La Maison Du Whisky Distillerie d'Indochine Rum Vietnam Flag Series (Collection Foundations) 2018
Curious drinkers who want an agricole from an unusual place will get a kick out of this cane-juice bottling from Vietnam. Expect citrus, yellow fruits and fresh sugarcane up front, with roasted nuts, dark chocolate and a dry, spicy oak from the cognac cask underneath. Several tasters called it a genuine surprise. A few found it a touch vegetal and watery neat, so give it air.

Grassy Vietnamese agricole with cognac-cask spice Most tasters were pleasantly surprised — a fresh, grassy, citrusy agricole with cognac-cask spice and chocolate. A few felt the cask overshadows the base or that it reads slightly thin neat.

Today the three new bottlings of the Flag Series had to face our noses and palates, this was celebrated together with DomM. For me, the South Africa is the best of the three. The one from Vietnam is rather restrained, but as a mixer with cola it develops a nice fruitiness. The Indonesian is very unusual, but that makes it interesting. Nice to have tried them all.

Nose a bit honeyed, woody, fruity and vanilla. It reminded me of the Thai Shakara. Confirmed sensation on the palate which adds a vegetal and floral side. Average finish that brings some spiciness. Interesting.

8,3:On the nose, the first impression we get is a spicy agricole, with juicy sugarcane and dried fruits, yellow fruits and roasted wood with nuts. On aeration, we find allspice, more vegetal notes as grass, floral touch, there are a mango, some citrus, from wood, chocolate and caramel. 8,4:On the palate, the attack is whisky like, with dried fruits, spices, quickly settling down to more cognac touch. The sugarcane is opening up, juicy, with yellow fruits, honey, the wood with roasted nuts, caramel, peppery. After resting the rum, melon and fig arise, grassy, floral notes and a black tea.The wood becomes resinous, caraway seeds pop up. Nicely balanced, round after the first attack. 8,3:The finish is long, spicy, dry and woody, roasted notes stay, so as juicy sugarcane with herbaceous touch, all the fruits with prunes as new addition...

In the nose we are looking at an agricole style sensation with influence from the cognac cask. I get some sweetness and green apples. Not to intense overall. On the palate I like this quite a bit. Again, rather sweet with a honey like sensation. Towards the finish I get strong a sensation of backed apples and Christmas-y spices (cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg). For me the nices bottling I was able to taste out of the distillery so far.

#4850 Whisky Live in Paris 27.09.2024-30.09.2024. Another great event meeting a lot of RumX new and old friends. This year three weren't as many new releases as in 2023, but I still had a great time. Nose Faint wood, light vegetal, sweet, light grass, faint chocolate, citrus, light nutts. Palate Round, light sweet, light wood, faint floral, light vegetal, spice, light melon, oily, faint chocolate, light caramel. Finish Medium long, light wood, dried fruit, light chocolate, round, spice, light sweet. This was a huge surprise and a well done bottling and I hope for more like this from Vietnam.

I like it much better than the Indonesia from the Flag Series. Grassy aromas, young wood and citrus fruits are the main features here. Slightly astringent and fresh on the palate. A little watery. The finish is short and alcoholic. Delicious! Many thanks @Zabo

Quite a nice rum. No really pronounced, individual profile, rather a decently made rum that could come from various countries. Would almost suspect a finish in wine barrels, the finish has some typical markers.
Review by TheRhumhoe
A surprisingly pleasant Vietnamese rum. The nose is a blend of exotic fruits (citrus and yellow fruits, mango in particular), vegetal and agricultural notes, as well as spicy aromas (chili, nutmeg), walnuts and a rather youthful woodiness. The whole is homogeneous and well structured, very promising for such a young profile. The attack on the palate is rather frank, with dried fruit and citrus fruits, as well as herbaceous notes. Honeyed, floral notes also enhance this dry profile, which gains in spiciness and oakiness with time on the palate. The profile may be pure cane juice, but there's no overdose of agricultural notes, and the flavors are varied and delicious. The alcohol juices the taste buds but is well integrated. The finish is in keeping with the palate. It's rather long, dry, spicy, roasted and vegetal. Dried and tropical fruits are not far behind, along with caramel and vanilla. This is undoubtedly one of LMDW's most striking releases, both in terms of the originality and quality of this young profile from Vietnam, a terroir that holds great promise for the future.

My reference for aged Vietnam to date! Dark chocolate, fresh sugar cane, melon and raisin, star anise and vanilla in harmony. Very round and harmonious and easy to drink. Would also pass blind for me as a good aged cask strength Agricole... PS: when sober again, it's a little too herbal for me, but still delicious, but nothing I would need a bottle of.

Many thanks to Oliver for the great sample. My first rum from Vietnam. I'm really impressed. It doesn't have the typical peppery notes but is more on the woody, spicy and slightly sweet side. I really like it very much.

Vintage 2018. I rate it 7.5 out of 10, a solid rum that doesn't disappoint.

Whisky Live Paris 2024 (trade fair evaluation, only overall rating and personal recommendation to buy): This time three exotics in the Flags series, Vietnam, Indonesia and South Africa. I'm not sure yet whether I want a bottle from Vietnam. In any case, quite interesting.

Pleasant rum with power. Delicious nose with yellow fruits, caramel, nuts and chocolate. The same in the mouth! I found the finish particularly special and delicious because it was intensely fruity. The price should also be right!

A real surprise!
Review by Djehey
Resembles an agricultural but different from the Caribbean. Smooth, with well-integrated alcohol. The nose is fresher, with citrus fruit. The palate evokes butterscotch. The finish adds wood and chocolate. Not bad.
Review by alex
It's quite pleasant, beautiful aromas of fruits, spices, vanilla dominate, a nice rather soft woodiness, character and a medium length. A nice surprise for a first from this origin. An agricole to discover.
Review by Mirco
Expressive Agricole with an intense hazelnut note that gives the profile an unusual but very appealing depth. Dark chocolate and the typical fresh grassy notes complement each other perfectly. An exciting, characterful bottling with high recognizability.

Nguyen's share: LMDW Flag Series Vietnam 2018 – 56.6% ⚠️ Watch out for the cork when opening... And sorry again, Nguyen! This Vietnamese rum is made from a variety of sugarcane endemic to the country, grown on the sandy lands of Quang Nam province. Distilled in a copper alembic of the Armagnac type, it benefits from aging in a cask that previously held cognac. Despite being only 6 years old, it shows astonishing maturity. Its aromatic profile oscillates between fruits, wood, spices and indulgence, offering a subtle balance between freshness and depth. (And we repeat: beware of the cork when opening!)
Review by JohnnyCuenta
Average at opening, it benefits enormously from a good period of airing. In the end, a real surprise very marked by the cognac cask, for its greatest good!

A very beautiful nose, on citrus fruits, very pastry-like. The palate is below, more harsh, bitter, on pepper and wood. A bit of honey and caramel come out but it’s distant. The promise of fruits on the nose is not there.
Review by Richard Krupa
Floral scent and sweet spicy taste.
Review by rhum
A big yes! Great rum, with a 100% agricole palette, the cognac is definitely present, quite dry and with a rancio side.
Review by Michal Jurka
Tasted together with Flag Vietnam. Mhoba is good, but nothing special. I liked this Vietnam more as it was a bigger and very pleasant surprise. Probably the best vietnamese rum. It is fresh, grassy, citrusy, spices.

Read full review ›This is a very good rum. The dark chocolate flavor really pops out, as does the ginger and brine. The Raspberry is prominent as well. This is good, but the cask dominates the base distillate a little too much for me.
