Sipped neat with a little air, this Belize opens on coconut, dark chocolate, vanilla and toffee, with oak and baking spice underneath. At 66.1% the heat needs time, and most find it well tucked in for the strength. It leans sweet and a touch dark; a few tasters wanted more complexity from 15 years. A confident debut bottling that many rate a strong Belize.

Debut of Wolfgang Klotz as an independent bottler. A typical Belize? It arrives with a lot of steam, at least on the nose, and needs time to catch its breath. At first, it is strongly reminiscent of the almost classic FRC from 2006, with typical coconut, vanilla and oak, plus more and more sweet fruit notes. Surprisingly sweet on the palate, the brute strength is definitely there but is well balanced by the sweetness and makes this rum extremely drinkable.

Number 2 from Klotz, actually quite okay, but I find it a bit too sweet. Dark chocolate is recognizable, toffee too, but you can also detect coconut. It's quite solid, nothing more.

8,5:On the nose, the first impression we get is very toasted and fruity with coconut, mango and dried apricots, as a wood is roasted with toffee, pastry and nuts, spicy with vanilla, cinammon. On aeration, a molasses brings tobacco, the roastedness burnt sugar and there is a variety of fruits like raisins, dates and citrus. 8,5:On the palate, the attack is again toasted and fruity, balanced, with ex bourbon cask ageing like coconut, dried fruits, roasted wood with biscuits and toffee, as the molasses is vegetal with tobacco.Resting helps with releasing wood notes like burnt sugar and dark chocolate, spices like cinnamon, vanilla and pepper, fruits like mango, peaches and citrus, in the end comes a menthol. 8,4:The finish is long and dry, woody&fruity with notes from palate, as the burnt sugar is caramelized, some marzipan comes in, when we think we have tasted all.

Reminds me immediately of the Rumclub Belize from the same year. Also here on the nose lots of spices, especially baking spices. Some wine, plum, dark chocolate, slightly artificial, some coconut, relatively sweet. On the palate, much of what the nose promised can be found again. I find the ABV well integrated.

Clearly a Belize with lots of chocolate, vanilla, toffee, coconut, oak wood and a smoky component (tobacco). The overall picture is right (maybe a bit woody), only the rum seems a bit weaker, which could be due to oxidation that has not yet occurred. Slightly less intense than my reference (RumClub Ed. 41), but the basic data are suspiciously similar.

First of all, I'm not really a fan of bottlings from Belize. But I was pleasantly surprised here. Normally, some Belize were just too alcoholic for me, which was not the case here. Blindly, I would probably have categorized this bottling as Barbados/Foursquare. Compliments to Wolfgang, I will have to try one or two Belize after all, because of you. The alcohol is very well integrated here.

Slightly dirty on the finish, but also quite bourbon-like. Black Tellicherry pepper, on the nose lots of pastries and toffee. Black tea and chocolate. On the palate acidity, which I don't like so much. Otherwise tiptop.

Classic Belize profile with plenty of vanilla sugar, toffee, coconut, oak wood and spices - initially the aroma spectrum is very round, but on the palate and in the finish it becomes increasingly spicy-bitter. The high alcohol content probably also plays a role here. Overall a coherent release, which in my opinion only lacks a bit of final refinement.

Most single casks at cask strength from Belize that I've tried so far were solid to quite good. With this release, Wolfgang has picked one of the best Belize I've had so far. I still have to calmly pit it against the current champion, FRC Kürgen Wiese.

Upon opening, immediately strong nail polish / medical alcohol scent. Let's leave it for 15 minutes. Now tropical fruits, vanilla, and chocolate come through. In the mouth, first sweet then intensely spicy. The aftertaste with black pepper and slight bitterness. Alcohol is well integrated but could be rounder. All in all a nice Belize, but RC and RA are ahead for me.

Very good nose. Spicy, coconut, woody, caramel. Strong but balanced. On the palate already somewhat rough. A few drops of water help. Very good and very strong sipper. Good value for money.

As a Belize lover, I was a little disappointed here. The classic ramen aroma and flavor is a good fit. But at 15 years and 66.1% there should be much more complexity of aromas and much more in the finish. OK as a first bottling but still plenty of room for improvement. There has to be more to come in terms of flavors. Unfortunately a little too weak for me. Despite all the criticism, this is very enjoyable.

Very tasty Belize, although no revelation in terms of complexity. The 2007 Spirit Gallery brings more here. Liquid cookie with milk chocolate pieces, coconut chips and lots of toffee and caramel. Alcohol is well integrated and very pleasant, but the finish is really very short.

At first on the nose, strong dominance of alcohol. After 20-30 minutes, coconut, vanilla, spices and tropical fruits appear. These aromas also dominate on the palate and close with a sweet/woody finish. Alcohol is well integrated for its over 66%, but borderline.

The 2008 vintage from Travellers has been strong so far. Like the bottling from Rumclub, a great bottling. In direct comparison, the RC was perhaps slightly better balanced. But for me there are no big differences. Except for the price. The RC just wins in a direct comparison, with otherwise similar quality.

Beautiful nose. You can already sense its pithiness. Really tasty on the palate. Definitely a rum with edges without being overpowering. Stays nice and long. Great work! A great Belizean. :-)

So far I only had the Rumclub Belize from the same vintage in the glass, this one is in my opinion a bit more interesting. Nice sweet, round aromas wonderfully embedded in strong hints of wood and spices without being intrusive. Slight notes of marzipan on the finish, but that could also just be the interplay of influences mentioned before. The high ABV is really well integrated, a great bottling from Wolfgang Klotz - if not even his first, I have to check again.

A Belize rum with a good punch. From nose to finish on the dark side of rum. Quite sweet with lots of spice, wood and roasted notes, also peppery on the palate. Alcohol is well integrated. For me a bit too dark and one-dimensional, the FRC impressed me more back then.

Wolfgang Klotz Spirits Belize Travellers 2008 15y 66.1% 15 years tropical, sud? 66% is noticeable here and needs time to open up more, then vanilla, coconut, sweet pastry, wood, milk chocolate, latte come through, but I don't get much fruit here. Overall it's a bit less pronounced, muted than I'd like, and the alcohol bite remains a bit. On the palate, I think it catches up nicely, the alcohol sharpness is noticeable but the flavors are beautifully gentle, expressive and sweet with vanilla, coconut, more pronounced wood and sweet spices. Finish is rather medium and pleasant. I compare it here with the great Belize from RumClub (RX18053 - same vintage, same age, same strength), which I drank and which is just awesome. Wolfgang loses out here for me, not by much, but RumClub's bottling is simply ahead. That doesn't mean WK's bottling is bad, on the contrary, a great start for WK into the world of rums, I would definitely recommend it not only to Belize lovers.
