Most tasters land on "a good, typical Caroni" — tar, rubber and diesel up front, with dried fruit, a little menthol and chocolate underneath. The main gripe: at 55% a couple found it toned down and less oily than the big 2000 bottlings, one calling it a lightweight. Give it 30-40 minutes and it opens into something deep and savoury.

A rum that has gained enormously from oxidation. On opening, the nose was closed and pungent, the palate rather aggressive. A superb nose balanced between notes of machine shop, fruit, wood and pastry. The palate, though initially a little spicy and acidic, immediately develops deep, complex aromas. Fruits, yellow fruits and tropical fruits are well present. On the finish, pastry notes emerge along with a previously discreet smoky woodiness. An incredibly long finish. A very fine evolution for this rum, which I would have rated rather poorly on opening. Will it evolve further? Tasted again in a Caroni tasting with even more oxidation (almost empty bottle), it seems a little less good.

It’s a light weight for a Caroni issued by Velier (110 proof) and to me that means it is lacking a bit from what I hoped. Real herbal and vegetal notes on the nose and palate followed soon after by more typical tar and rubber elements. It’s a dry and savoury mouth and lacks the intensity and oiliness that I was looking for. Medium length finish and opens up a bit with time but lacks the wow factor that I and many others want with a Caroni

Good Caroni with the typical profile you expect. Dirty with diesel, rubber, and woody notes but also some menthol in the finish. Still not a Caroni that stands out from the crowd, but also stands out among the 2000s. Good and pleasing (almost identical to the EU bottling)

Great Caroni, has everything you imagine in a tasty Caroni. Tar, lacquer, and rubber are noticeable, plus it's still a bit woody, but definitely a really delicious rum. Cheers

Caroni 2000 US bottling almost freshly opened - a very nice find at Pusser‘s in Munich. Lacking the side-by-side versus the EU edition, from memory this is on par. As for the EU bottling, this is a very nice expression of the 2000 vintage with high intensity, dirt and some dried fruits. Works very well at the reduced ABV imo.

21.02.2020 A small private event where we borrowed the basement bar area for a private tasting and also had a go at their food. Notes. Medium dark colour. Nose Wood, roasted, leather, fruits, cherry, tar, light rubber. Palate Oily, balanced, complex, wood, roasted, tar, leather, dried fruit, medium dry, light rubber. Finishvery long, dry, wood, tannins, raisin, light caramel.

A rather dry and oily Caroni with vegetal notes, wood and a little fruit. I’m very happy to have tasted this one although it was a little different from the other Caronis that I have sampled so far.

Got this sample from Benjamin "Tamosi". Nose: thick syropy red fruits. Some ash/tar/rubber. Not unlike modern TDL. Very nice smell. Enjoyed it for a few minutes till I sipped it. Taste: It kicks in quite heavily. Again red fruits, hot and biting. Chemical. A weird funk. Bitter(s). Eucalyptus. Less tarry than expected. Lots of stuff going on (see all tasting notes I clicked). It's a balanced beast. The bitterness lingers. Very good. 90points easily.

Basically a good Caroni. The typical dirty notes of rubber etc. are present. A good representative from the 2000 vintage. Personally, I would prefer the 100th Anniversary at the appropriate price here.

A nice representative of the 2000s Caronis. Dirty aromas (tar and rubber) dominate from nose to finish. Alongside various fruits, some menthol and little sweetness. On the palate, despite the 55%, very mild; alcohol classily integrated.

Typical 2000 - lots of tar, rubber, and petrol (or diesel?). Lacquer, plenty of camphor. Caramel, few dried fruits. Good strength without overwhelming. Spicy, woody, and very oily on the palate. Great finish! Very warming and wonderful spices. Archetypal Caroni. Certainly not top tier, but plenty of rubber and petrol.

I gave him an easy 40 minutes. He also needed that. Intense nose, spicy, toasty and fruity at the same time. Foremost sulfured and a fine menthol note. A sweetness of ripe papaya and honey and just behind that something dusty, smoky from old wood and tobacco. I likeIt's intense and delicious on the palate again. Sweet, salty and bitter at the same time. Menthol or mint I also have here and something metallic it seems. Shortly something singed plastic comes along. Something almond at the end.Menthol and some wood itself in the finish.A good Caroni.

... Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad, producing at its peak a rum that was added in a 1:10 ratio to naval blends. It was too strong and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. The distillery ended production and was closed in 2000. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who liked the rum precisely for its special taste. And interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of rums "you need to try before you die." I recommend it, Caroni is truly a unique rum.

An exceptional rum, not the usual palate used to drinking Caroni but from the opening, a smell that transports you and reminds you of long winter Sundays. The nose is tarry, clean petroleum typical of Trinidad and a strong mix between caramel and a hint of vanilla. On the palate, the caramel reveals itself more prominently surrounded by an oily industrial fat used to run machines from the 1920s. A delight and a journey!
