Planteray Mister Fogg Navy Rum (No. 1) 2024

Anyone chasing an affordable navy-style bottle for tastings or cocktails will find plenty here. Expect dried fruit, molasses, burnt caramel and a heavy dose of Christmas spice — cinnamon and clove run the show. At 55.7% the alcohol shows on the tongue. Several tasters flag added sugar and a slightly artificial edge, and more than a few say it drinks more spiced than truly navy.

Sweet, spice-forward navy blend for mixing Well-priced and easy to like at first, with dried fruit and Christmas spice. Many feel the sweetness and heavy cinnamon push it toward a spiced rum rather than a real navy.

Impressive navy-style rum from Planteray! Interestingly, from the taste and aroma, I would have guessed that the biggest portion of the blend is DDL. However, according to official information, the dominant component is WIRD. On the nose, woody notes dominate, accompanied by hints of dark dried fruit, banana peel and burnt caramel, which give it a robust, slightly roasted profile. The palate reveals an interesting mix of molasses, dried fruit, and wood, balanced with subtle black pepper and a faint touch of citrus. The finish is medium-long, carrying forward notes of woody oak, molasses, and a pleasant hint of honey, intertwined with lingering orange peel and banana. This rum is well-rounded yet still retains that bold navy strength. A solid 8.5/10 for me!

Edit: after standing a little in the open bottle of Split, I think it has degraded quite a bit. The artificial notes are now more apparent. Corrected downwards. Pure it is surprisingly better than expected. I thought I wouldn't like it at all. It's nothing special, but you can use it as a cheap rum in a Lumumba, I think it's well suited for that. The dosage doesn't dominate that much either.

@BCB Berlin: Basically not a bad rum, but somehow I miss the balance here. Acidity, wood, sweetness, fruit and tannins come together here without really coming together. The 5g dosage is also absolutely unnecessary for such a product in my opinion. I'll have to take another look at it...

I found the background to Mr. Fogg very interesting and moving. That's why I was already looking forward to this rum. On the nose, it is reminiscent of apple strudel, stewed plums and winter spices (gingerbread). Similar on the palate. A pleasant entry-level sipper, but for me it doesn't really have much in common with a (good) navy rum.

I think it's important to remember with this rum that the primary goal here was not to create a good rum, but to faithfully replicate rum as it was once made. And the story is compelling. And the rum itself is certainly not bad!

7,8:On the nose, flowery molasses, soap, then winterly ambient with roasted wood notes like nuts, dark chocolate, caramelized sweet spices like clove, cinnamon, metallic patina, cherries and rubber, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, dried, tropical and citrus fruits are out, some candied, earthy molasses with tobacco, dark with black tea, various delicious notes if pastry, biscuits, some allspice. 7,5:On the palate, the attack is winterly with various roasted wood notes like pastry, caramel, biscuits, dark chocolate, leather, spicy with baking spices, peppery, fruits like pineapple, cherries, citrus and dried fruits, sweet molasses with honey, earthy and red wine, slightly synthetic, when the rum is oxidized. 7,6:The finish is medium long, dry&tannic, still sweet and winterly with notes from palate lingering on. Edit:14.3.26

Navy rum that is really fun. Only the dosage spoils the great story somewhat.

#6776 10.05.2026 Relaxing with a few samples after getting back from a nice dinner in Flensburg. Listening to some tracks by Sub6 and olly James on Spotify. First off the price quality performance (release price) is very good in my mind. A nicely balanced and notes of molases, fruits, chocolate and some sweetness in the spicy palate.

And my favorite for today, one more to come, let’s see. Finally you can feel the ABV, tropical and dried fruits here, plus sweetness from honey and caramel, also slightly woody.

Crazy what Plantation has done again. Unbeatable value for money. Lots of Jamaican influence. Nice tropical fruits with some esters. Because of the value for money, you should definitely try it at least once.

Masterclass V&B December 2, 2025. 👃 Very light esters of a fruit liqueur. Tropical fruits (flambéed banana and pineapple) and dried fruits. Spicy and vanilla wood, a bit chemical, heated sugar, a soft caramel liqueur side, kitchen spices. 😋 Lots of spices, obvious vanilla side, cinnamon, dried fruits, tropical fruits flambéed with sugar, sweetness and roundness of caramel (you can feel a bit of added sugar) which allows a very good integration of the alcohol. Impression of wine cask. ⛳ Quite short I find compared to the ABV. Spices, wood, astringency. Sweet combination of banana, candied orange, honeyed and syrupy molasses. 💡 A simple and accessible blend. Low-cost Navy Rum slightly sweetened that allows to "handle" the 55° rather easily. Recommended to discover this type of English Rum.

