Savanna Unshared Cask for Germany 2013
Opinion lands squarely in the "nice nose, weaker palate" camp. Almost everyone loves the smell: strawberry, ripe fruit, raisin and a clear Cognac-cask note, sometimes like "saure Erdbeerdrops" in a candy jar. Then the palate turns peppery, dry and a touch bitter, and the Cognac takes over. Several note it needs real time in the glass, and at 49.8% it reads a little thin.

How does Savanna Unshared Cask for Germany 2013 taste?
Summarized by AI from community reviews.
Gorgeous fruity nose, thinner Cognac-led palate Beautiful strawberry-and-Cognac nose that most agree the palate can't quite match — pleasant, fruity, but short, peppery and lacking depth. Give it air; it improves a lot.

#5053 30.11.2024 Tasting at Whisky Watcher tasting in Odense. Nose Fresh, medium intense, lightly sweet, light glue, light caramel, dried fruit, light wood. Palate Light oily, light wood, fruits, light honey, dried fruit, light cherry, light caramel, light berries. Finish Medium to long, fresh, light oily, wood, light apricot, raisin, light honey, light apple. The empty glass has nice cherries, caramel, vanilla and a touch of tea.

Not an easy sipper. Nice cognac and kumquat at first, but quite pungent and bitter towards the end. Sample was more than enough, don't need a bottle of it.
Review by Lot-NAS
When I have the bottle yesterday it tasted like pure Cognac with strange herbal notes. I left some at the glass and put a lid on it and it has changed a lot. It is way smoother and feels more balanced. Just to make sure I poured a second glass and it is like tasting two completely different spirits. And here comes the question which to rate? Assuming you don’t always pour your glass a day ahead I am opting for the third option: A single bottle double glass blend. The nose starts off a bit cognac-ish (obviously), some raisins, caramel and a bit toasted wood, cooked apple, some tea and for further details see above. On the palate it is way more balanced compared with the initial impression. So just to make sure: Take your time! In addition to the nose we find green pepper and the apples tend to be a bit more present. There is also more wood and black pepper. It is sway and spice, nice. The finish warm with a sweetness reminding me of an old Calvados. Yesterday I would have given it a 7.9-8, today it’s a 8.4.

Very nice and fruity on the nose. Rather lively than overly mature with dried fruits alongside influence from the ex-cognac cask. Lacks a bit of intensity and complexity on the palate for a higher rating, however.

I'm beginning to think that Savamna's bottlings and I are not going to be friends. I usually agree with many of the notes, but do Savanna's rums bottle me? No! Something bothers me that I can't even put my finger on.

Thanks to Jarek, the donor who freshly opened the bottle during the sample exchange. Wasn't expecting anything great. But really delicious. On offer for just 111€ at Cognac Paradies and not tied to a bundle for once.

I'm beginning to wonder if I'm not expecting too much from Savanna - but the old bottlings are too memorable for that. At least it's a seahorse this year, which is a big improvement on the moray eel - now we just need to work on the bottle contents. The nose starts very promisingly - light notes of Herr, strawberry, cognac and other fruits. On the palate, it reminds me of a rather flat and thin Agricole from Isautier/Riviere du Mat and unfortunately disappoints my expectations across the board, as I also find the finish rather short. ( Yes I know, this is a molasses rum, probably what I perceive as Agricole comes from the cognac cask ) Certainly not a bad rum, but for me it's just enough for 8 points with a tendency towards 7.9 Let's see if it still gets better when it's a bit open - as Sebastian writes. ... I've now left the glass covered overnight and somehow I don't taste any great improvement ... but it tastes great in MaiTai and Daiquiri - for that it gets another 0.2 points

Overall stable traditional savanna with a great nose of strawberry but also caramel, baked apple and roasted almonds. On the palate, a full broadside of cognac, lots of wood, tannins and astringency. Reminiscent of a mature Calvados on the finish. Unfortunately falls off very much on the palate, hence the deductions here. Good but doesn't really pick me up.
Review by Basti
I quite like the nose. Lots of fruit, spices, honey and cognac. On the palate, there's a lot of influence from the cognac cask and for me it's too reminiscent of cognac. Also a little too bitter and too thin for my taste.
Review by Dr.Django
This should be, unlike my photo, unshared cask #4 for Germany and not #2. If I am not mistaken. And also by far the mildest and creamiest of all the undivided German Savanna casks. An easy sipper with well-integrated alcohol, a familiar strawberry yogurt note, and a short finish.
Review by cigares
A fruity nose with esters, the alcohol is quite present with a fermented vegetal side and some sweetness. The wood provides support. The first taste lacks a bit of aroma compared to the nose, with the fermented and dry herb notes taking over. You also notice more cedar wood. The finish is rather long, focused on cedar wood and dry herbs with a nice sweetness.

Starts with very deep cognac notes, so clearly the resting time is good. Strawberries slowly come through. Nice and smooth on the palate. Not the most intense Savanna but nice and pleasing that you want to take the next sip right away. On the palate with a slight dryness but nice fruit and a little sweetness. Beautiful bottling.

