"A coconut bomb," as one German taster put it — that's the first thing almost everyone notices. It's the classic Planteray XO with a PX sherry finish layered on top: coconut, vanilla, caramel and raisiny sherry, soft and sweet at 40%. Many call it a lovely starter with finishes, though a few think the coconut reads almost added and prefer the plain XO.

On the nose, for me clearly American oak with light spice and fruit notes. The taste is very convincing. Initially light wood notes which immediately transition into fruit and spice notes. In the finish, the aging in sherry casks becomes clear and it lingers pleasantly long in the mouth. The Planteray PXXO is a mild and very smooth rum with balanced notes.

@BCB Berlin: Delicious upgrade to the normal XO. Sherry influence noticeable but not too dominant, very tasty easy sipper to get into the rum world with finishes. You can definitely do it! I personally also like it better than the normal plantation XO.

Oh man, the last rum for today. This Planteray is an average Planteray. The nose is chocolate, vanilla and spicy, there's also some coconut. Then on the palate, lots of (dark) chocolate, some spice and sherry. spice and sherry.

#6349 Enjoying a few samples while watching the Eco-Challenge Fiji, man those racers are tough. Again a rum with a good price to quality. I tasted it the first time shortly after release in Copenhagen and found it pretty OK. Nicely balanced yet light with fruit, caramel, nutts and a pretty sweet palate.

A bit in the same vein as the first 20-year plantation version. I find that the coconut taste and smell are much more pronounced, it's even surprising, like an addition... it's round and easy to drink. perfect for a beginner. On the palate, and especially at the end, there's a little spicy bitterness.

The Planteray PXXO has a wonderful nose with lots of coconut, sherry, and vanilla. It smells sweeter than it actually is. On the palate, a woody note joins in. In the finish, the sherry comes through nicely again along with some spiciness. Price-wise, this rum definitely knows how to impress.

Ein schönes Produkt, auch wenn es in dieser Kategorie noch viele andere gibt. Man riecht sofort den PX Sherry raus, dazu Kokosnuss und Vanille. Im Geschmack finde ich den Sherry dominant, allerdings hat er einen interessanten Twist mit der Kokosnuss. Ich empfinde ihn nicht als Upgrade zum Planteray XO. Dafür ist mir der Unterschied zwischen den beiden zu groß. Beide stehen individuell für sich.

A very sweet rum with very, very little alcohol bite, you get lots of sweet aromas on the tongue, for me coconut, caramel, cinnamon (at one point a bit like those cinnamon chewing gums). The finish leans towards woody coconut but it's hard for the sweetness to stay along for the ride permanently. I compared it head to head with the Doorlys XO, can recommend it to anyone new to rum to easily and pleasantly grasp the difference between sweetened and unsweetened rum. Had a lot of fun.

A coconut bomb as it is written in the book. Lots of vanilla and lots of coconut. Unfortunately a little too sweet and too little alcohol for me. But very suitable for beginners. Much more exciting compared to the xo

Masterclass V&B December 2, 2025. 👃 My first impression is a smell of musk (it smells like feet, sweat). Really unpleasant. Then the alcohol of the port, fatty sugar, coconut chocolate ice cream aroma, cough syrup, vanilla caramel. A bit of dried fruit in alcohol. 😋 Coconut liqueur, brown sugar, cough syrup, dried fruits from Christmas cake, caramel, wood spices, vanilla, chocolate, a rancid side. Quite sickening. ⛳ Short, liqueur, sugar that envelops the mouth. Vanilla, caramel and coconut. You have to drink water before continuing the tasting. 💡 Nice, pleasant but for the price at 5-10€ less you can get much better, without added sugar, without this syrupy side.

