Velier Hoy Como Ayer 1956
Tasters agree on the nose and split on the palate: an incredibly dense, roasty bouquet of cocoa, coffee and dried figs, then a body several call a touch too sweet for a 68-year-old. Almost black in the glass, with dates, leather and burnt caramel running long into the finish. Give it a couple of hours to open and the fruit — even a floral edge — comes through.

How does Velier Hoy Como Ayer 1956 taste?
Summarized by AI from community reviews.
Dense, roasty old Cuban, cocoa and dried figs A stunning old Cuban that draws a crowd, though a few find it too sweet and one questions whether the tropical age fully shows. The alcohol, everyone agrees, sits perfectly.

#4898 Whisky Live in Paris 27.09.2024-30.09.2024. Another great event meeting a lot of RumX new and old friends. This year three weren't as many new releases as in 2023, but I still had a great time. Nose Light, sweet, wood, faint smoke, light floral, faint anise, light caramel, faint honey, light coffee, dried fruit. Palate Sweet, light, wood, light roasted, raisin, light floral, light licorice, light caramel, light coffee, faint tobacco. Finish Short to medium, light, sweet, wood, light roasted, dried fruit, light caramel, light coffee, oily, faint nutts. I'm pretty sure this bottle will be released at a price very far from the quality. A sweet pretty well balanced rum but with very little soul. The wood and ABV on the other hand is perfectly integrated.

Tasted at Whisky Live Paris 2024 - quick tasting notes, you've been warned. I'd been waiting for this bottle like a child for a few days, it was ultra hard to find because it was well stashed away from Saturday, fortunately on Mat''s tips I was able to find the keel. Tasting in excellent company with Mike & the immense Alex Bobi, a magical moment! The chocolate, coffee and tobacco aspects made a strong impression on me, and my audio notes also lean towards spices and bitter orange. With a very long finish. Phew, it wasn't an old wood juice, I'm reassured. By the way, splendid design (even if my wife says it's ugly, she's got no taste!!). Also worth noting: a full-bodied rum, a far cry from my last 100% aguardiente ;)

The rum taste is secondary. The primary you smell/feel is caramel or molases. Anyway - thats what I like :) Just tell me, why do expensive Cuba taste like good Guayana? Is it not possible to make such a rum cheaper? Btw there is 3x cheaper rum of same quality and taste

An amazing dram. At the beginning a bit close, but it's obvious due to the age count Left breathing for a couple of hours it has shown all of his qualities. Despite the incredible age count, it is still vivid and fruity, almost with floral notes when comes to drink it.

Absolutely dark colour, that's probably the last time I saw S.B.S Beast... The aroma is full, burnt caramel, chocolate, coffee and subtle sweetness. On the palate, apart from the aforementioned coffee, chocolate, I taste dried dates, nuts, leather. The finish is very strong, long, with burnt caramel and coffee. Definitely one of the most interesting Cuban rums I have ever had.

Interesting nose, which then the taste makes you doubt whether it is a rum from cuba or some old demerara. It's brutally thick, overly sweet, but minimally woody given the incredible length of the tropical ageing.

Vintage 1956. I rate it 8.6 out of 10, an excellent rum that ranks high even among my more than 1,300 reviews.

Incredible cocoa bean nose. Very smooth mouthfeel, excellent, just lacking a few degrees of alcohol.