Could also be a very sweet young Cognac. Doesn't fully convince me, lacks edges and corners.
Review by Jarek
Wonderfully fruity and fresh on the nose, with strawberry and baked apple. The palate does not quite deliver what the nose promises, the fruit is not as strong, but there is more spice and wood. Medium-long finish, with the cognac finish striking me the most. I had initially feared that the rum would be too weak for me with less than 50% alcohol, but fortunately that didn't turn out to be the case. I would have rated the nose alone at 8.6. Overall a good 8.5.

Delicious Savanna with a beautiful nose that combines freshness, ripeness and Savanna fruit profile. Besides strawberry, raisin is particularly prominent. But the nose is definitely better than the palate. You can take it with you ... and the label is also quite nice.
Review by Chrischi78
On the nose, a little candy shop. Like sour strawberry drops in a candy jar, but meant pleasantly. Slight brandy note. On the palate initially decent sweetness and the strawberry notes with a clearly noticeable alcohol content for the volume percentage and prominent cognac note, and a medium-long somewhat bitter, peppery finish. Overall, in my opinion, it doesn't justify the price.
Review by Oliver
Very pleasant nose. However, it lacks power and intensity on the palate. Very round and pleasing Savanna.
Review by Mentalo
The bottling for the German market is a bit weak at only 49.8%, but not watery. The fruit notes still come through well. Along with spices and some wood. On the finish then raisin. Alcohol is very well integrated. It just lacks depth and intensity. Still not a bad bottling.
Review by Schnubbii
The rum was allowed to breathe for 35 minutes. On the nose then somewhat similar to a Cognac. On the palate surprisingly flat, with a strange honey-herbal note and the Savanna-typical Tictac wintergreen moment only very lightly in the background. Even a few drops of water don't help, it just gets even flatter. The finish is also rather short. No sorry, in my view it's nothing, not needed.
Review by Rum Watcher
Needs a little time in the glass, then changes dramatically...and for the better! Very round...I like it. Certainly has little in common with older bottlings and the cognac cask is very dominant, but it fits. Nice

A very expressive nose on this Savanna. The cognac cask is very present. Then immediately a nice and unusual very marked strawberry smell. Also a vegetal side. On the palate, unfortunately, you don’t find the promises of the nose. Cognac, caramel, chili. Sweet and spicy at the same time but a bit too monotonous. Finish still on the cognac. This strawberry candy sensation is still quite pleasant.
Review by Wernie
Typical Savanna nose, fine sweetened strawberries with a slight spice. Delicious. It goes straight to the palate but unfortunately quite short, quickly turning peppery. For nearly 50%, too alcoholic, poorly integrated. The finish is a woody Calvados. I can’t really understand the exaggerated prices for Savannas, especially for candidates like this. Thanks to the sample donor. 😊

Keeping the theme"Germany" continues... On the nose: Typical Savanna notes. Cognac cask influence and green apple notes. Ester. Quite light in general due the abv level. After sitting in the glass, you get more sweeter notes like raisin. Taste: First sip is peppery, spicy and quite a mixed bag. I let this rum sit in the glass for a while and on the second sip its totally different rum. Oily, light, warm. You get raisin, caramel, just a little bit of citrus notes. Cognac notes on the background. Not a wholelot of complexity and it could be slightly more intense. Finish: Oily, cognac notes, bitter notes. Woody notes. Vanilla and honey notes, but its mildly sweet. Pleasantly surprised. You have to let this rum sit in the glass and then you get way better tasting notes. However, this rum lacks of complexity and the abv could be just a little bit higher.

31-07-2025 - Rate 7.9 Have tasted Romhattens Savanne and liked it very much. Hoped for more with this Savanna, but not quit as good as the other one. And ABV is in the low end. I usually like it best when it’s above 55%, for Savanna rums. Notes of raisin, apple, caramel and a hint of glue/methanol. Palate again raisin, caramel and apple with a hint of cognac. Short finish with wood and cognac.
Review by Filip Šikula
The nose is very pleasant, fruity and only slightly woody. The taste is quite full considering the low, on Savanna I would say very low ABV, fruity and like the nose, rather less woody. Still, it found its place in our tastings - at breakfast.
Review by Ysmir
Poured from a bottle that's been open for ~7 months, and is mostly full. Very good single cask from Savanna. Lots of berry and orchard fruit on the nose and palate. Industrial notes turn from bubblegum on the nose to definitively glue on the palate. Influences from the Cognac cask felt throughout the experience. Lower proof leads to a meh mouthfeel, but the intensity and finish are still good.

RX21868 sample 19 calendar Pavla Špačka 2024 Blind tasting Color golden yellow Nose tropical fruit, esters, floral tones, sweetness, spice Taste sweetness tropical fruit, pineapple, esters, mustiness, flowers, alcohol noticeable Finish medium long mustiness, tropical fruit, flowers, esters, warming, Probably a younger piece, for me depth and complexity are missing At first sniff I would say Jamaica but later I lean more towards Savanna

Savanna Cognac for Germany 😂 Very nice Savanna unshared. On the nose I get Cognac and a few other side notes. On the palate lots of fruit, Cognac, ...and light sweetness. I like it.
Review by Michal S
Ok Savanna, quite drinkable, but I don't need more than a sample. The nose and taste have a distinct cognac + other fruit, the surprise is pepper.
Review by Richard Krupa
Less pronounced nose, sweetness on the palate, cognac, spices at the end.
