Collectors chasing very old Cuban rum are the real audience here — a 45-year-old 1978 at 50.5% from Sansibar. Expect milk chocolate, walnut, caramel and toffee with light spice and a touch of lemon peel. Several tasters found it round and easy-drinking but "hell" and thinner than the age suggests, with a note of dilution. Lovely, not mind-blowing.

Quite restrained on the nose, aromatically defensive, although the typical markers of the old Cuban profile are recognizable with woody notes, heavy sweet notes of caramel, vanilla sugar and molasses. Also woody notes, light spices, dried fruit. Very good, palatable, almost without rough edges - a tasty release, but for me, due to the rather straightforward sweetness, it is more likely to be located in the midfield of more recent Cuban releases in direct comparison.

So, the second Cuban this evening and unfortunately, like the first, not much richer, although it is considerably older. A little more chocolate and a little darker. That's it.... the sweetness is almost identical... too bad

A brief Cuban afternoon in the last rays of sunshine. The RX22145 and the RX22444 were tasted in parallel with a good cigar. For me personally, there really wasn't much difference in age to be tasted. Both solid Cubans that go very well with a cigar, but unfortunately don't end up in the group of top rums. But they are still solid bottlings that are on a par.

Yeah, I can't really write much here. It's insanely roasted, lots of coffee but also cocoa, but also offers a lot of caramel uh and also chocolate on the palate. Thanks for the kind attention ;)

8,5:On the nose, the first impression we get is fruity with lemon peel and banana, as the wood is roasted with caramel, white chocolate, walnut and spice. The molasses is dark, vegetal with black tea. On aeration, yellow fruits arise, dried fruits like apricot, raisin, the molasses is floral and minty, after resting, orange peel rounds the notes nicely. 8,6:On the palate, the attack is juicy with all kinds of delicious fruits like yellow, tropical, red and dried with, you name it, notes like banana, pineapple, mango, papaya, dried apricots, raisins.The wood is roasted and spicy with nuts like almond, caramel, vanilla, later cinnamon, chocolate, joined with honey and toffee.The molasses is a bit vegetal, minty, becomes darker with licorice.Our tasting buds are enjoying this tasty, complex and round rum.Citrus like lemon peel arises after nice rest. 8,3:The finish is long, dry, but less juicy, balanced, the notes from palate linger on, just the molasses is more waxy, bitter with a bit resinous wood.

Tasted in parallel with RX22444 and RX18823. Well, not the big hit. Unfortunately, you can't really tell that the rum is supposed to be 45 years old. It tastes palatable, but somehow unexpectedly "light" for such an old rum, especially one from Cuba. As with the RX22444 tasted at the same time, I would hardly have blindly guessed that this was a Cuban rum, and if so, then a sweetened one. Conclusion: In terms of taste, this rum is closer to the RX22444, which failed for me, than to the excellent RX18823, which is 14 years younger, despite being 45 years old. My impression: Old rum from Cuba is simply not a safe bet these days, the quality is very mixed, you should always reach for a sample first rather than a whole (usually expensive) bottle. Let's see what comes next, it remains exciting with the black box Cuba.

Probably the oldest rum I've ever drunk at 45 years. On the nose already a lot of chocolate and also whisky. On the palate comes a note of caramel and toffee. Generally quite good.

On the nose toffee and caramel with nuts. On the palate nicely caramel-nutty-raisiny. The walnut-raisin note lingers for a while in the finish. Very round and very tasty! I find this rum quite underrated here.

Nose: caramel, wood, vanilla, cinnamon, sweetness. Palate: alcoholic, light yellow fruits, vanilla, cardamom, cinnamon, raisins. Artificially sweet. Finish rather short. Overall, I expected more, a bit little flavor, too alcoholic, little complexity. Somehow I don't really get along with the Cubans. Maybe not quite my preferred flavor profile.

I've never had a rum this old before and I'm curious to see if I can appreciate the drop appropriately and fairly. Very full-bodied and round, without peaks. The alcohol strength is pleasant. Somehow a raspberry passes the tongue from time to time. I don't have any other associations with the first dram yet. I'm curious to see what develops with time and oxygen. Only in the finish is there a little malty sweetness, a hint of bitter almond and brown sugar sweetness, just a little. There is no ester but lots of pleasant spices. It needs time, which it gets.

#6780 12.05.2026 Relaxing with some samples after my bike training. Listening to some nice Trance Tracks on Spotify. A pretty decent bottling but with a high price tag. A fruity rum with nice earthy and chocolate notes as well as some nice spices, light mint and herbs.

A very sweet piece, where the nose is very interesting, combining wood, smoke, fruit, and caramel sweets. On the palate, there is a lot of sweetness at first glance, but gradually more interesting tones of wood and raisins appear.

Another Cuban with amazing key data. Again, the price is naturally very high. Again, I have high hopes for the rum. Again, the rum doesn't give much away. Milk chocolate and shallow roasted aromas. It seems diluted and a little sugary. All in all, the relatively young Cubans at cask strength are better than the old ones, with the possible exception of the TWJ 1978.

Quite reserved on the nose, aromatically defensive, somehow it smells smoky, recognizable are wood notes, heavy sweetness of caramel, vanilla sugar and molasses. Plus wood notes, light spices, dried fruits. Very good, easy to drink, almost without edges and corners. For the price and 45 years, however, you expect more.
