Tasted at Rhum Fest Paris, partial notes.Smells a bit like soap or oat milk, it's weird, not a big fan or shea butter/cocoa... Much better in the mouth, though. A good old farmhouse, without being too old.
Review by Julien Ries
Tasting of Rhum J.M vintage 2014, brut de fût This rum is aged for less than 10 years (9 months and 7 months) in a tropical climate, and bottled brut de fût at 44.2°. Nose: rather intense, it's the compote of exotic fruits that first strikes the nostrils. This fruitiness continues on to gourmet prune juice, which continues on to toasted bread. This brings a great greediness that continues on notes of freshly split vanilla. There's also the spiciness of ginger, with a hint of honey to soften it all. The palate is incredibly smooth, with perfectly integrated alcohol. The attack is on the bitterness of orange marmalade. This could be disturbing. Vanilla and delicate oak soften this first impression on the palate. On the finish, toasted brioche bread coats the palate with great delicacy. The finish is very long, with vanilla still enveloping the palate and toasty notes lingering. Exotic fruits come back to say hello. I can't help drawing a parallel between this rum and Terroir Volcanique from the same distillery. They share many aromatic similarities, but in XXL format for this 2014 vintage. While the Terroir Volcanique fades rather quickly, this 2014 is more concentrated. It's just a shame it has that bitterness that's a little too pronounced.
