Velier Chelo Vieux Sajous (LMDW) 2019
Grassy, herbal and earthy with mango, guava and a buttery, pastry note that keeps showing up in reviews. Five years in Hampden and other casks rounds off the raw clairin edge, adding light wood and honey. Palate runs dry, spicy and oily with an astringent kick, then a bit of sweetness on the finish. Fresh, mineral, unmistakably Haitian.

Aged Haitian clairin, grassy and complex Widely liked as one of the best in this aged Sajous run. Most find the 2019 the roundest and most balanced yet, with a slight astringent edge some notice but few mind.

#4882 Whisky Live in Paris 27.09.2024-30.09.2024. Another great event meeting a lot of RumX new and old friends. This year three weren't as many new releases as in 2023, but I still had a great time. Nose Fresh, fruity, faint wood, faint tannins, light varnish, light earthy, light floral, light sugarcane, cinnamon. Palate Balanced, fresh, light wood, spice, cinnamon, light floral, light herbal, medium spicy, faint ginger, sugarcane, oily, fruits. Finish Medium long, medium spicy, oily, fresh, faint floral, faint varnish, faint tannins, light wood, fruits. Pretty well balanced release and I look forward to seeing the price in the shops. It is usually sold out pretty fast, so if you need one catch it from the start.

I hadn't really looked into or informed myself about this one before. Now, in hindsight, I've heard that this supposedly has a whisky finish (?). If that's true, luckily you can't taste it. Solid bottling that I liked, but I don't need a bottle of it.

I really like the Clairin rums! Even unaged ones are excellent, there's a lot to discover here. Let's see how the series with the nice black and white labels performs and if it meets my expectations. 2017: I wouldn't have given this bottling five years. The alcohol could be better integrated, little cask influence, which I actually find negative here. Generally very vegetal with olives and herbs. Otherwise, the usual (light) fruity. 76 points. 2018: This one is already "heavier," darker fruitier and spicier. Clearer cask influence. Warm, fruity, and full-bodied on the palate. Alcohol also not optimally integrated here. 80 points. 2019: Seems to perfectly combine the first two! I like it very much. A full-bodied basket of fruit with spices, also astringent. This one is a lot of fun! 86 points.

I really like this series of aged Vieux Sajous! The Caroni finish was nice, the 2018 was already better, but I think this 2019 with the tropical whisky finish is one of the best. I was very skeptical, having had no good experiences with single malt aging so far. But in this case, you hardly notice it. On the contrary, a very earthy, mineral rum that can't deny its origin with Cristalline cane sugar! The nose is pleasantly fruity, with light woody notes and a slightly bitter touch. On the palate, light hints of autumn fruits, honey, and plenty of grassy, earthy influences with a long finish. Overall very well-balanced and just authentic.

And another great Haitian rum, even aged, I haven't had that often. The typical vegetal notes are still present. Also, of course, very fresh, floral, and earthy, with herbs also noticeable.

The nose strongly reminds me of young Jamaican rums. Lots of fermented fruits, esters, but also those crazy associations with milk/butter. Because some wood influences are also noticeable, there's a solid complexity. In contrast, on the palate it's rather dry, spicy, and heavy, while the finish brings back a sweetness that rounds it off nicely.

Every year again there is the new 5-year-old Sajous. These are usually always top - just like this one here. On the nose fresh, floral and as usual fruity. On the palate sweetish, fresh and even a bit oily. Almost too casual, unlike the Caroni cask, alcohol perfectly integrated. Great stuff.

A lovely release, again. This time have been used Hampden casks and the influence is really noticeable, there is a funky soul that adds well to the usual aged sajous notes. Beside the funk and vegetal notes, there is a butter-y and pastry side.. Really nice
Review by Leo Krüper
Aged Clairin, which has benefited very well from the few additional years of aging.

Second time I try a rum from Haiti. Nose is fresh, fruity, spicy and slightly woody. It gives tones of milk, cacao and light honey. Palate starts hot and spicy, but alcohol is well integrated. Many nose flavours still there, with an addition of bitterness and a light vanilla touch. Finish is long, with a smoky tone that wasn't there previously, which is also there in the empty glass along with some green olive. This is a very good rum.

Little VSGB Haitian cross tasting. All three clearly share the same dna, while the vintages show quite significant differences. All of them are very intense and water heavy with: 2018 Fruits and pastries with marzipan 2019 much more vegetal and harsher compared to the other two. 2020 vegetal with red berries For me 2018 > 2020 > 2019

Very interesting, but I found the 2018 more interesting even though this 2019 vintage I found more citrusy and fruity. In the glass it’s quite viscous with a nice color but lighter compared to 2018. On the nose it’s very fragrant and powerful, lots of esters with fruit and spices. On the palate it starts quite alcoholic, it needs to breathe. The finish is medium long. I liked it quite a bit, but I prefer the 2018 more. If left to breathe it opens up quite a bit and becomes pretty drinkable.

Short term aging full and long, with a remarkable length. Love it.

The smell is fresh and fruity with pineapple, some sugarcane and a buttery note, even a hint of lacquer in between. On the palate, herbs, wood and honey, slightly oily and overall balanced. The finish brings tannins, some bitterness and an astringent edge. Not a loud Sajous, rather a rounder representative with still enough character to stay interesting in the glass.

Nice sugary measures with a nice freshness. To me, herbal and quite complex. Tastes very good. Medium finish in my opinion. I still have to try it in a mixer. Nice holiday drink for me.

Impressive aromas. Combination of wood & overriped fruits! Nose: Wood, mango, guava, sugarcane juice. Some earthy, herbaks, touch of berries and rhubarb. Palate: rich, bright! Herbals, some flowers, ripe fruits. Enough oak, but almost to much. Sugarcane with honey, roots & spices. Really tasty. Aftertaste: long & grassy. Combo with herbals & overriped fruits, hint of oak. Conclusion: amazing stuff. Be careful with the barrels, 'cuz it almost too much. But it's still fantastic Clairin.

First impression was a little meh... I expected a more intense impact from the Sajous at this ABV. Unmistakably Sugar Cane, some liquorice root and spice, but the five years of aging has taken maybe a little too much of the bite out of it. However with time in the glass, a good swirl and if you make sure to coat your mouth properly, there is a quality dram to be had. Not the most interesting in the series but very well balanced and a point of entry for non Clairin drinkers.

20.5.2025 Havana Brno In the nose you can clearly feel well-aged apple strudel, apples, cinnamon. The scent changes slightly, then I smell juice of overripe fruit. Taste again brutal, it shreds the tongue back and forth, left and right. 5.6.2025 Havana Brno Year 2019 Richer in taste than 2018 Explosion of strength all over the mouth

🥈 2019 – 58.3% Blend of very varied casks (Hampden, Caroni, Benriach, bourbon…) 👉 Rounder, more coherent 👉 Interesting complexity ❗ Still a slight astringency, but better controlled. Better than the 2018