OK, after the first tasting I deliberately didn't create a rating. I was still too busy brushing my teeth. After a week, I tried it again. Today it's only bad, the first time it was still disgusting. Too sweet, too Christmassy and spicy, more "rum-based spirit" than rum. Luckily, I got the sample before I fell for the bottle.

Amazing aroma. The scent offers notes of caramel, dried fruit, cherries, and wood with a subtle caramelized sweetness. The taste is rich in tropical fruits, citrus, and pineapple, complemented by a sweet honey touch and delicate hints of red wine. The finish is full, fruity, and harmoniously sweet.

Very much covers all expectations I have when tasting a navy rum. The blend is very well executed delivering on dark notes, dried fruits and Christmas spices. Overall I the taste gives the impression that the components aren’t too old. But given the price point this is fair. There is a hint of „too sweet“ for me, but it is very much ok and the added sugar is not overwhelming.

Warm yet smooth! Spicy on initial taste but smooths very quickly with a nice warmth in the chest! Nice medium finish with a dark chocolate lingering that is very pleasant. Olive and dried fruits on the nose. Big fan of this Rum and it packs a cool story! Definitely a keeper in the collection

I've been looking for an affordable (in the sense of around 50 euros) and good navy rum for my tasting for a long time. This one actually comes pretty close to that. On the palate I have dried fruit, black pepper and hints of red wine. The alcohol is not perfectly integrated and is clearly noticeable on the tongue. I'm still pleasantly surprised.

Smell is pretty rich here. Apricot and plum. Some oak, maybe. Cough medicine from the Mauritius element. Dried fruit, some wood. Pours dark golden. A little tar, burnt tire in your mouth from Trini element. A little overripe banana. Some more cherry cough syrup. A little sweet, probably dosed since it's Plantation. Still, among the better Plantation I've had. Nice Navy blend. Bottle.

Not a typical navy profile. Relatively mild, somewhat sweet, especially cinnamon and Christmas spices. Relatively alcoholic on the finish. I don't quite understand the bottling. A good blend, but in my eyes it has absolutely nothing to do with a navy rum.

Tasted at GRF2025 Although its dosed, very good price quality balance. I have to admit, now that Planteray is more transparent on the content of their rums (leaving the discussion if it's forced or not) I do appreciate the brand a lot more.

First version of the Planteray Navy Blends after I recently had the 2025 in the glass. This one smells a bit sweeter, a bit musty comes after a few minutes. On the palate lots of cinnamon, a bit winey and citrus fruits. Clearly less balanced than its successor, which I should taste again calmly.

Boy was I looking forward to this! Navy-Blend recreation from a mighty (too mighty?) Barbadian player? Historical background and research by the one and only Wonk? But let's not get ahead of ourselves. Colour: light tawny Nose: Initial impression from the fresh sample was "Dominosteine?" (that chocolate covered triple layer sweets of marzipan, jelly and gingerbread). The rested sample is lighter, less jelly and fruity but still sweet, Christmas spice and white chocolate Taste: I can't wrap my head around how christmas-y it tastes. Sweet, cinnamon-clove mix, milk chocolate, powdered sugar. Finish: Still sweet, christmas bells still ringing. Verdict: I don't know. This doesn't taste like Navy to me. This is a sweet Christmas-themed spiced rum. I don't see how this is supposed to be historically accurate. Unless the British Navy was made up of Santa and his elves (turns out Matt was only responsible for the book part?!). What a let down (it's not "bad", but it's not what the story was trying to sell, imho). Pusser's Dockyard feels more Navy that this.

While I was positively surprised by the first sip, the rum gets worse with every sip: the strong cinnamon note increasingly takes over, Guyana and Barbados flash repeatedly. In the end, baking spices and a sweet artificial note dominate. For me, this has nothing to do with Navy Rum. The slight alcoholic sharpness suggests that these are rather young distillates. Possibly interesting in cocktails or to introduce sweet rum fans to non-sweet rums.

This rum should appear here next year and I estimate the price should be between 50 and 80 Euros, which is a great price for such a rum. It’s a good and honest rum and I think many people will like it. I like it too and can recommend it.
