Easy to sip neat at 52%, and a couple of members even park it over a big ice cube by the fire. It's a young Hampden dressed in oloroso: glue and ester up front, then pineapple, banana, red fruits and walnut, finishing dry and a touch tannic. The sherry runs loud on the nose but sits well-integrated on the palate. Not everyone loves the marriage, but most think it's the best Pagos yet.

So now I've tasted all three Velier Hampden Pagos from 2022, 2023 and 2024 in parallel. The differences are then rather negligible and for me the conclusion is that they are all very sherry-heavy, some more and some less. Basically solid, but also interchangeable.

Balanced yet powerful, the typical Hampden aromas are well combined with the influences of the sherry casks. The combination of fruity, earthy and umami notes makes it a good, complex rum, but without lasting enthusiasm.

Shery forward for sure, but pretty well integrated. I’m not always one to enjoy wine finished spirits and I like this a lot. The sherry on the nose and late on the finish is loud, but well integrated on the palate and on the tongue into the finish. A little water opens it up some. Sacrilegious as this sounds, I’d think that this would be delightful over a large block of ice in front of a fire on a cold evening. It sure has enough body to stand up to a cube.

#4878 Whisky Live in Paris 27.09.2024-30.09.2024. Another great event meeting a lot of RumX new and old friends. This year three weren't as many new releases as in 2023, but I still had a great time. Nose Light wood, faint smoke, light nutts, light herbal, light sherry, fruits, pineapple, light dried fruit. Palate Round, fresh, light wood, light sherry, fruits, light pineapple, faint salt, dried fruit, faint nutts, faint coffee. Finish Medium to long, fresh, light wood, faint roasted, fruits, light nutts, cinnamon, light prunes. This is a really nice release and I love that the Olorosso cask hasn't taken over the profile. Well balanced and great ABV integration.

On aeration, the wood is roasted with nuts, caramel, spicy with allspice, meaty, molasses is vegetal, briny, sulphurous notes join. 8,3:On the palate, the attack is medicinal with esters, rubber is burnt, fruits fermented tropical like banana and pineapple, citrus, plums, dairy tones, sherry gives dried fruits, leather, molasses is vegetal with briny olive, hay-ish, floral, sweet with honeycomb, as the wood is roasted with burnt sugar, caramel, nuts, spicy with allspice.Metallic patina arises, when the rum is well rested. 8,2:The finish is medium long, dry&tannic, sherry barrel impact is strong, with smoky, roasted wood notes, spicy, pairing various tropical and dried fruits, vegetal, briny molasses, hay-ish, dark with black tea, metallic patina, chemical touch with phenol. Wow, so the sherry is really very noticeable here. Otherwise, just a typical Hampden. We have lots of esters and tropical fruits like banana and pineapple. But it's easy to drink, like all Hampdens :-)

While the nose of batch 3 works well as the previous editions, the profile on the palate isn’t quite balanced in this one. The nose shows a nice combination of some esters from the Hampden and rich red fruits fruit the sherry casks. Good - in line with older editions. On the palate (at least from the freshly opened bottle), the Hampden notes seem to battle with the sherry rather than forming a balanced profile. It’s not terrible by any means, just a bit odd and less pleasant versus the two older editions. Edit: after 7 months in the open VSGB bottle, the picture is pretty much the same. I don’t taste a lot of change, so verdict remains unchanged.

As with its predecessors, you can smell and taste the classic Hampden aromas. As with the 2022, the influence of the Olorosso cask is very dominant, but the flavors are generally weaker. My personal favorite is 2022

Honestly, great Hampden. You really find the glue/ester side on the nose, with behind it a nice dose of very tasty tropical fruits. The sherry finish hits the mouth, it brings a lot of character. And the 52% is just right to have power without being tiring. Very good work, well mastered.

The Hampden Pagos sherry cask rum is a very interesting rum. On the nose, the esters are well present accompanied by fruity and woody notes. The palate is along the same lines with an additional warm and spicy touch. The finish, rather long, reflects the nose and palate.

Combines typical Hampden funk with a very distinct oloroso influence. Esters, solvents, and pineapple meet sherry, dried fruits, and nuts. Strong at 52%, but well integrated. Full of character and successful, although the sherry sometimes overpowers the Hampden funk.

The nose is so beautiful that you just can't stop smelling it. Lots of esters and tropical fruits. Phew, the taste will probably split opinions. For me, it tastes too fermented, without harmony. The sherry influence is very strong and partly overwhelming for me. Also partly an alcoholic sharpness. A shame, I hoped for more.

