One taster sums it up plainly: at nearly 70% this reads "more Scotch than rum." Give it a long rest in the glass and the alcohol settles into brine, olive and lemon peel, with a little candied-fruit sweetness and young, earthy wood on a dry finish. Even then it stays sharp-edged and salty. A polarizing pot-still Demerara that some find musty and characterful, others just find hot.

So I have to say, I don't find it that bad. It actually leans towards Uitvlugt, definitely very musty on the palate, you can taste brine, also quite bold and generally pretty earthy :)

7,7:On the nose, whisky notes, smoky, briny, slightly alcoholic, roasted wood notes like caramel, chocolate, spicy, fruits like citrus, candied, floral, earthy molasses, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, molasses is herbaceous, vegetal, cherry hints and dried fruits arise, roasted nuts, cocoa, leather, malty and meaty touch, some anise, metallic patina. 8,1:On the palate, the attack is strong, slightly alcoholic, medicinal with whisky barrel impact, molasses is earthy, musty, peated, briny, herbaceous, floral, vegetal, a bit bitter, sweet with honey, fruity with citrus, green fruits, sour, later tropical fruits, dried apricots and raisins, as the wood is roasted with caramel, spicy with anise, hot. 7,8:The finish is medium long, dry, hot, whisky barrel impact is obvious, still strong, medicinal, metallic touch is present, fruits like dried apricots, raisins, citrus, toasted oak notes with caramel, vanilla, leather, molasses is earthy, slightly grassy.

Smoky, alcohol not well integrated. Leafy green and old sweets. Bitter, furry. A completely different number than the TWCC. That one was super versatile. This one is just alcohol with some flavor. The sweetness may soften the rather bad taste a bit. No way, absolutely not my thing.

I let it rest in the glass at 45% because of other reviews, which made it less sharp/alcoholic. Brine and olive dominate on the palate, the slight sweetness reminds of candied fruits. On the palate and finish still sharp-edged, some whisky barrel and a hint of honey. The olive is still present.

Needs some time on the nose until the high ABV settles, then candied (yellow) fruits and brine/olive come through (like I often have with continental PMs). On the palate, quite sharp-edged, salty finish. Overall, my impression solidifies that the 2004 Diamond VSG / SXG don't quite play at the top level...

Wow, what a permission. On one hand, the alcohol hits hard, both on the nose and palate. On the other hand, with each sip I convinced myself that it smells and tastes much more like Scotch than rum.

I did let this rum sit in the glass before tasting On the nose: Citrus notes, lemon peel. Olive and brine notes. Hints of grass. Alcoholic. Taste: Quite hot and alcoholic upfront, Scottish whisky mouthfeel. Then you get brine, sour citrus. Honey notes. Medicinal notes here and there. Finish: Young wood, earthy, herbal mouthfeel. Dry. Olive brine notes. I would say medium finish. Maybe i return to this in the future, but this doesnt work for my palate right now

Actually, due to the high alcohol content, I can't really detect many nuances in this rum. Some fruit and sweetness, some wood and dark notes in the finish. Long aging doesn't help much here, the alcohol content is just too high. Maybe dilution helps?
