21.10.2022 Going through samples at home. Notes Medium to dark in colour. Nose Wood, tannins, light chocolate, faint caramel, faint tar, faint rubber, light floral, light cherry. Palate Oily, wood, tannins,, light cherry, faint rubber, faint tar, light, light caramel, faint chocolate. Finish Short to medium, wood, light rubber, faint tar, dried fruit, spice.

Crosstasting 1997 Caronis from continental storage: crisp HTR profile with surprising fieriness. The profile has a pleasant breadth of aromas, covers the entire spectrum of the long matured HTR world and pleases with accessible aromas, but lacks unique characteristics.

Nothing to write home about for me as far as Caroni goes. Light dirty, rubber, light mentol, light leather, tropical fruits, I also get light flowers. The taste is woody, spices, mainly peppery, little alcoholic, but also sweet-ish notes of tropical fruits and vanilla appear.

No closed distillery is chased harder than Caroni. The Trinidad distillery shut down around 2002 and not a drop has been made since, but its heavy, oily, almost diesel-like rum became a collector obsession, carried to the world by Velier. Every bottle now comes from a finite, shrinking stock, which is exactly why the prices keep climbing.