Third opus of the series, this Pagos fits perfectly into the romance between Velier and sherry. The nose bursts with sherry, esters and solvents before letting the fruits express themselves in all their forms: tropical (pineapple), red, dry (nuts) or citrus, there is something for all tastes. The cask gives roasted, sweet and very round nuances to the nose. The palate doesn't change the recipe much: sherry and esters upfront, pineapple, banana and dried fruits next, then warmer notes, notably on the alcohol, spices, roasted nuts and smoke. The profile is round, drinkable and very concentrated in aromas. The alcohol is well integrated in this Jamaican treat. The finish is of good quality, dry, roasted and esterified, scented with sherry and exotic fruits and seasoned with cinnamon and chili. A young and rather well-made Hampden, with quite a few nuances and roundness. This version does not change significantly compared to the initial batch, continuing the series.

Smell and taste of esters, nail polish, and tropical fruits like pineapple, banana, and mango. Dried fruits can also be found. The finish is medium length. Very good value for money in my opinion. I really like this bottling.

Whisky Live Paris 2024 (trade fair evaluation, only overall rating and personal recommendation to buy): From first impressions, I like it better than previous versions of the Pago. The sherry influence is clear on the nose but less intrusive on the palate. I would have to try it again in direct comparison, it was already late... I'm not sure yet whether I need a bottle.

The nose restrained roasted aromas slight nut influences. Slight spiciness on the palate. Well recognizable with sulphur and sherry. Strong finish. Lingers for a long time. A great rum that I will let compete against its two predecessors.

In the nose, a nice mix of tropical fruit, red fruit, and Jamaican esters. On the palate, the ex-sherry is quite noticeable but in the right proportion so it doesn't overpower the rum. Could have less tannins. As it is, it feels rougher and bitter.

Rate 7.7 I'm in the process of going through all the rum I have tasted. And try to give them a fair assessment from what I can remember from when I tasted them. Grade them as I would if I tried them today.

Hampden Pagos – 3rd batch – 52% A Hampden aged (duration unknown, but probably very young, around 18 months) in a blend of 16 ex-Oloroso casks, some of which held sherry for nearly 30 years. Mark HLCF (Hampden Light Continental Flavoured). Aromatic profile: ripe tropical fruits, black fruit jam, dark chocolate, dry wood. Verdict: a very young Hampden, but strongly marked by the influence of spiced sherry. This 3rd batch convinced me much more than the first tasted in September! Let's see how it compares to the 2nd batch...

Cherry and caramel on the nose, with a bit of ester. On the palate is sherry, cherry, loads of walnut and a bit of hampden funk, with banana and pineapple. The finish is long and buttery, with sherry and nuts. The alcohol is barely noticeable, well integrated. This is my favourite sipper so far.

The nose is fruity. There is some solvent, it is creamy and there is also something deep that I cannot completely describe but it comes close to barrel spice. The fruits are pineapple, citrus, red fruits, sour grape and dense guava. There is also minerality. The 2024 and 2023 are equally good on the nose. First thing on the taste is grapes. It is also a but hot but not like the 2023. Then there is something sour, almost bitter. And dry. All well within limits but not necessarily what I want from a Hampden. Luckily it becomes sweeter on the finish. This is the best Pagos so far, with a more creamy character, barrel influence and more complexity than the first editions.

Hampden Pagos - Jamaican rum aged in sherry casks. Intense, rich and complex - combining the typical ester explosion of Hampden with deep notes of dried fruit, spice and wood. The dry, bold and long finish makes Pagos an unforgettable rum for connoisseurs.

The typical overripe Jamaica funk banana is definitely there, but "quieter" than in a Smith & Cross, Wray and Nephew, or Rum Fire. On the other hand, much less funky, almost no gas station. Fruity, paired with some spice, most likely clove, dry. Unlike PX Cask, Brugal 1888,... I get little to no sherry. Certainly not bad, but I find it a bit expensive for what it offers, good that there are samples. Drinks: - Neat: 3.5/5 - Rum Punch: 3.5/5

It's a classic Hampden but I'd say with weaker ester notes typical for Jamaica in the aroma. On the tongue, I was a bit surprised by the slightly lighter body which hints at water towards the end and evaporates faster. Only the alcohol percentage maybe slightly saves it. Slightly woody and burnt in taste... maybe even a bit bitter.
