Vagabond Spirits New Yarmouth Silva Collection 2005
Poured neat, this is New Yarmouth funk with the volume dialed back a touch. The lower ABV makes it creamy and easy, with overripe pineapple, esters, glue and a maple-cask sweetness folded in. Several tasters caught the salty-sweet play and toasted coconut. A few blind-tasted it and thought Hampden. One caveat: a couple found the maple pushed it "manchmal deutlich zu viel" on sweetness.

From community reviews · summarized with AI
Creamy, fruity New Yarmouth with maple sweetness People genuinely love this one — juicy tropical fruit, well-integrated alcohol, a "sehr süffig" NY. A few felt the maple finish or a late bitter edge tips it a bit far.

8,5:On the nose, the first impression we get are esters, overripe tropical fruits like pineapple, roasted, spicy wood with pastry, cookie dough, there is citrus, some solvents. A molasses is vegetal after airing the rum, as there are notes of vinegar and coconut. 8,7:On the palate, the attack is very tasty with very ripe, estery tropical fruits like pineapple, banana, kiwi, some citrus, later toasted coconut. We might think of tasting some marmelade, perhaps fruitcake. Some dried figs and prunes add to that feeling.Strong honey balances salty, spicy notes, as the wood is roasted with nuts, pastry. The molasses is floral with an elderflower and vegetal with an olive. 8,5:The finish is long, dry with notes from the palate lingering on, just a bit more vinegar tannic, imbalancing the impression in the end and earthy.

A typical New Yarmouth nose of fruit, esters and sweetness. In the mouth, it's intense and full-bodied. Unfortunately, from the finish to the long aftertaste, a harshness and bitterness clearly mark the palate. It's a shame. At this price, I'm disappointed.
Review by Tschusikowsky
Beautifully creamy and harmonious. Compared to the previous bottlings I have had from this vintage, it is less intense due to the reduced ABV. The citrus notes are much more subtle but delicious. The balance is wonderful. The bottling does nothing wrong, very tasty.

I have two exciting rums in my glass today: this one and, for comparison, RX8199, better known as Vidya the River Mumma. There is hardly any difference in color, the Vagabond is perhaps a touch darker. Nose: very similar to the River Mumma but more subtle and much less intense. Also more emphasis on fruit and less glue and nail polish. The dilution is noticeable in direct comparison and therefore the Vagabond is not as funky. Palate: fruit, esters, olives,... River Mumma with the handbrake on. This is not meant to be derogatory and mainly relates to the alcohol and funk. A bitter note and a dry/salty mouthfeel are noticeable. I also find the bitter/salty note in the River Mumma - but more intense. Finish: the bitter/dry note disappears and gives way to sweet, ripe tropical fruit, which lingers for a very long time. Excellent New Yarmouth, full broadside Jamaica, more accessible, more drinkable and less edgy than RX8199. The dilution is noticeable in direct comparison but the profile is very similar. I particularly like the fact that the fruit is more in the foreground. I rated the River Mumma 9.1, this one is no worse and no better, it just has a different effect because of the dilution, also 9.1

Very tasty 2005 New Yarmouth that is basically on par with its younger sister casks. A direct comparison is still pending. The few extra years in the barrel have added a bit more saltiness, but also a bit more acidity (lime). Slightly bitter like roasted walnuts used in Christmas cookies. The typical cookie dough aroma is there too, though not as dominant and a bit toastier than the younger predecessors. Really surprisingly good stuff!
Review by Thunderbird
This is a good solid New Yarmouth. The slight dilution suits it well. While the nose still has clear fruit aromas, they are only fleetingly perceptible on the palate. The sweetness with young wood and a little olive predominates. The alcohol is perfectly integrated. Beautiful sipper
Review by Serge
Delicious New Yarmouth ... very sweet on the nose and palate. There is a pleasant bitter note on the palate, as well as some saltiness and decadent cookies. A nice counter note to the sweetness. Alcohol is very well integrated.
Review by Mirco
A harmonious New Yarmouth with creamy texture and balanced aromatics. On the nose, subtle esters appear, accompanied by tropical fruits, citrus notes and a hint of honey. On the palate, nuances of dried fruits, spices and a slight saltiness unfold. Compared to other 2005 bottlings, less intense but more accessible and pleasant to drink.

German Rum Festival 2025, Berlin. An expressive, almost aggressive nose, with quite a bit of esters, overripe tropical fruits, solvents, glue and fermented vegetal. The palate is very Jamaican, rum raisins and the esters are less marked, the tropical fruits are a bit fresher. The wood is supportive. The finish is balanced, long, on tropical fruits. A nice barrel selection, I like the nose a bit less for its aggressive and (too) expressive side.

