A German rum from a UA, that's something new! And those who follow me know: I like new things! Simon's Feinbrennerei has been known for a while, but so far the releases left me cold. 8 years in ex-Pinot-Noir Spessart oak, 3 years ex-cream sherry and another 3 months TDL finish, plus sailed molasses from Tres Hombres, quite a statement. Normally I'm not a fan of too many barrels and finishes, but I quite like this one. Spessart oak and TDL give the rum spice and depth, a slight grape note and generally fruit lie subtly on the tongue (especially in the finish) and somehow there's also a (sherry) sweetness. All well integrated and round, without being intrusive. Nice, round and thus for me a successful bottling, props to the Berlin guys. What could be more fitting than a German rum for the German Rum Festival!

#5311 15.05.2025 Enjoying some samples after coming back from the airport in Hamburg. Put my son on his flight to China for a long holiday with his mom. Listening to some Psy Trance 2025. Nose Wood, light roasted, light herbal, light raisin, light cardamom, light orange. Palate Round, wood, light roasted, light citrus. Spice, light dried fruit, light cherry, medium spicy. Finish Medium long, round, wood, light roasted, light cherry, faint chocolate, medium spicy. Empty glass Cherry, cinnamon, light citrus, light herbal. German Rum Fest 2024 sample.

I've known Simon distills since the Village'23 in Nuremberg and he always makes some really cool stuff. The fact that RumClub is now making a bottling from him was new to me. You can drink it, but I've honestly had better stuff from him in my glass.

13th GRF - Night tasting The RumDepot - Dirk - is doing something completely new. He's actually bottling a German rum for once. I think that's really good. Let's see what it can do... Nose: initially spicy, fruity and slightly cherry-woody. Pleasant appeal without biting or stinging. Vanilla and sweet-tart fruits are the first to find their way in. Green apple, passion fruit, plus citrus, not quite orange, not quite lemon, perhaps citrus marmalade. Behind it, a somewhat artificial cherry yoghurt aroma. I smell the spice in the direction of nutmeg and slightly spicy ginger with cinnamon. A hint of chamomile tea at the back. Not bad at all, a little too artificial. 7,9 Palate: much spicier than the nose but still fruity. First impression is of Calvados or white wine with lime. Slightly sour-salty, almost metallic. Then vanilla with mild caraway and defused ginger, followed by apple and grape. At the back again this artificial cherry yoghurt aroma, which was also to be found in the nose. Overall a little flat and short on the finish, but still not a bad rum. 7,7

Very fruity on the nose, a bit of wood and spices. On the palate, more notes join like wine, Calvados and a metallic note that is not disturbing. On the contrary, I like it.

The Rumclub ventures with the new Edition 48 to the German Rum Festival for the first time into domestic territory and gives the often mildly mocked German rum a chance in the spotlight with this single cask from Feinbrennerei Simons. Initially very reserved on the nose, the first sip on the palate is very pleasing. Easy to drink, what is mainly missing here is length, the finish doesn't leave much with me. The last small sips of my bottled sample are mostly spicy.

Day trip Dortmund August 2025. Shop Weinhaus H. Hilgering. Also tasted on site. I like this rum. It's very spicy, definitely lots of cinnamon, vanilla on the nose and pepper on the palate, also some wood.

With this quite pleasant but also rather shy smell, I wouldn't have thought that this rum would develop such substance in the mouth. It also has an appealing maturity and is consistent. For me personally, it's a bit too sweet and the slightly artificial-perfumed mouthfeel in the aftertaste is not my thing, but overall it's a good rum.

A rum from Simon's, how nice! I once got to accompany Flo for a whole day in the distillery during the distillation process. I find this bottling not quite as interesting as the various types we got to try on site. You could say 'Simon’s can do better.' Spicy nose with cinnamon, plus some citrus fruits, but quite restrained. On the palate also rather on the spicy side, slightly salty as well. In the finish citrus with apple, but everything a bit too short.

I've already tried quite a bit from Simon and even got to accompany the distillation on site. Great guy, great distillery and almost a real Single Estate... almost. Even the wood of his barrels partly comes from his forest. This is now the first bottling that really disappoints me. It lacks character and depth here. Pleasant to drink, somewhat fruity, some wood and the alcohol is well integrated, but that's all. His own bottlings are clearly better.

I admit I'm a bit skeptical about rum from Germany, but this is clearly not a fruit brandy, but rum on the nose. Only in taste does the homeland come through with apple and grape reminiscent of wine, but it remains rum feeling. The finish is also fruity. A positive surprise from Germany.

At first, little on the nose, a bit of alcohol, then very hidden rummy wood spice, becomes clearer later, alcohol dissipates; On the tongue, a direct strong and spicy start, slightly sweet, lots to discover, can’t describe it, would attribute it to the different casks, little but not unpleasant sharpness, rather short finish / Addition: if it stays longer in the glass, it gets much better, so let it breathe a bit.

This is a weirdo. It passes on falling in The Obstler Trap but a weird metallic calvados is not really what I want to substitute my rum evening with. I don't mind this but I am not a fan of this type of distillate
