The bourbon-cask side really shows here — several tasters catch a Kentucky/rye edge, even a "Bazooka bubble-gum" note, sitting on top of a fruity Long Pond core. Expect overripe pineapple, banana and mango with ester funk, then roasted, spicy wood on the finish. Dry rather than sweet. The one recurring gripe: the alcohol isn't always tucked in neatly.

Very light on the palate and beautifully fruity with burnt sugar and honey. "Larger" sips are much more fun here, but then you also run the risk of feeling the not ideally integrated alcohol sharply on the tongue. I'm somewhat ambivalent. A decent rum with lots of tropical fruit flavors. It lacks that certain something for me.

I already like this Planteray very much. Here we have a nice Jamaican with esters and tropical fruits such as pineapple and banana on the nose. Lots of esters on the palate too and this time mango for me. Thanks to Banana Joe for the sample.

The nose is great: ripe banana and pineapple, the cask supports the esters with smoky spicy warmth. On the palate, however, the cask bothers me, overpowering the esters especially in the finish. The alcohol is also too present.

Tried at Whisky & more 2026 in Hattingen Solid Jamaican with everything you'd expect. Esters and overripe fruits, the alcohol isn't perfectly integrated, but definitely a successful representative for getting into the fruity world of esters.

8,5:On the nose, the first impression is very pleasant and balanced with estery overripe tropical fruits like pineapple, banana and mango, some citrus.The molasses is vegetal with hay and olive. On aeration, the wood is a bit roasted, the new notes are a plum, lemon peel and flowery, as Kentucky finish brings malty feeling. 8:On the palate, the attack is spicy and fruity with overripe, for a moment even rotten, tropical fruits like mango, banana, pineapple, there are quickly some dried fruits like figs, apricots. The molasses is vegetal with the olive, hay, bitter with waxy, rubber notes, that makes the rum less round..The wood is spicy with pepper, clove, roasted with caramel, there is a pinch of a salt, malty taste from Kentucky barrel finish.After resting, an interesting Bazooka bubble-gum note arises. 7,8:The finish is long, dry, less pleasant, round with strong bitterness, tannins, some nuts, fruits balance our tasting, the rum becomes earthy. Jordan's sharing: Plantation Long Pond VRW 2017 (Kentucky Bourbon Cask Finish) – 51.9% From the mythical Long Pond Distillery, this Jamaican rum comes from a week-long molasses fermentation. Distilled in Pot Still, it first aged six months in bourbon barrels under Caribbean climate, before being transferred to France for nearly six years of refinement in Ferrand barrels. Its maturation ends with a last eight-month passage in Kentucky bourbon barrels, bringing deep notes of grains and vanilla. A dry rum, with perfectly integrated alcohol, offering a beautiful fruity ester.

Interesting fruity Jamaican [pineapple] with Kentucky/bourbon whiskey influence. Slim and quite dry but not too dry. Really reminds me a bit of bourbon/Kentucky rye. Honestly good but not extravagant. More interesting for fans of the Kentucky style.

#6892 07.06.2026 Time for a few samples to get back on track after yesterdays nice tasting arranged by Charles from Rum Depot in Berlin. A pretty good rum when looking at the price tag. Intense rum with nice esters, fruits, earthy, spice, light smoke and roasted wood.

Nose is full of tropical fruits and taste is funky with lots of esters. Bananas, red ripe apples, spices, nail polish. A little sharp, alcohol could have been better integrated.

Poured from a bottle that's been open for ~9 months, and is ~80% full. This mostly continental VRW does a lot of things right. Good mouthfeel, good nose and palate, and alright finish. It just lacks the exceptional character that many tropically aged VRW releases possess. Overall, a uncommon success from Ferrand.

Today we have a Planteray or two. First up is the Jamaica 2017 Bourbon Cask. The nose is very fruity with pineapple and bananas, but esters can also be detected. The taste is also fruity with mango. Very good

Nice and recognizable Jamaica. I'd almost say it has a peaty whisky finish, but the combination of esters and US whisky probably did it. Flavour-wise, it's say a combination of molasses and fruit. It just comes across as quite immature.it's strange, but it's like I can smell the HERR in it.

Very good nose with pleasant aromas of fruits and pastries. Pleasantly funky without being an exaggerated ester bomb. The taste is complex with fruits and pastries, banana and pineapple. Somewhere between taste and finish comes a toasted smoky note that initially bothered me but I now find pleasant. Price-performance at about 50-60 euros is great :) I think I have to order another bottle.
