Velier Hampden 1753 Pure Single Jamaican Rum HLCF 2024
Most people land in the same spot: this is the friendly gateway into Hampden funk. You get the classic markers — pineapple, overripe banana, esters and nail polish — just dialed back and easy to sip at 46%. A few say the nose promises more than the palate gives, and some wish it hit harder. But for a first real HLCF, it does the job.

8,4:On the nose, all typical HLCF Hampden markers are present with esters, nail polish, overripe banana, pineapple, strawberry, some citrus, then olive and marzipan, roasted, smoky wood with confectionery, a bit spicy. On aeration, yoghurt note arises, crunchy bread, biscuits and pastry, some orange and molasses becomes minty, floral and hay-ish, slightly mineral, as we might notice rubber. 8,4:On the palate, the attack is medicinal with esters, very fruity with pineapple, banana and red fruits, orange, as the wood is roasted, smoky with caramel, crunchy bread, spicy, and pairing with molasses begetting us honeycomb, olive and cereal notes.Resting the rum helps molasses with herbaceous, grassy touch, some dairy tones arise, a little astringency, all harmonious with fruity and woody notes. 8,3:The finish is pretty long, dry, tannic, more medicinal, metallic, otherwise fresh and with notes from palate lingering on...

My conclusion here would be that it basically has all the markers of an HLCF it should have, just in a milder form. As a rum for beginners in the Hampden universe, definitely suitable. For me, a bit too thin. I would prefer the Hampden 8 here.
Review by Thunderbird
This bottling is a pleasant surprise... it basically has all the necessary aromas of a Hampden HLCF without overwhelming a newcomer... also a wonderful Hampden sipper for non-newcomers, performing well both neat and in cocktails. An absolute buy recommendation in terms of price-performance.

#4877 Whisky Live in Paris 27.09.2024-30.09.2024. Another great event meeting a lot of RumX new and old friends. This year three weren't as many new releases as in 2023, but I still had a great time. Nose Light wood, fruits, light banana, faint smoke, faint rubber, light orange, spice, faint mint. Palate Warm, fresh, balanced, light wood, faint smoke, faint rubber, faint caramel, light orange, faint pineapple, spice, faint mint. Finish Medium long, light wood, faint roasted, banana, spice, faint mint, faint rubber, light orange, faint polish. An OK rum and I wonder what the price tage will be once released. Guessing it could do well as a mixer.

Hampden Hattrick :-) Although it comes across very diluted, I like it a lot. Typical Hampden profile, what can I say? Lots of esters, tropical fruits, especially pineapple and banana, plus a bit of nail polish again. Delicious.
Review by DomM
Nose is HLCF as you would expect and quite intense given the moderate proof. However, despite the low ABV, I get a bit of an alcoholic sting which also persists after a long time in the glas. On the palate the bottling lacks sufficient power to fully transport the HLCF mark convincingly. That said, this is still tasty with classic Hampden notes and a nice sweetness rounding the profile out.
Review by Eugene227
Shows typical Hampden notes with pineapple, overripe banana, esters, and a bit of nail polish. Pleasantly accessible at 46%, but less powerful on the palate than expected. A bit thin, but still a good cocktail base and a coherent introduction to HLCF.
Review by SaibotZtar
Pure, it has everything you would expect from a Jamaica Rum Hampden: fruitiness, esters and bitter notes. Everything is relatively unspectacular and toned down but not bad, especially for beginners. In Mai Tai it is only enough for a 2/5 as it simply lacks power and body.

Edit: new blind tasting of wine secrets. He dared! A 2nd Jamaican in the line-up, and it's almost certain to be another Hampden. The characteristic esters are there on the nose, with a hint of fruit brandy, and almost a touch of cereal. But then, esters don't lie, so we're not going to look too far. On the palate, it's more of the same, with medium esters, exotic fruit and a finish that lets this almost cereal/RYE side express itself over time. Finally, a finish in a whisky barrel? There are notes that remind me of a Waterford or a Domaine des Hautes Glaces. My idea: Hampden, unknown to many, around 52°. The alcohol doesn't bite. * Drum roll * >>> Hampden 1753, Mark HLCF, 46%.

