Planteray Spain (PX Cask Finish) 2012

Sherry does most of the talking here: sweet dried fruit, vanilla and caramel with a nutty, butterscotch edge and a faintly smoky, dark-chocolate finish. Distilled in Spain in 2012 and finished in a PX cask, it splits the room — some find it pleasant enough, others call it thin and short on its own character, more sweet sherry than rum.

The smell doesn't impress too much. Some caramel, vanilla, cinnamon and dried fruit. In the taste I was probably most interested in a kind of whiskey in combination with the PX finish, which then carries over into the finish. A less sweet taste would have suited me better, but again, not a bad thing for me.

Rather a disappointing Planteray from Spain from the year 2012. Tastes very much like sherry and also recognizable in the nose. Therefore also a little sweet which doesn't suit my taste. Also a little woody on the palate

Sweet and lots of sherry, a little smoky and slightly earthy and reminiscent of cold coffee with cigarettes. I didn't have too high expectations of a rum from Spain and in a PX cask at that. Not bad but really nothing special either.

Woody, sweetish and fruity. Quite unspectacular

Planteray

Avg Rating 7.5/10 over 780 Rums

Planteray is the rum range Maison Ferrand renamed from Plantation in 2024. It is double-aged: distilled in the Caribbean, largely on Barbados at the historic West Indies Rum Distillery, then finished in France in ex-cognac casks, which gives the house style its rounded, polished character. Built by Alexandre Gabriel to make fine rum approachable, it runs from the flagship XO 20th Anniversary to a deep tail of high-ester and single-cask bottlings.
