"A real grenade in the glass," one member wrote after giving it half an hour to open. This is classic dirty Caroni: rubber, tar and petrol up front, then dried fruit, cherry, toffee and spice underneath. At 63.9% the alcohol shows early but settles. A couple of tasters found it thin on fruit; most found the balance between the mechanic's-shop notes and the sweeter side genuinely good.

A rum tasted at Whisky Live in Paris in 2024. A perfect balance between machine shop notes and fruit. A broad, deep nose. Fruit dominates on the palate, but tar and rubber are there to give depth. The finish is very long, leaving a delicious taste as the fruit disappears and the machine shop notes become heavier. A very fine Caroni, the excessive price discouraged me from buying a bottle.

A smooth and flavorful Caroni. The nose is a beautiful fusion between caramel and toffee aromas, spices (baked apple, cinnamon, vanilla), dried fruits, and terpenic aromas (essence, tar, rubber). The profile is balanced and shows a nice roundness. A very attractive profile that just begs to be enjoyed. The palate is stunningly creamy. The dried fruits are surprisingly present against a profile rich in hydrocarbons as well as smoky and woody notes that head towards tobacco. The caramel and toffee are accompanied by chocolate, vanilla, and licorice for an intense and delicious sweetness. The alcohol is very well integrated. The finish prolongs the pleasure of the nose and palate with its gas station notes, caramelized sweetness, a slightly more exotic fruitiness, and darker aromas: dark chocolate, espresso, and leather bring this dark and elegant side that fits wonderfully here. A nice Caroni that drinks dangerously well, but unfortunately its price is a drawback.

#4844 Whisky Live in Paris 27.09.2024-30.09.2024. Another great event meeting a lot of RumX new and old friends. This year three weren't as many new releases as in 2023, but I still had a great time. Nose Light, wood, light roasted, spice, light cherry, light tar, faint rubber, balanced. Palate Balanced, wood, light roasted, faint smoke, light cherry, faint dried fruit, light tar, faint rubber, faint chocolate, spice. Finish Medium to long, wood, light roasted, dried fruit, faint rubber, light tar, spice. Once again a Caroni with a pretty high price tag. Pretty good bottling and if you get the chance you should try it.

Very dirty, but at the same time fruity and spicy Caroni. All previous reviews were from tastings, so I have to assume they didn't let the rum breathe enough. For me, after over 30 minutes, a real bomb in the glass and a price-performance hit when on offer.

Sampled this exceptional Caroni release at WLP 2024. The nose opens with bold woody notes, rich tar and rubber, layered with warm spices, roasted undertones, toffee sweetness and hints of dark fruits. The palate mirrors the nose beautifully, carrying those same deep, complex flavors through to a long, lingering finish that’s both robust and satisfying.

Typical Caroni aromas. The 63.9% are a bit sharp on the nose at first. On the palate, the full Caroni load with rubber and like licking through a metal workshop. Little fruit and something is missing overall.

... Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad, producing rum at the height of its fame, which was added in a ratio of 1:10 to naval blends. It was too strong and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. In 2000 the distillery ended production and was closed. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who liked the rum precisely for its special taste. And interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of rums "you need to try before you die." I recommend it, Caroni is really a unique rum.
