Here's the twist: this 1988 Caroni doesn't taste much like Caroni. At 43% it's diluted soft and round — caramel, toffee, brown sugar, coconut and toasted oak, with only a whisper of the tar and rubber the distillery is famous for. Several tasters said the nose reads closer to a Foursquare than a Trinidad rum. Very easy-drinking, but light on the dirty edge people chase here.

Epic Velier Caroni Tasting 2023: Lags somewhat behind the other releases, partly due to the dilution and partly due to the blended profile, which comes across as somewhat colorless overall with its light notes due to the reduction to drinking strength. Typical LTR sweetness meets very subtle HTR notes. Doesn't pick me up enough in direct comparison.

#4219 19.08.2023 we had our yearly meeting among old friends. When we do this once a year its without partners, cellphones and other gadgets. Just some nice rums, a piece of paper and a pen and most fun of all, a blind tasting. The theme of 2023 was Caroni and we had a great time and spend no less then 10 hours talking and tasting. This one was not my favourite it was not that well balanced. Lightly fruity with a leather note. Draws really nice curtains in the glass and the empty glass has some nougat and very light chocolate.

An extremely light Caroni that has surely lost much of its potential with its reduced degree. The nose is more reminiscent of a Foursquare than a Trinidad rum: caramel, toffee, brown sugar, dried fruit, coconut, hazelnut, roasted wood, nutmeg, vanilla and cinnamon trick the nostrils with great sweetness. There's a little more terpenic tar after aeration, but that's where it ends. A puzzling profile, not to say a little disappointing. The attack on the palate confirms the impression of the nose and the overall bad reputation of this cuvée: apart from a hint of tar and rubber on the attack, we find a very smooth, easy-drinking rum on caramel, chocolate, toasted oak, sweet spices, leather, dried fruit and coconut. The alcohol is drowned in the sweetness of this atypical profile for the house. The finish, very smooth and of decent length, has no distinguishing aromas: there are caramelized, praline and chocolate notes to go with the sweet spices, oak, dried fruit and coconut. This light, soft Caroni like a soft caramel is surprising, but also a little disappointing: it's hard not to draw parallels with Foursquare, but with a catchier name and a more confusing price tag.

A good nose, but not typically Caroni. The dirty notes then come through in the taste. However, very diluted. Outstanding sipper, but is this the aim of a Caroni

Rum tasted at the GRF in Berlin in 2026. A light nose where you feel the Caroni flavors but softened and you have to look for them instead of them imposing themselves on us. But apart from that, a very nice nose where fruits and mechanical workshop are balanced. On the palate, unfortunately, the diluted side is much more present and a strong woody bitterness dominates, leaving little room for the fruits. The finish is medium long, still on the woody bitterness.

A Caroni in the purest BTR spirit, with plenty of round aromas on both nose and palate. Unfortunately, this bottling lacks the complexity, aromatic concentration and depth to reach the level of benchmark Caronis for this profile. A very good rum, but nothing extraordinary for this distillery.

... Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad, producing rum at the height of its fame, which was added in a ratio of 1:10 to naval blends. It was too strong and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. In 2000 the distillery ended production and was closed. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who liked the rum precisely for its special taste. And interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of rums "you need to try before you die." I recommend it, Caroni is really a unique rum.
