Flagon Royal Navy Rum 1964
Anyone chasing old navy-style rum and dark, aged Jamaican character will get a lot here. Expect leather, varnished wood, smoke and tar on the nose, then coffee, dark chocolate, licorice and dried prune on a thick, oily, slightly salty palate. Cask strength but soft, with a long bitter-tea finish. One taster called it a real "morceau d'histoire" — a piece of rum history.
- Deep dark complexity
- Oily soft texture
- Leather and coffee

An open flagon for my birthday. An antique nose of old varnished wood, old leather, black banana, ripe prickly pear, smokiness and a bitterness reminiscent of quinine. The palate is soft, then the aromas become more powerful. The same as on the nose, but not in the same order. You need to keep it in the mouth for a minute to really explore its potential. The finish is long, elegant and bitter. The empty glass is incredibly rich and deep, and surprisingly fruity. How do you judge a historic rum? With these flagons, you don't know what to expect. It's an excellent surprise here. It's comparable to Black Tot's Last Consigment, but more airy yet extremely solid. A real favorite! But am I being objective? Tasted again at the Spirits Museum tasting and still just as good.

Reminiscent of classic Navy Flagon with a noticeable Jamaica twist. Dark molasses, tar, leather, tobacco and dried plum on the nose, plus a hint of glue, banana and orange zest. Dense and slightly salty on the palate, brown sugar, licorice, black tea, cocoa and allspice, accompanied by a subtle trace of smoke. Oily texture, strong draw, very long finish with molasses, hardwood and dry tea bitterness.

A true piece of rum history that Philippe has unearthed for us. The nose is extremely fragrant and harmonious: fruit dominates in the form of eau de vie, prune, exotic fruit (banana) and red fruit (cherry). The slightly varnished woodiness is completely melted into the mass, with dark notes of tobacco, dark chocolate, mocha, leather and licorice. Spices, caramel, Demerara sugar, roasted and smoky notes are counterbalanced by a kind of freshness that lingers in the glass. A true olfactory orgasm. On the palate, the rum reveals its origins, its richness and its wisdom. A magnificent dark, roasted bouquet of dark chocolate, coffee, tobacco, licorice and winter spices. The varnished woodiness is very noble, happily accompanying plums, prunes, caramel and Demerara sugar for a little sensuality on the palate. The profile is bitter but absolutely delicious, complex and balanced. The alcohol is perfectly integrated. The finish may not be the longest and is rather timid, but it nevertheless retains all the elegance and accuracy of the profile, with its brown, fruity and dark, dry and sweet, savory and bitter character. A perfectly mastered and absolutely epic rum, which makes us understand why Tot was so highly prized by sailors - it's an experience in itself.

Communitytreffen RumX Acht Oktober 2025.

An absolutely incredible rum, bottled in Flagon in September 1964, and the quality is absolutely incredible. I've had the chance to taste it several times, and it's essential to keep this rum in your mouth as little as possible, as it will stick to your palate for a very long time! A pure marvel