I tasted this as part of a comparison between the XO and PXXO, and this rum truly stands above the original version. On first sniff, it instantly reminds me of the plum cake with sugar topping that my grandma used to make, evoking a warm, nostalgic feel. The taste pleasantly surprises with slightly tart fruit notes, adding an unexpected, but welcomed layer to the sweetness. The finish lingers for quite short time, but that is understandable considering the ABV. I got some dried fruits, vanilla and old wood, together with an omnipresent layer of baking spices. It’s definitely a lovely upgrade over the classic XO, and while I’m usually more into absolutely different kind of rums, this PXXO brings a refreshing, sweet twist amidst all the cask strength monsters I’ve been sipping lately. A delightful change of pace, haha!

Aged in the famous (favorite XO) sherry cask. Immediately on the nose you feel that slightly sweet scent but the taste doesn't turn into the sweet category. Slightly oilier than the XO and there is that little sherry taste on the tip of your tongue but just enough so it’s not flashy. Great balance, great flavor world but one is used to that with the XO, and this adds a little icing on the cake to make it even naughtier. For me on par with the XO, couldn’t choose between them :)

Notes from Whisky Live Paris 2024 - to be reviewed and expanded upon. I've been told "have you tried it? it's great" several times, so I went and tasted it, even though I was skeptical. XO is already a rum I don't drink much anymore, so this cask won't lighten it up, on the contrary. There are nice notes of mango and coconut, but it's too sweet for me. However, as a gift for beginners++, then yes!

Nah... is this a blend of Planteray Dry Cut and XO Barbados? Doesn't have to be... too much coconut. Probably ideal for beginners, but better to buy the two mentioned above separately and improve.

I love coconut and that's why this rum is perfect for me. You can really taste the coconut nicely, but it's not overpowering. The sherry note is also very nice. It's a mild rum, especially suitable for beginners.

On the nose, there are immediately strong sherry notes, raisins, honey, and very ripe fruits. Along with that come vanilla, a bit of wood, and a pleasant spiciness. On the palate, it starts sweet with caramel, sherry, and dried fruits. Then it becomes a bit drier and woodier, with raisins, vanilla, and a slightly tart spice. The wood is noticeable but not dominant. The finish is rather medium-length, slightly oily, with coconut, sherry, and a pleasant woody note. Overall, a pleasantly soft, sweet-fruity rum that's easy to drink and still offers quite a few aromas. Fun to enjoy, even if it lacks a bit of depth and complexity for a higher rating.

The Planteray PXXO is a real dessert rum: coconut, vanilla, and caramel meet raisins, dates, chocolate, and roasted nuts. Silky smooth and distinctly sweet, the PX finish brings more dark fruit and depth than the regular XO. I especially like the mix of coconut and sherry – almost like liquid candy. Definitely not for fans of bone-dry rums, but as a cozy sipper, damn tasty.

The rum is a flavor bomb of coconut. Nicely integrated alcohol. Light dried fruits and raisins from the PX. But also sweetness. On the finish, oak, wood, and lots of coconut again. A rum for the second beginner phase, as the flavor profile is simpler.

Already reminds me in the smell of cherry with chocolate, and for me also coconut (my partner doesn't smell that at all) very mild and balanced. Also mild and soft on the palate, yet full-bodied. Intense fruits, chocolate. Long finish. Very nice product.

This rum causes confusion with the Plantation XO Anniversary and unfortunately they have nothing to do with each other. The finish in Pedro Ximenez does not suit it at all. It's sweet but without the caramel, vanilla side and without the coconut notes present in the other version. Here we have a weird sensation at the end of the mouth and no real gustatory interest. A big disappointment.

On the nose immediately coconut, possibly banana and cherry, but almost only coconut; tongue is a nice sweet and spicy rum, I like it, subtle successful PX influence, rather a sweet rum, but tasty, medium-long finish, sweet and spicy.

12/05/2026: Advent calender: Le Monde des Rhums 2025. This PXXO version was aged in three types of casks: ex-bourbon, ex-Cognac and PX. The nose is pure coconut, it's like a liquid Bounty. On the palate I get the same cinnamon notes as the XO. I slightly prefer this over the original XO, but not worth the price.

I'm a beginner and actually come from whisky, I've tried some mainstream rums before, but I don't like this one at all. The aroma is somehow extremely artificial and just not good. Won't be coming into my glass again.
