The Whisky Jury The Ester Hunter (catch 2) 2024
Sipped neat, this is a wild ride: overripe pineapple, strawberry and glue up front, then a smoky, almost bacon-and-peat streak from the Savanna half of the blend. Big esters, dry finish, often a metallic or bitter twist that trips it up. A Hampden-Savanna experiment that divides people hard — some find it fascinating, others just unbalanced.
The community says- Huge ester punch
- Overripe tropical fruit
- But: Disjointed blend

Smoky high-ester blend, thrilling but unbalanced Genuinely divisive. Fans love the mad ester-and-smoke combo; plenty of tasters find the blend disjointed with an off, metallic finish. One member summed it up: "Interesting experiment, however not for my taste."

This bottling confuses me. When I sampled it, I found it very inharmonious on the nose and I feared the worst. Then I forgot all about my sample and rediscovered it in the evening. The inharmoniousness was gone and I have esters and a very pleasant, slightly sour strawberry aroma on the nose. On the palate, it comes across as very floral and herbal, but without losing the strawberry aroma. I honestly like it very much up to this point, but then comes the finish. There's something metallic about it, which really bothers me. The finish is also very short. The alcohol is very nicely integrated. Without the finish, I would have given it a medium-high 80 rating, but unfortunately "only" an 80. In my opinion, it definitely needs time to breathe, I don't know if it really needs that long, but it does need its time.

With all due respect, something has gone wrong. The whole thing reminds me slightly of something smoky and whisky-like. Of course there's a bit of Jamaica in there, but it's pushed into the background by a lack of tone. Unfortunately, it's not my cup of tea. The aftertaste is quite unpleasant.

The merger of Hampden and Reunion was not a perfect economic fit here. It is very unbalanced and clearly lacking in quality. Of course you can taste Hampden with fruitiness and esters and also the GA somehow, but somehow it doesn't really fit, maybe the finish gives the blend the rest. Quite passable as a mixer 😁

#5660 11.09.2025 At home with an upset stomach and headache, so why not try to fix the stomach with a few rums. Nose Medium intense, fresh, light wood, faint smoke, ester, fruity, citrus, light glue, banana. Palate light oily, medium intense, ester, light wood, fruity, light glue, pineapple, banana. Finish Long and warm, light wood, light roasted, fruits, spice, light floral. Empty glass Light floral, citrus, spice, faint chocolate, light mint.

8,3:On the nose, a combination of Hampden and Savanna bumps into our nosetrils with overripe, almost rotten, pungent tropical fruits like pineapple, red strawberries and citrus fruits, tons of esters, smoky and spicy wood, vegetal molasses. On aeration, smoky whisky notes are stronger with peat, salt, bacon, some confectionery and medicinal notes, the banana is overripe, as eucalyptus finds way out. 8,1:On the palate, the attack is pungent with overripe, rotten notes of tropical fruits like pineapple, then strawberries, citrus fruits and vegetal molasses, esters, the wood is smoky, spicy, salty, after resting a bit, whisky notes are present with peat, bacon and salt, not overpowering, then yellow fruits and banana, bitter orange, the molasses is slightly flowery, as the wood slightly roasted with faint caramel, nuts and confectionery. The tasting buds are hyperstimulated with bitter and astringent notes like yoghurt. 8:The finish is medium long, more monotonuos as the palate, dry, slightly metallic and mineral, with a lot of esters, whisky notes and various overripe fruits. I don't understand bad reviews, as smoky whisky notes are nicely interwoven with Hampden and Savanna combination...

The nose is still quite appealing, even if it takes some getting used to. Unfortunately, the palate is a total letdown for me. Doesn't seem harmonious, as if the components shouldn't have been blended. Slightly musty. Not a fan of this bottling.
Review by Julien Ries
This edition's nose greets us with fairly heavy esters and candied lemon. There's also roasted pineapple. The second nose sends out more medicinal accents, clove, camphor, eucalyptus. The kind of stuff you breathe in to clear your nose. If you look hard enough, you'll also find baked apples. In conclusion, I'll come back to the overall sensation of this nose, which follows that of the mouth. The latter is a slap in the face, with totally new tastes. The palate is oily and greasy. I ate a poulet boucané in Martinique and it tasted exactly like this. Yes, it was. There's a strong hint of smoked meat, but it's sugarcane smoke. There's a hint of fruitiness, of vegetal, but it's very discreet. Both on the nose and on the palate, this rum is very poorly balanced. The marriage between the two terroirs is a mess. Each rum would undoubtedly be very good separately, but the alliance just doesn't happen. The finish is harsh, interminable and sticky. Disappointing from this bottler.

Interesting experiment, however not for my taste

Wow, :) also das war erwartbar. Toller Hampden, tropische Früchte, vor allem Ananas und Banane haben wir hier. War ja nicht zu erwarten :-). Ansonsten noch leicht schmierig / schmutzig aber auch leicht holzig.

Release 2 of the Ester Hunter series from The Whisky Jury. This time a blend of relatively young Hampden and Savanna bottlings. Both come through well, although the Hampden already has the upper hand. Difficult to rate in the end. I like both styles, but together as a blend it doesn't really want to work. Even if it's not a bad blend in terms of quality.
Review by alex
I'm not really convinced by this blend of 2 rums that I usually like, a Hampden that's too light, and a Savana that's barely perceptible apart from the strawberry and vegetal notes. The alcohol is well integrated, and there's little or no length. Disappointing juice 😕
Review by Skyfly
As the name suggests, the esters are in the foreground here. On the nose in particular, you get a crazy composition of esters and tropical fruits on the one hand and eucalyptus and peat on the other. On the palate, peat and floral notes alongside esters and tropical fruits. A little bitterness and something metallic on the finish. Personally, I can't agree with the "bad" ratings of the others - I like the blend better than many others, even if the finish is a little strange. But it's definitely worth a sample
Review by Johnny Rumcask
For me, a blend is good if it is better than its individual components. This is not the case here. In the nose and mouth, the Savanna clearly dominates at first. The Hampden is in the background. The Hampden then comes out more strongly with longer standing time. For me, however, the whole thing never comes together to form a harmonious whole. The individual components are good, but the blend is no better.

Am der Nase ein ordentlicher Ester Punch. Allerdings auch kt einer gewissen süße. Vielleicht wirklich Erdbeere. Am Gaumen dann wird der ester unterstrichen. Hat allerdings auch etwas metallisches.
Review by Schnubbii
Fruity on the nose, then rubber tires on the palate, which dissolve into a low-ester Hampden and a fairly young, probably Virgin Oak matured Savanna. Not necessarily bad, but not particularly impressive as an experiment.
Review by Jakob
Spannender Blend, der beiden Bestandteilen ausreichend Raum zur Entfaltung lässt - und diese Melange funktioniert. Stimmig und trotz des jungen Alters ein rundes Geschmacksbild.
Review by Johannes
Spannender Mix, aber leider nicht ganz harmonisch. Ich habe im Abgang fast leicht rauchig/fleischige Noten, als ob ein Whisky Fass im Spiel gewesen wäre. Wahrscheinlich kommt das aber vom GA.
Review by Chrischi78
Fresh estery notes on the nose, fruity too, but also quite peaty, resulting in unpleasant off-notes in the combination. The bumpy game is repeated on the tongue, but it never really rounds out. A slight sharpness and bitterness on the finish. Since 6 points means "pleasant", I'll stay below that, because it really isn't.
