Chalong Bay continues its Lunar Series with a Thai rum aged in ex-Jamaican rum casks, and I have to say the combo is quite appealing. The nose has the medicinal and fruity side of Jamaica (solvents, banana, pineapple) but also features a nice touch of exoticism from Southeast Asia (lime, vegetal and spicy notes). It’s a soft, round, and fragrant nose. On the palate, the profile is more straightforward, a bit less elaborate than the nose suggested. You find a more classic aromatic bouquet with young wood, spices, some toasted notes, sweetness from sugarcane and candied fruits, but also citrus and exotic fruits as always. The Jamaican imprint is less pronounced but still adds complexity to the drink. It’s a round profile like you find in Thai rums, but slightly boosted by Caribbean funk. The alcohol is well integrated here. The finish is of decent length and is light and round. It brings nice mineral and floral touches at the end. You get that slightly woody, spicy, and vanilla side with some fruits and sugarcane. A friendly bottle that serves as a good compromise between exoticism and accessibility.
