Most tasters land on "good, not amazing" — a rounder, more balanced Mhoba than the wilder ones. Expect the signature glue and wood-lacquer esters, mashed banana, leather and roasted oak, with vanilla and caramel from the bourbon cask. At 60.9% the heat shows; a couple felt it doesn't fully tame its own power. Fun and different, but a step below the distillery's best.

Tasting the Mhoba New Vibrations: All three have those terrific Mhoba wood varnish ester notes. Imbasha: A delicious rum, but in a direct comparison with Mhoba it falls very far short. No complexity, bitter-woody, seems watered down. 76 pts. Kigelia: more complex in the west, more fruity and better balanced. 84 pts. Ingwe: Oh yes! that's the winner! great piece! Very fruity, with a lot of wood influence and wood varnish. Complex, every sip sends you on a journey of discovery. 90 pts. the Ingwe should be included in a best-of-Mhoba tasting. It will be a feast

Today I compared the two Mhoba Kigelia and Imbasha against each other. Thanks to Rod for the split. As I've had the Mhoba Ingwe and the Flag South Africa in my glass recently, I'm sorry to say that the two tasted today couldn't reach the same level. For me personally, the Imbasha is slightly ahead.

9,2:On the nose, a great first impression with esters, glue, banana and citrus, very fresh and grassy, quickly in cooperation with roasted wood notes, so we notice a delightful apple pie, vanilla and caramel, nuts.👌 On aeration, pastry, fruitcake notes are really intense and very tempting, with an additon of pineapple and herbaceous sugar cane honey. 9:On the palate, the attack is a bit medicinal with esters, buttery woody and fruity notes.Our tasting buds are attacked with banana, roasted wood notes, spicy and salty, quickly delicious apple pie arrives, pastry/fruitcake, as on the nose, with vanilla and nuts, cocoa, leather.After resting the rum, citrus and other green fruits join, the sugarcane is flowery, herbaceous, grassy, the fruits get more fermented tones, with pineapple, cream toffee and licorice start to play for band in the end. 9:The finish is long, dry, with sugarcane honey and notes from the palate, as an addition a crunchy bread notes arises very, very late after the rum has gone down, brings a smoky touch... Solid Mhoba. I quite like the Mhoba profile, but find it hard to name any major differences. Good glue, fruity like banana, lots of leather and bourbon. Very drinkable in my opinion.

#4868 Whisky Live in Paris 27.09.2024-30.09.2024. Another great event meeting a lot of RumX new and old friends. This year three weren't as many new releases as in 2023, but I still had a great time. Nose Fresh, medium intense, fruity, light grass, faint caramel, faint leather, faint chocolate, light ester, light citrus. Palate Round, balanced, medium intense, fruity, light banana, medium dry, medium spicy, naturally sweet, light vegetal, faint floral, faint leather. Finish Medium to long, warm, faint wood, faint roasted, light chocolate, medium dry, faint caramel. Not the best of releases, but still drinkable and I think most people can actually enjoy this one.

I quite like this Mhoba. Intense ester aroma on the nose, with a hint of glue and plastic. There's also plenty of ester on the palate, plus it's woody, roasty, intense and dry.

A Mhoba that's frank, clear-cut and more incisive than other recent vintages. The nose shows intense phenolic baggage on esters, plastic and rubber, a bestial side on leather, but also a beautiful basket of ripe fruit (banana, pineapple) and citrus. There are also spices and sweet notes, more in the background. A rather intense nose, but well brought out. The attack on the palate is much more lively, astringent and dry than expected. Spicy, roasted, woody and salty flavors lift the profile. Despite the ripe tropical fruit, butter, bourbon and caramel, the profile remains boorish and less complex than it could have been. The alcohol is quite noticeable and unbalances the aromatic structure. The finish is of medium length, with exotic fruit and the warmth of alcohol. There's wood, spice and roastiness, but also more metallic, medicinal notes and a hint of sugarcane. The profile isn't bad, but it's sorely lacking in precision in the face of the firepower it exudes. A classic Mhoba that doesn't master its strength.

"Small" Mhoba Cross-Tasting 2025: Delicious bottling, with some ester and glue notes (and towards that brown Patex). Alcohol very well integrated. Overall not outstanding but good.

Relatively discreet nose on this rum. First vanilla and caramelized before some fruity and ester notes appear. It's much more expressive on the palate where I'm very surprised by the intensity at first, then by a powerful taste of mashed banana that lingers in the mouth for a long time. Spicy, dry, warm, cocoa-like. Nice influence of the cask that brings a lot of roundness to this very powerful rum. Jamaican-style esters. Amazing.

Notes from Whisky Live Paris 2024 - to be reviewed and explored further. Ultra-round and perhaps a little too round for me. It's very pleasant, a bit of a break from the Mhoba codes, I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing :) I liked the cane, which is still present, and the lemony aspect that stands out.

The nose shows the characteristic esters of South Africa and this distillery, but less smoky than usual. It displays accents of leather, heady flowers, in a heavy and intoxicating dimension. If there are green banana scents, the fermented and “milky” side is very present and can be disconcerting. There is a strong ethylic power, softened by honey notes. If the mouth has a sharp and burning attack, it’s a very round rum that surprises, although it has no added sugar. It is oily on the tongue, with a mocha sweetness, roasted smoke and leather. The aftertaste is on a pastry and buttery momentum. The finish is moderately long, on creamy honey, with lots of softness and roundness. The empty glass still shows these powerful flowers, like narcissus. Disarming but a curiosity to discover, easier to access than other Mobhas more wild and animal on the smoke. I give it 78/100.

This Mhoba Kigelia rum is an excellent representative of the brand. On the nose, fatty, buttery esters and caramel and vanilla notes are present right from the start. The palate is lively, intense, woody and round. The finish, long, is dominated by the wood with caramel notes.

On the nose glue, esters and blackcurrant. On the palate notes of burnt caramel come to the fore, paired with wood and spice notes. Clearly noticeable but well integrated alcohol. Overall very complex and interesting. For me one of the best rums of my rum journey so far.

On the nose I get intense overripe banana, barrel and plastic notes, probably also intensified because of my new Gargano x Neisson glass I got back from Paris :) Not too complex but fun and different from the rums I had before. Finish is quite dry, alcoholic and powdery with some traces of honey coming through.