On the nose: Recognizable Hampden notes: Esters, overripe pineapple, banana, nail polish. Light wood, light smoke, light rubber. Light orange peel. Balanced. Taste: Esters, pineapple. Light wood ,smoky and rubber notes come after that and dominate the profile. Light salt. Little bit of vanilla and mint notes at the end. Finish: Nail polish, rubber, roasted profile with little bit of smoke. Then it gets fresh with a little bit of mint notes at the end. I think this is designed for a beginner rum taster and a good choice for cocktails and for that purpose its good rum.
Review by Eric Frechin
After the 8-year-old, another great gateway into the world of Jamaicans...this is a young rum, slightly esterified, with greedy notes of pineapple at the start and banana at the end. I also find a hint of the hampden characteristic on my palate, a little taste of sulfur. The whole tasting experience is fresh.
Review by Boletus
A good Hampden, but I do wonder why it was bottled. If you want to show off the beautiful HLCF brand properly, the dilution to 46% works against this and for a smooth introduction to the world of Hampden, the rum is appealingly lively despite its drinking strength, but still a little too rough.
Review by TheRhumhoe
Companion to the HLCF Classic but more "mainstream", this Hampden fulfills all its promises. The nose clearly shows Jamaican funk with banana, pineapple and orange, but also esters, nail polish and empyreumatic notes (smoky, rubber) that give this typical character. Spices, wood, olive and floral and mineral notes complement the profile well, quite aromatic despite being attenuated. The palate follows the same line, quite dry, funky and aromatically balanced. Exotic fruits, phenolic, empyreumatic and floral notes combine well, and despite the dilution, keep the DNA of the profile intact. Salty and spicy nuances, especially on vanilla, but also caramel, appear on the palate to add diversity. The alcohol is well integrated. The finish is medium-long, dry and funky. You find a greater proportion of wood, spices and roasted notes, but the fruits, esters, menthol and rubber keep their aromatic leadership. A very good cuvée to introduce esters at a reasonable strength and which is part of the basics to discover Jamaica.
Review by Christian Rudt
HLCF immediately appeals with its aromas. A great start for this new Hampden entry-level blend. On the palate, the esters tend to fade into the background. The taste is more salty than fruity - I liked the LROK the Younger a little better.
Review by Beaureve
Nose: very fruity, especially pineapple but also some banana. Plus esters and light nail polish notes. Taste: very similar to the nose. Again pineapple and esters. Also light wood and smoke notes and at the end a slightly bitter touch. I like it but wouldn't need it again. A bit like the HLCF Classic in light (which I like much better).
Review by abaker-rum
An excellent new expression of HLCF from Hampden. I’m a big fan of the HLCF classic overproof, but this is a nice toned down version if you are looking for a lighter experience. You get the classic Hampden funk with overripe pineapple and banana. I love the finish on this rum with banana, caramel, chocolate, and vanilla.
Review by TheJona'Spirits
Tasting memories at the Limoges Spirits Festival. 👃 Triple notes of overripe pineapple, esters and varnish. You find overripe banana, light tropical fruits, a bit of smoke, new rubber, green olive brine, salty and spicy spices. 😋 Same triple, the wood replaces the varnish. Overripe fruit, softer spices, vanilla, light caramel, quite indulgent. Saltiness of green olive tapenades, tires. ⛳ Medium length, drying smoke, bitter, more pronounced wood, car care products, overripe tropical fruits, spices. 💡 Very good value for money especially considering the soaring prices of the distillery's releases. In my top 10 molasses 2025 under 60🍒. Everything you expect from a young HD.
Review by Skyfly
A great bottling from Hampden - the typical aromas are unmistakable. Lots of pineapple and banana, balanced esters and some wood, spices and smoky aromas. Alcohol well integrated. Not particularly complex, but well suited for beginners or for mixing
Review by Fuwi
Good entry-level for newbies who want to venture into the wild world of Jamaicans. Nice funk, wild esters and great fruit on the nose. The ABV is noticeable but doesn't knock you out right away. You can slowly work it out neat, but it will surely perform well in a mixer. On the palate great fruit notes of pineapple, banana and a bit of mirabelle, nicely top-fermented and like a compote cooked on the beach of Montego Bay.
Review by F.L.O.
So this is the new "beginner's Hampden" for friends of young vintages. It has really turned out well. The nose is outstanding and makes you expect more than it actually is on the palate. Nevertheless, it is very successful and can be enjoyed neat or in a cocktail. The daiquiri is a real hit.
Review by Александр Иванов
Nose: lot of ripe yellow fruits: mango, banana, pineapple, nectarines; also esters, polish, solvents, little bit of rubber. Some lemons, lavender, candies and pumpkin. Taste: bright. Sweet yellow fruits: again banana, mango, pineapple, mandarine, candies, ginger. Some esters, nail polish, paint and little bit of smoke. Aftertaste: long and fruity, little bit salty, smoky, with part of polish. Really good!
Review by Vincent D
Tasted LMDW Odéon quickly and I think this rum will quietly take the place of the 8yo in the standard Hampden range. You get what you pay for with a rum that has all the Hampden hallmarks but remains accessible. It's well made. Somewhere between an 8-year-old and a Younger. I really liked it.
Review by Arya_NBV
Nice golden color, fruity smell, not very alcoholic, not sharp. Beautiful oily legs in the glass. Mild taste, slightly spicy, not intrusive. Mild aftertaste, slightly spicy. Hardly any funk. Interesting that Hampden can also be mild. Tasty, but I won't buy it again. For Hampden, I'd rather go for OWH or higher if I'm in the mood for extreme. I'm a bit disappointed. Neither fish nor fowl. With Jamaica, I'm looking for a stronger character. A light sipper, but there are tastier ones. I also don't think it's a good introduction to Hampden, because the other marks overwhelm you if you think it's a slow progression.

