Elixir Distillers of London Black Tot Rum Historic Solera

Sherry runs the whole show here — raisins, prunes, figs and red-wine notes, with caramel and a touch of vanilla underneath. Several tasters say it drinks more like a sherried whisky than a rum; the Caribbean blend of Guyana, Barbados and Jamaica ends up playing support. It's soft, a little sweet and very drinkable at 46.2%, though a few find the sherry too dominant and the body a bit thin.

Sherry-driven, soft sipper more whisky than rum Opinions split on the heavy sherry hand: fans of sherried whisky love it, while rum-first drinkers can't find much rum under the oloroso and PX. Easy but one-dimensional.

It's not a bad everyday sipper, a bit one dimensional is about my only critique. Very sweet on the nose and palate, with the sherry influence very clear, which for me isn't a bad thing. Fruits, caramel and some wood influence

Edit: Tasted again in the Flower of Hawaii in the Jet Pilot, but I was just as unconvinced by it as I was with cola, unfortunately. Well, to be honest, it wasn't really my favorite and will probably never be one of the BlackTot things. I think the finish is very present and ruins a lot here.

Kneipe The Rumah Rotterdam April 2026. Kann man mal machen diesen Rum, ist halt nix besonderes, aber preislich völlig übertrieben. Ist sehr fruchtig dieser Rum, etwas Holz und eine leichte Süße sind auch erkennbar.

Relatively sweet. Red wine/sherry notes clearly dominate.

#4876 Whisky Live in Paris 27.09.2024-30.09.2024. Another great event meeting a lot of RumX new and old friends. This year three weren't as many new releases as in 2023, but I still had a great time. Nose Round, light wood, fruity, light ester, banana, light caramel, faint coffee, faint smoke, light orange. Palate Balanced, light wood, faint roasted, round, clove, light licorice, faint leather, fruits, light orange, dried fruit, light ester. Finish Medium long, round, fresh, balanced, fruits, light wood, faint caramel, light coffee. This is solera done right in my mind. If you try it without knowing it's a solera you'd never guess that it is. I'd say it's between the standard version and the 50th Anniversary taste wise.

Verdict: I wouldn't say this is very balanced, but as an everyday sipper it's quite OK! It's quite sherry (or pajarette) driven, but smooth and velvety. 78 points Nose: interesting oxidised note after pouring. Sour grapes and even some meaty oxtail notes. It was almost as if pajarette was used. It settles quickly enough, for red fruit, dried fruit (prune), molasses, wood, and dark chocolate. It's rather like a sherried whisky. Palate: more of the sweet stuff: raisins, prune, leather, wood. Yet I do have the feeling that pajarette was used, also here. Does it matter? No, it tastes great! Dark chocolate, honey. Finish: moderate, a bit of fresh fruit here (orange), like in Pimm's cookies, raisin, prune, leather, honey and chocolate.

In der Nase schwer einzuordnen, eher nicht mein Fall. Am Gaumen typischer Black Tot, aber der PX-Sherry dominiert zu stark. Ich mag PX, doch hier kippt die Balance. Für den Preis okay, aber kein Muss!

Quite sweet, but that was to be expected. Can be drunk well, even if I smelled and tasted a little "New Year's Eve" - although bystanders didn't notice this, perhaps my nose was just a little too closed. Not overpowering and also quite common in sherry maturations, but certainly not everyone's cup of tea. Tasted at the Spirit in the Sky Festival in Brussels 11/2024

Expert review by The Fat Rum Pirate

There is maybe also a hint of darker fruits as well – Blackberries and some Plums. I would say overall this is a slightly sweeter and less challenging version of the Finest Caribbean. Lighter overall in profile and a little more approachable. I personally don’t enjoy it quite as much...
