Velier Papalin Jamaica High Ester 5 Years Old 2019
Anyone curious about Jamaican esters but nervous about the funk should start here. It's a Worthy Park pot-still bottled at a friendly 47%, full of fresh pineapple, green banana and a light solvent note, with a touch of wood on the finish. Several tasters call it the ideal way to introduce non-believers to the style. A few wish the overripe fruit hit harder.
- Fruity and funky
- Very accessible
- Creamy 47% mouthfeel

How does Velier Papalin Jamaica High Ester 5 Years Old 2019 taste?
Aggregated from 71 community reviews.
Fresh, easy-going Jamaican ester starter Most see it as an easy, balanced entry into Jamaican esters — fruity and funky without going heavy. The common gripe: reduction softens it, and fans of the higher-ABV version prefer that one.

Tasted during my visit to the Maison du Whisky popup store in February: I love Papalin and wasn't disappointed by this one, a reduced version with non-existent alcohol. You get pleasure from a little asters, large fruits and butter. Super gourmand. At 50€, it's unbeatable! Edit: regouted to LMDW. Velier - Papalin 5 years "high ester" reduced to 47% - Jamaica. Pineapple, honey, butter, small spices, controlled esters and very well-integrated alcohol. At €50, the ideal bottle to put on the table with friends!

#4863 Whisky Live in Paris 27.09.2024-30.09.2024. Another great event meeting a lot of RumX new and old friends. This year three weren't as many new releases as in 2023, but I still had a great time. Nose Light, medium ester, fruity, overripe, faint floral, light pineapple, light banana, fresh. Palate Light, faint wood, medium ester, fruity, light citrus, banana, faint nutts, faint floral. Finish Medium long, light, naturally sweet, light ester, fruits, light citrus, faint wood. A pretty good blend though I prefer the one with slightly higher ABV.

Very nice Jamaican blend. Intense and funky on the nose as well as on the palate. Tropical fruits and cookie dough are dominating. The relatively young age brings a vibrant rum to the table yet the tropical maturation clearly shows, providing a balanced profile between age and playfulness. In contrast to the Hapden/WP Papalin bottling, here I see the upper hand clearly with the higher ABV bottling. Dilution clearly reduced intensity and funk particularly on the nose.

The nose is light on esters, with all the Jamaican DNA but with a lot of freshness. It's not the very ripe, almost rotten fruit you sometimes find. It smells of fresh pineapple, green banana. There's a little solvent, but nothing heavy and ponderous. It's very fruity, with green olives in brine on the second nose. The 47° alcohol makes for an easy entry into the mouth. The palate follows that of the aromas, with a very fresh, fruity side and notes of brine. Once again, it's light and fresh. We've come to the conclusion that this is the perfect rum for discovering Jamaican esters, or for sharing with friends. Not really the rum for philosophical contemplation while remaking the world. It's a populist rum, not an aristocratic one (I don't know how to get out of this if you ask me... ). The finish is quite long, but reasonable, on fruit. Not the heady stuff. I quite liked it and it's not exorbitantly priced.

For a high ester I found it very accessible, probably because of the reduction. It's quite funky, and there's a good balance in the flavors, the fruity, solvent, brine mix working well. I find that the finish fades a little too quickly.

Absolut stabiler high Ester Hampden Einstiegs rum.
