase recommendation... What a bomb. Great finish.

So, now I'm going to try it too. The price is quite an announcement and a positive surprise at this time. Great! In terms of taste (and smell), it doesn't really appeal to me ... the red wine note and the chocolate bother me. Not that I don't like either, but it's just something that doesn't fit the Jamaican profile for me. But if that doesn't bother you ... Otherwise it's decent for the price and a great beginner's and/or mixing rum. Alcohol tweaks a little according to age, of course

Cask-strength spirits often have the advantage that with a nicely integrated ABV they pump up the body of the spirit like the testosterone needle in the ass of a bodybuilder. And so it is here, although this little Jamaican bastard is surprisingly round and naturally also sweet for its youth due to the wine cask finish. But it brings little complexity and ranks among the many Hampden attempts of independent bottlers...

Nose: Right after pouring, powerful glue notes, fermented fruit, certain tropical notes, banana, lots of esters and also slight woody notes with a wine hint. Mouth: Very powerful start, peppery, tropical (grilled pineapple), lots of fermented fruit, a bit more on the woody, dry side, slight sweetness that increases with sips. Finish: medium length, dry, fruity, slight peppery sharpness. Very round for its age. Lots of flavor and that for a cheap price of about 35 Eur/0.5l. Repurchase recommendation? Yes!

This rum has a very delicious nose, but very thin and soft body on the body. Also the finish is quite short. The red wine barrel brings a sweet and red wine note. The alcohol is integrated well. Amazing price per value 😎

Nice nose of esters/fruits, but with a good dose of wood, spices, roasted aromas and chocolate. On the palate also harmonious with various components that keep a good balance. Slight tendency towards sharp spices and musty tobacco. Only the finish is quick and not really balanced. That's the biggest criticism of this rum.

Brings strong Jamaican funk with lots of esters, overripe banana, and pineapple. The red wine cask adds a dry, slightly tart note but doesn't feel completely harmonious. At about 64% ABV, it's intense but rather thin-bodied and dry in the finish. Interesting, but not quite balanced.

Good release, naturally still very youthful and wild, but also with appealing complexity. Lots of tropical fruits, some wood, challenging structure. Price-performance ratio definitely exceptional by today's standards. Hats off to the Wagemut team, great composition!

Small Herzogenaurach tasting in Flo's cellar: Another rum where the finish overwhelms the rum too much. Here it is notes of red wine that dominate a bit too much. The alcohol is also poorly integrated. You can tell the rum is young.

On the nose I can smell the Jamaica style with all its typical tropical fruit notes. The taste is rather less complex and there is a glue note I was durprised with at the back of if my palate. The finish is very dry and short to medium. Overall this rum is rather ok but not interesting or overwhelming. I will use it to pimp up some cocktails in future.

Read full review ›The aging in the red wine cask takes away some of the sharp edges of the rum at the end and makes it drinkable for beginners in the world of esters without being intrusive. The price is very good for what is offered. Very dry in taste.
