One for drinkers who chase the weird and the wild — this Indonesian cask-strength pours a profile most tasters can't quite place. Likely an aged Batavia arrack, it smells of fermented banana, smoky roasted wood, leather and cold coffee, then turns sweeter on the palate with tea, tar and exotic spice. At 59.9% it's powerful and a little abrupt; give it plenty of air.

Today the three new bottlings of the Flag Series had to face our noses and palates, this was celebrated together with DomM. For me, the South Africa is the best of the three. The one from Vietnam is rather restrained, but as a mixer with cola it develops a nice fruitiness. The Indonesian is very unusual, but that makes it interesting. Nice to have tried them all.

Definitely an interesting and destinct profile which is very hard for me to pin down. On the nose it is evolving with time. There are some fruits and vegetable notes combined with some sweetness. I also get a fermented note in the beginning, which eveolves to Gorgonzola over time. Definitely an interesting animal. Also a bit odd on the palate as well. Quite sweet with notes of candid oranges but also spices and herbal notes, which I can’t quite pin down… interesting bottling.

#4851 Whisky Live in Paris 27.09.2024-30.09.2024. Another great event meeting a lot of RumX new and old friends. This year three weren't as many new releases as in 2023, but I still had a great time. Nose Faint wood, round, light sugarcane, faint leather, faint smoke, light honey, fruits. Palate Round, light wood, medium sweet, faint smoke, light coffee, banana, spice. Finish Medium long, fresh, round, light wood, light roasted, faint coffee, lightly sweet, medium spicy. Also a big surprise and no arrack in the profile 😊

8,4:On the nose, the first impression we get is a honeyed, candied banana, fermented, perhaps sugarcane, peppery with roasted, smoky wood, some citrus and a little vanilla. On aeration, spices become exotic, currants are out, some caramel, leather and vegetal notes with a tea, floral touch, perhaps wood just a bit resinous. 8,3:On the palate, the attack is sweet with roasted wood notes as burnt sugar, some smokiness, a molasses is candied, with herbal notes, tea.Some fermented fruits come more clear, the first one is banana, fermented, later currants, especially black, going towards dried notes.In between we get tar/rubber notes and leather, the wood catches a bit resinous tone.The spices are very exotic... 8,3:The finish is pretty long, quite sweet, the fruits are fermented at first, dried later, the wood spicy with exotic spices, roasted, smoky and dry, the molasses herbaceous and with tea.Some confectionery with crunchy bread, biscuits pop later...

Super special rum and most likely a matured Batavia Arrack, which is now rather rare to find. Green peppers, sour star fruit, fermented bitter sweet papaya, star anise and cold coffee, as well as unusually smoky and woody. Although I really like Batavia arrack, it doesn't really suit my taste. Overall, however, the aroma profile is quite typical for a Batavia Arrack, but could be much better balanced.

A powerful, original rum. The nose is adorned with smoky, roasted notes (coffee), leather, toasted wood and spices of all kinds, adding intensity. Tropical fruits (pineapple) and dried fruits are slow to appear, but are accompanied by sweet notes of cane and butter, softening the rather abrupt profile. The contrast continues on the palate, with fruit (plum, exotic fruit) and sweet notes contrasting with medicinal, tarry, smoky and spicy aromas. There's leather and a rather discreet woodiness on the palate. The profile is heavy, empyreumatic and a change from what we're used to seeing in Indonesia, the blend working well. However, the alcohol could have been better integrated into this fiery profile. The finish does not falter, but gains in freshness with the aromatic herbs. The roasted, spicy and smoky notes coat the palate for quite some time, so that even the other aromas take a back seat: the fruit becomes drier and the caramel warmer. The profile leaves its mark with originality and power. A rum to discover, to explore Indonesia from another angle.

Whisky Live Paris 2024 (trade fair evaluation, only overall rating and personal recommendation to buy): This time three exotics in the Flags series, Vietnam, Indonesia and South Africa. I'm not sure yet whether I want a bottle from Indonesia. In any case, quite interesting.

A clear off-note on the nose that reminds me of cow dung, not pleasant. Fortunately not pronounced on the palate, the overall profile is coherent, but also not very individual. The weakest of the current Flag series.

A very special nose unlike anything I've ever experienced. Wood, fruit, fermented odor and a je ne sais quoi that I can't identify but that makes me want to go for it. On the palate, ceT is much sweeter and fruitier than I expected. Then the palate dries out. Quite a bitter woodiness and a pronounced taste of tea. Again, an unknown profile for me. Medium-long finish, bitter, sweet, light coffee. Surprising, in a good way.

Tasted at Whisky Live Paris 2024 - quick tasting notes, you've been warned. If memory serves, fermented with red rice? in any case, it smells fermented and why not kombucha. There's a unique and intriguing mix of tea, fruit and something like coffee or chocolate, hard to say, but it's got body.

Smells of apple peel, cider. Pours golden. The mouth feel isn't quite as interesting on the follow through. Mostly just caramel and barrel, a hint of bourbon. A hint of candy cane on the end. Finish sweet, some booze. Medium finish. Bottle split thanks to xamsx.

A very spicy, roasted nose, with peach and green apple fruit. The palate is powerful, with tea, spices, leather and banana. It's very good and certainly deserves a lot of aeration. Alcohol moderately integrated.