15/03/25: tasted @ Brussels Rhum Festival. Note: I was experiencing severe palate fatigue. I was very happy to be able to already taste this new Hampden release. It tasted pretty average and rather thin on the palate, but I think the retail price is worth it.
Review by Beach-and-Rum 🏖️🌴
Very balanced and accessible Hampden that doesn't overwhelm at all and still really cheers you up. The lower alcohol content also makes it very pleasant for beginners. For me, a nice sipper that also fits well in cocktails.
Review by LesTontonsMaltés
A nose offering ripe banana, roasted pineapple, varnish, olive, spices... An olfactory carnival. And a 46% that opens up a palette that's fat and creamy! With a slightly mineral edge... ⛰️ 👄 The 46% provides a smooth entry, still with that fat, funky but controlled aspect, banana, pineapple, caramel, ginger, and still that Jamaican signature that makes the taste buds dance. 😋 🏁 A bass solo in roots reggae mode. Long, hot, and unforgettable... and just when you think it's over, bam, a little return to the flamed banana. 🎵 🍌

... Hampden, the legendary Jamaican distillery that produces rum as well as alcohol for perfume. In all the rums from this distillery you will taste wild esters, after which your whole organism will soak up the smell of golden tropical fruits - mango, papaya, pineapple, peach. One of the "must try before you die" rums
Review by François Delmotte
As a beginner in the world of Jamaican rums, I'm becoming increasingly interested in them. Nose: fruity, with aromas of banana, ester and a touch of herbaceousness for me. Taste: similar to the nose, still with a fresh tropical fruit (banana-pineapple) flavour. Nice length, with the woody side coming through a little more. Nice tasting.
Review by St. Dubs
Complex flavor. It definitely tastes funky and tropical, with a long finish that seems to linger. Aftertaste is kind of like leather and tar. Not particularly enjoyable, but drinks smoothly and isn't as harsh as other young Jamaicans. Update: ok, in a Daiquiri, it is amazing.
Review by FelixS
Iodine aromas and lots of overripe fruit on the nose, pineapple, banana, spicy and fresh. On the palate salty and spicy, lean, moderate ester aroma, dry, straightforward, light and nice to drink.
Review by Theo Pohle
Hampden with light ester notes, fresh in taste and with a slight aged note. Definitely suitable for cocktails.