Here is a very nice discovery. It's the first time I taste a rum from this distillery and it really makes me want to know more. Overall very well balanced, its strengths are very ripe tropical fruits, a bit of brine, roasted coconut, very slight acidity. A nice complexity that's quite easy to drink.
Review by Skyfly
Exactly my thing, but that seems to be every 2005 NY. This one convinces with a certain creaminess. The dilution does not harm it at all. Only the finish is not as long as usual.
Review by Jakob
Excellent New Yarmouth. The Maple Cask Finish adds, as expected, heavy sweetness to the profile without overpowering it. The fruit esters continue to shape the picture and convince with expressive, fruity freshness that merges with the maple syrup in the finish. Great rum.
Review by SaibotZtar
Excellent New Yarmouth nose Ester , pastry, marzipan tropical fruits and some sea breeze .... Very harmonious and balanced in the mouth... Wonderfully fruity funky and always this touch of marzipan pastry and salt crust Very tasty

What a nose! I would have bet on a Hampden as the markers point to this distillery. It's superb. And it really makes you want to taste it. On the palate, it doesn't disappoint. The alcohol is superbly integrated. It's both smooth, elegant, powerful and classy. Complex, a salty touch, roundness, ripe fruits. Superb. Nice length. A superb rum. Magnificent. Edit: first impression totally confirmed. Superb selection.

#5618 31.08.2025 Tasting at the German Rum Fest 2025. Wow, this was another stunning rum at the Vagabond stand. Super fruity and well balanced ABV. Lots of overripe fruits with a little citrus and some esters. Balance ie really good and there is a nice natural sweetness to it. At the finish there is light nutts and some marzipan.
Review by Timo Groeger
Toller New Yarmouth, was soll man dazu schon zu sagen, sehr lecker jedenfalls. Könnte auch ein Hampden sein. Die tropischen Früchten Ananas und Banane gut erkennbar, neben den Estern und reichlich Klebstoff.
Review by Louis Zimmermann
A successful discovery for this New Yarmouth: a rum that seduces by its balance and indulgence. Not in the Jamaican excess, but in an elegant harmony between ripe tropical fruits, pastry, grilled coconut and fine touches of citrus. A refined tasting perfectly mastered by Vagabond Spirits.

Description from my blog: Nose: As soon as the sample is opened, the whole room changes smell. It's really crazy what they can do in Jamaica! I'm amazed every time, I hope this magic won't stop anytime soon. 700 gr/hlAA of esters that are noticeable, of course, but also some really rotten fruits, a mango compote, almost honeyed notes that make me think of propolis. Behind that, slight camphor notes, or maybe very ripe fruits. Expectations after such a nose are quite high, let's hope it continues! Palate: superb, full-bodied, warm. Papaya dominates, the esters blend a bit into the background... because a honey, caramel, peanut, maple syrup (probably the finish) fatty side brings a pastry-like aspect, taming them. Finish: almost infinite, everything is there for a great moment. The fruits, the sweet maple notes, maybe a bit of fresh nuts or almonds... 19 years of quiet aging that matured a very good juice, it was worth the wait!

I like it very much. Very harmonious. Nice interplay between salty and sweet. A bit like salted lemon cookies with tropical fruit topping. Alcohol very well integrated, you don’t notice the 56% at all. Now I’m wondering if I should get a bottle after all.

After having had the sample sitting around at home forever and procrastinating, I tried this at GRF out of curiosity and FOMO. Very good 2005 New Yarmouth, although I liked the CDI and the S.B.S better from memory.
Review by Master P
Compared to other NY very light, but Jamaica funk immediately flows from the glass. Esters, yellow fruits and a slight honey note. Taste is very mild and accessible. After a few seconds the pleasant sweetness returns. Finish is top, very drinkable. I'm surprised how good it tastes.
Review by Christian Rudt
Beautifully balanced aromas with baking spices, tropical fruits and a small load of esters. On the palate with plenty of wood from the long aging plus a great pineapple-coconut note. ABV well hit for me. Simply delicious 😋

