South Pacific Planteray Fiji Pot Still Foundation 2001
The crowd landed firmly in the "very good" camp, even if a few say it doesn't top the best of the 2001 Fiji vintage. Pipe tobacco leads the nose, trailed by caramelised banana, ripe pineapple and that unmistakable Fiji glue-and-rubber DNA. The palate turns darker — menthol, black cherry, cassis, strong unsweetened coffee — before a bright, minty finish. At 51% the proof sits just right.

#4934 Whisky Live in Paris 27.09.2024-30.09.2024. Another great event meeting a lot of RumX new and old friends. This year three weren't as many new releases as in 2023, but I still had a great time. Nose Light wood, faint smoke, fruity, light ester, spice, light banana, faint floral. Palate Round, light, light wood, faint roasted, fruity, light ester, medium dry, faint cherry, faint rubber, faint leather, light spicy. Finish Medium long, round, fruity, light cherry, banana, faint smoke, faint rubber, light spicy.

Very good Fiji from 2001, looking forward to the cross-tasting with other representatives of the vintage.

Absolutely positive surprise! Pipe tobacco, caramelized banana, ripe pineapple, blackcurrant, glue, varnish, rubber and burnt leather on the nose. Then again menthol, tobacco, sour cherry, cassis, strong unsweetened coffee, citrus fruits like bergamot, like a good Earl Grey tea and some of the typical Fiji rubber DNA and again menthol and blackcurrant/cassis, then again tobacco, coffee and cherry. The finish is unusually long. The alcohol content is extremely well chosen and highlights all the flavors without being too thin. I am extremely impressed by this rather unusual 2001 Fiji Vintage profile, which in part reminds me more of 95 EMB Clarendon Jamaica rums.

A varied and pleasant Fijian rum in every respect. The nose offers a beautiful range of aromas: sometimes fruity (banana, pineapple), sometimes pastry-like (toffee, butter), both spicy, woody, and medicinal, this bottling is generous, intense, and beautifully rounded. The tobacco notes in the background enhance the profile. An eye-catching and diverse nose. On the palate, the profile is smooth but retains its aromatic intensity. The buttery, floral, medicinal and esterized side comes to the fore, followed by more spicy, empyreumatic (toasted, smoky) notes that emerge alongside tropical fruits. The whole is fairly consistent and very pleasant on the palate. The alcohol is well integrated. The finish is slightly below expectations, particularly in terms of length. Tobacco, leather, toasted wood, and spices give it a rather dark tone. Medicinal notes arrive on camphor and glue, while toffee, citrus, and tropical fruits share the rest of the finish. A pleasant, accessible, and eclectic rum, but it lacks something to take it to the next level in the Fiji 2001 register.

Really good, typical Fiji rum. Unfortunately, this bottling cannot quite keep up with the best of the outstanding 2001 vintage.

Somewhat crazy 2001 Fiji - surprising pipe tobacco notes on the nose. Fruity and jammy on the finish. Delicious, but not at the level of the top class of the vintage.
Review by Palo - V Poháriku
Interesting "wild" Fiji pot still. The nose brought me a mix of anise, tobacco, glue, and smoky notes, layered with fruity hints like banana and sour currants. On the palate, a woody base, touches of leather, and a blend of tropical fruits, including guava and mango. The finish is refreshingly bright, leaning towards a subtle minty touch that adds a surprising freshness to the end. Overall, it’s a cool expression with a bold profile and lively, almost invigorating finish.

Vintage 2001. I rate it 8.5 out of 10, an excellent rum that ranks high even among my more than 1,300 reviews.