Super rapport qualité prix !
Review by Robert Kausch
Basically a solid Hampden rum with plenty of fruit and nail polish funk. However, at 46% it seems a bit thin to me. A few more % would certainly not have hurt it - also due to the increased ester content. For someone not yet used to cask strength rums but wanting to test more esters, the 1753 is certainly a good choice. I can also imagine it well in cocktails; however, I only had a sample so I haven't tried that yet.
Review by Adam Rajchert
Scent: Gum, nail polish remover, more pineapple candy than pineapple itself, flowers, permanent market, orange, baked apples, clove, later sweet resin, very ripe mango, jackfruit, fermentation, herbs, chamomile, some leather, tropical fruit mix, very intense raisins, dried apricot, Taste: A punch of intermittent flavors - tropical fruits, bread notes, mango peel, burnt pineapple, leather, sour, teases as if one took a sip of heavily carbonated highly mineralized water, minerality of course, saltiness, heavily fermented fruits, spices, needles, pickled lemons, artichokes, dried black olives, bitter orange dried herbs
Review by Miki
Very interesting and complex rum. Not the beat Hampden but still solid rum.
Review by DerSpaten43
A typical HLCF. Because of the typical Hampden esters, it has notes of varnish and glue and for me has this typical 'industrial' note of Hampden. (So the taste reminds me of machines and metal, not that this rum was produced industrially) It is relatively young and could, in my opinion, benefit from a bit longer aging.
Review by Pavel Ungr, RumRock
I rate it 7.8 out of 10, solid rum that doesn’t disappoint.
Review by Solidfunk
I didnt love the raw vwrson of HLCF on rhe 8 mark collection, but a little aging does this very well. Banana, vanilla. Plenty of florals. The experience here is pretty smoothe. Light golden pour. Medium finish. Sample thanks to xamsx.
Review by dhalmo23
Relatively young Hampden. I find it still a bit too sharp-edged, but still really good. Nice ester note. In terms of taste, I think it could offer a bit more, at least the finish has some wood, which is otherwise somewhat missing. Despite the criticism, it's still a great rum, especially for the price.
Review by Emanuel S
This rum can fill two jobs. It can be a sipper. Its absolutely up for that job. Not something out of this world, but not a disappointment either. It works in a cocktail also. It takes up space but it doesnt take over the drink. A Jungle Bird is a perfect fit for this rum.
Review by Markus Fjellstad Israelsen
Bit too thin for a sipper, but is great in cocktails!
Review by shotmaster
Actually bought as a daiquiri mixer. Tried it neat out of habit beforehand. Really positively surprised. For its 46%, zero alcoholic on the tongue. When drinking it straight, it felt a bit dry in the mouth. It almost reminded me of a smoky whiskey. Very clear ester notes of pineapple and banana. What surprised me the most, however, was the finish—really long and characterized by a sweetness I've rarely experienced before.

I guess not as crazy as other offerings I’ve tried from them but really gives you all the directions you expect from them

Read full review ›A fairly young Jamaican, yet totally mild and bringing everything you expect from Hampden. The ester content is in the middle range for this distillery, which is a good choice to not scare off beginners with overwhelming funk and still offer enough depth for the advanced drinker to stay interesting. Not the ultimate revelation, but a damn solid rum that you like to have in your cabinet. Plus, it's extremely easy to drink. It will make awesome cocktails anyway.

Read full review ›Ideal for those who want to introduce themselves to the funky Jamaican world without risking disappointment. I found this initiative commendable. As a lover of this distillery, I have repeatedly come up with its rums to my friends with mixed results. It took me a while, but I realized that you cannot go from 0 to 100 and it is right to approach this world in stages. This rum is what was needed: good job.

Read full review ›This is a great bottle of rum. Its very well balanced, leaning a little towards the fruitier elements but it reigns that in with the spices and black tea. It’s packed full of flavor and drinks very complex for its proof. It’s among the most approachable aged Hampden’s I’ve had, offering more punch that the Hampden OWH while not veering into esoteric punch you in the face ester levels. Overall a great rum. I do have to note though, for being a product meant for cocktails, it’s far too expensive given the average price tag I see of $80. I won’t complain about more Hampden Estate rum being made available though.