Toller, reifer NY. 8,9

07-11-2024 - Rate 8.9 30-08-2025 - Rate 8.9 German Rum Festival 2025 3rd and last rum with Vagabond Spirits was their New Yarmouth. And I’m a sucker for New Yarmouth. This bottle is a great combination between the young CDI New Yarmouth’s and the old once from 1994. Although I still prefer the 1994’s Nose has clear ester notes followed by tropical fruits and nail polish. Palate is smooth and not too punchy by alcohol. Long finish dominated by ester and polish. 14-02-2026 - Rate 8.8
Review by Florent Apl
A very good Jamaican rum, not much wood as I would have expected. Everything else is as expected, very juicy and acidic. It's definitely enjoyable and is very well balanced, but if I had to be picky I'd say it lacks a little extra something to be truly amazing.
Review by Oliver
Quite a dry representative of the 2005 New Yarmouth.
Review by TheRhumhoe
A very nice selection from a bottler on the rise. The nose is broad, rich with ripe exotic fruits (pineapple, banana) and citrus, with a lovely pastry component that wraps around the nose with biscuit dough, vanilla, fruitcake, and viennoiseries. The esters are present with glue, solvents, and nail polish but don’t overwhelm the profile; they complement it very well. A beautiful aromatic alchemy. The attack on the palate is powerful, carried by a funky and tannic wave (esters, glue, nail polish). The fruits are very present, especially ripe pineapple and banana, coconut, and citrus that add body in the mouth. The soft honeyed notes and biscuit dough give a lot of smoothness and creaminess on the palate. It’s good, exuberant, but it lacks a little something to surpass the competition in this very competitive vintage. The alcohol is still very well integrated. The finish is long, carried by ripe tropical fruits, honeyed notes, and esters that leave their DNA in the mouth. However, some salty and woody notes appear to spice things up and enrich this somewhat linear profile. Vagabond Spirits offers, all in all, a very nice bottle, with character and elegance, and at a very respectable price.
Review by Djehey
Superb. What is remarkable is the lower alcohol degree compared to other Jamaican rums of this type. This gives a lighter side to the typical Jamaican ester aromas. As a result, it is very easy to drink. Moreover, the maple cask finish gives it a gourmet caramel coffee finale that completes a profile that would seem truncated without it. Must try again but it's a great success!

At the nose a nice estery pineapple. Very intense and pleasant smelling. On the palate great funk. Spicy creamy fruit bomb. Very tasty with a proper long finish. Really a nice drop. Delicious.
Review by DomM
Nice 05 bottling. ABV is at perfect drinking strength. Delivers all you can ask for in an NY.
Review by Mentalo
2005 New Yarmouth from Vagabond. This is already a good bottling and so far the smoothest NY I've had in the glass. The alcohol is perfectly integrated. Wonderful mouthfeel. Plus lots of cookie dough, tropical fruits, a bit of wood. It's really fun in the glass, even though there are more complex bottlings from that vintage. But the biggest problem is the sweetness. I think the Maple Cask contributed a lot to everything. But even though I enjoyed the bottling in the glass, sometimes it was clearly too much for me.
Review by Alexander Rasch
A consistently tasty rum that shows a great mix of fruit and wood. It's creamy and almost easy-drinking. Nice honey notes and pastry. It all fits very well together. Maybe it lacks a bit of power and warmth. I don't want to call it an easy sipper yet, but it's heading that way without lacking complexity. I like it a lot. Delicious.

08/03/2026: Brussels Rhum Festival @ Tour & Taxis. A nice, tasty and estery New Yarmouth. If I would taste this blind, I might mistake it for something from Hampden. For me, it reminded me of similar overripe fruit and ester notes. Alcohol is integrated well.
Review by GuybrushThreepwood
I met the bottler at Pueblo del Ron. Overall many very nice releases. This one does nothing wrong for me but is not spectacular either. Other Vagabond releases have impressed me more and also with a better price/enjoyment ratio.
Review by Martin Švojgr
Don't expect as full-bodied a flavour as the 1994s, I'd liken it more to a Hampden, but the esters and coconut are there. I'm satisfied
Review by Buddudharma
Schöner NY mit toller Alkoholintegration. Das Finish ergänzt den Rum gut, hier gibt es nichts zu meckern.
Review by Tomáš Jankovský
Ve vůni cítím pryskyřice a dřevité tony. Není moc esterová. Jsou tam lehké náznaky citrusů a ananasu. Na chuti hodně sladké, intenzivní marmeláda. Dále tropické ovoce, ananas a citrusy. Taky trochu kokosu. Hodně se tím prolínají medové tony.
Review by Vidaa Wz
Very nice texture in the mouth, it's thick even creamy, the pastry hazelnut side makes its own appearance typical of the New Yarmouth 2005, although you find some citrus notes at times, it's very well done.
Review by tolf
Completely different from the 2009 (Reference CDI: RX13284). Less biscuit, more esters, fruity, sweet and slightly salty. Round, creamy, "thick." I like the 2009 a bit better, but the sample was so good that I got a 2005 bottle - even if it's from TBS, which is also partly stored tropically.

Fantastic high ester rum!
Review by Michal Jurka
Vagabond is a French brand dedicated not only to rum. Among their rums are mostly blends, but they feature quite unusual to controversial approaches – they blend rum with other types of alcohol, age it three times, experiment with aging at sea, under the sea, in caves, aging in unusual barrels (beer, white Jurancon wine, acacia, cherry, maple wood, etc.). They have very nice bottle graphics. I was especially looking forward to the New Yarmouth, as I don't often get rums from this distillery. It's a 19-year-old, continentally aged rum, finished for 4 months in new maple barrels. A pleasant 55%, typical Jamaican traits (esters, chemicals, overripe tropical fruit) and typical NY traits (sweetness, creaminess, sweet pastry, coconut).
