A.H. Riise Non Plus Ultra Very Rare Rum
Opinion on this one splits hard: newcomers and sweet-tooth drinkers call it a favorite, while seasoned tasters say it drinks more like a liqueur than a rum. Expect heavy caramel, vanilla and orange peel over a very sweet base, with a bit of oak and spice at the back. Several found the sweetness masks everything else, and a few flagged a solvent-like heat.

How does A.H. Riise Non Plus Ultra Very Rare Rum taste?
Aggregated from 285 community reviews.
Very sweet, liqueur-leaning orange-vanilla sipper Loved by beginners and sweet-rum fans, dismissed by many enthusiasts as too sweet and artificial. The pretty decanter gets more agreement than the liquid. One of the more rum-like Riise bottlings, but the sugar still dominates.

Sweet and fruity. The fruity notes on the nose are rather mild, but clearly in the foreground on the palate. The finish lingers long with a hint of wood at the end. Overall, a nice drop.

More multifaceted than many others from A.H. Riise. Apricot, caramel, orange and sherry are dominant on the palate. Somewhat sharp on the finish. Probably the A.H. Riise that can best be described as a rum. delicious but too expensive

too spicy & alcoholic and much too sweet, more like a liqueur than a rum. I don't know where this alcoholic spiciness comes from, but even if I like sweet rum, I don't want to drink something so fizzy, especially not for 80-90€...

17.12.2025 Day 17 of my Christmas Calendar, and yes another sweet rum 🙃 ----------- This rum has a clear hint of sherry and its a very sweet rum though better than most other Riise rums. Long sweet finish with fruit and caramel and smoke/tobacco. A bit too sweet for my taste.
Review by BTHHo 🥃
Flavors of caramel, cinnamon and orange, very sweet and a short finish.
Review by Honza
Recommend it for the end of the night / tasting. The dried apricots taste may feel overpowering. Fits my personal taste very well.

OBACHT: old edition mit mehr zucker ist gemeint new edition 2021 eine spur schärfer, 5-10 punkte weniger.

Just doesn't have much to do with rum Very sweet and not too complex. But nice and mild and balanced. Nice for all beginners and lovers of sweet rums. My wife likes it very much. Definitely too sweet for my taste now.

Review by LukaŽiga
8:The nose is highly perfumed: exotic pepper berries and ginger seeds. Cinnamon adds to this impression of sophisticated candy. It is also vegetal and even floral at times. Fruit is represented by a rather acidic red plum, balanced by a creamy side, the whole reminding us of a clafouti where a few cherries would also have fallen. Then comes something darker, more roasted.Aeration dissipates the burnt, roasted side, replacing it with a small solvent that recedes onto the cinnamon, which is present at every level. The orange peel nuances the candy idea we had at the outset. Even if it's still quite sweet, this expression seems to stand out from the rest of the range. The Christmas gingerbread aspect is still there, but brand afficionados can rest assured. 7,4:The attack on the palate is soft, with a winey, slightly rancio quality. The sensation is warm and oily, with aromas of chocolate, orange and vanilla. The woodiness is licorice-like, coated in molasses where rather rich, complex spices would be caught. 7,2:The finish is sweet, reminiscent of a liqueur or sweet wine...

Sehr gut. Fruchtig süß, Honig Vanille, sehr intensiv, langer leicht scharfer Abgang

Although I was already a little nauseous from the A.H. Riise spirits, I still tried the "Non Plus Ultra Vers Rare". This name sets off all the alarm bells :-D Here, too, the familiar palette of flavors, this time with a little more chocolate. Absolutely mediocre.

A gift from my colleagues... Overly sweet and slightly artificial in taste. Nevertheless, I understand why many people use it to enter the world of rum.

Sehr guter Crusta!!!

Also ziemlich krasse Süße.
Review by Al Bunda
Příjemná štiplavá a pikantní dochuť.

Gut gemachter Süßrum, mild, schöne Würze, nix zu meckern; dabei ne sehr schöne Flasche, was will man mehr.
Review by Martin Spooner

Best Rum I ever had, melts deliciously on the toung. But you have to prefer sweet though
Review by Nivius

The smell is more balanced than a lot of other rums from this range. The taste is full of that typical sweetness though.

Review by Roman Lelek
The color as usual yellow like old pee or honey, light brown tones. The nose sweet vanilla wood and spice, marmalade, punch etc The taste is very sweet, woody, some kind of artificial…quick short after taste… To be honest I don’t differentiate between all those a h rises rums, they all taste the same…all sweet one is more woody, other more fruity, full of sugar and nothing special here…lets open something better.
Review by Ondřej Koller
Good rum. Lot of sweet caramel and vanilla tones. Maybe some orange peel/ dried fruits (raisins). Alas a bit sweeter than I would appreciate. Medium length finish, quite round and smooth. Overall it is quite good but I prefer more dry rums…

Review by Mammutti
Thought something was wrong with the bottling. Liquid smellt of browned fat and salty waffles. Taste was the same. Mild peppery spice and orange peel, but the burned fat was too overpowering. Read that this one could be controversial. Bottle is the most beautiful, but the drink is undrinkable. Does not taste like rum. I feel scammed for spending 100e on this. I hope that some of my friends would enjoy it so it wouldn't go to waste. Couldn't finish my glass and its never happened before.

I tried to approach the stuff without prejudice. However, the added sweetness is so present and dominant on the palate that I consider this bottling absolutely unnecessary. It has nothing to do with rum. The price charged for it is an absolute impudence for the miserable quality in any case.
