Nose Quite toasty on the nose, lots of toasted bread, a bit of caramel. Plenty of coconut; coconut milk and cream. There's a slight fruitiness underneath; like an overly sweet ripe mango. A bit of nutmeg and obvious cinnamon. Caramelized white chocolate. A little maraschino cherry. Slightly acetone-like, maybe a chemical scent. Vanilla bean custard and some banana. Maybe a hint of tahini. Good. 84 Palate On the palate, more than expected, a high body. Medium-high sweetness. Almost chewy. Slightly leafy, mentholated, fresh minty undertones but still the toasty side leads; toasted bread, toasted coconut chips, and some coconut milk. Again caramelized white chocolate and tahini. Toasted bread is less obvious than on the nose. Red apple peel, maraschino cherries again. Mango more in the background. Slight tannic notes; old wood. Cinnamon still obvious. Nutmeg with menthol adds freshness. Feels diluted but not a big problem. More complex than the nose, good! 85 Finish Coconut milk is most noticeable here. The rum suddenly goes neat and calms down a bit. Medium intensity. Spicy notes open up; some black pepper added to nutmeg and cinnamon. Custard here. A balancing slight bitter end. Tobacco! Tannins dry the mouth a bit here. Banana leaf. Dry red plum. Maybe a slight curry in the far background. Slight warming. Good. 84 Overall impression If you don't have too high expectations, this is a bottling that can be said to be very satisfying. It especially shows its maturity with a soft but distinct oak influence. There is definitely some dynamism between the nose, palate, and finish; the exact same picture doesn't stay in front of us in all three, small changes keep the drinker engaged. If I were to make a cheeky guess, I would say it hasn't been overly diluted (the difference between barrel strength and 46% might not be that big). Enjoyable! 85 Total: 84.5 [85] Price-performance: Good, medium-good. Would I buy again?: I'm happy I got it, it was good to try but for buying a whole bottle I would need easier access.

Cadenhead’s Spanish 2007 17Y – 46% From the Green Label range, here’s a rum from an uncommon origin: Spain, with no additional information about the distillery. Distilled in 2007 and bottled at 46%. A gourmand nose of banana, spicy palate, and warming finish. It drinks easily, but doesn’t revolutionize anything. Overall, a rather average selection for this event. You can clearly tell that the rum crowd wasn’t their priority this year…
